Go on then, Salvage Squad last night. - Flat in Fifth
Seeing as no one else can pluck up the courage to post on this I'll stick my oar in and get steam up. (well it was about a steam launch!)

I was just getting up pressure about the testing of the boiler, well I suppose they *did* test it in a way. And I was tut-tutting about the crappy caulking, and had actually calmed down over the concept of someone who wanted a *perfect* restoration allowing that absolutely b*ggered prop to be installed when junior SWMBO piped up with.

" when I grow up I want to be a continuity girl on the TV"

Both SWMBO Snr and myself stared, simultaneously asking "why"

The answer was "Well watching this rubbish they obviously don't do much"

Out of the mouths of babes and............

The fuss they made over making the tapered sleeve was ridiculous!, the caulking was done in a few seconds and the inside of the boat was varnished without us seeing!

Plus the boat was painted, then strapped to a trailer within 6 hours - surely it would have wrecked the paint - or maybe it took a little longer than a week ;)

I look forward with interest to the rebuild of the Tiger moth - I suspect that the finished article will be checked rather more carefully than the preceding projects, as the C of A inspectors take no prisoners..
Hope it all ends happily, as any project which returns a 'Tiggie' to its natural element is to be encouraged.
(I earned my PPL in Tiger Moth G-APBI in '59, happy days!)

i wonder how long the tiger moth will take, probably be a complete rebuild, paint, making and putting on two wings, all in a week??

Did you spot the deliberate error last night .The owner referred, at one stage, to the team having done "weeks" of work.Really, I would never have guessed.

Re: Go on then, Salvage Squad last night. - alvin booth
Having worked with steam I was very suspicious of their attempts and knowledge. No boiler Inspector, Testing to twice working pressure (normally one and a half) and just how did they raise it to twice. Normally by screwing down both! safety valves.
Many many other make believe statements they came out with I don't think apart from gerry they have any no-how. And his acting needs a bit of a brushing up too.
Still....it gives us somethiing to talk about.

Re: Go on then, Salvage Squad last night. - Flat in Fifth
Yes Alvin,

I was a bit suspicious about the lack of boiler inspector, it is a pressure vessel after all.

Not had time today to look up the code to check if that qualified as a boiler which had to be inspected. Some or maybe all codes have a lower limit in terms of size and pressure below which it is not classed as a boiler.

Lets face it when was the last time you had Lloyds Register round to check your Mamod traction engine?

Another thing, I thought that the prop was supposed to be Woodruff keyed onto the shaft, but I didn't see any of that in the machining performance, or maybe I was distracted by the womenfolk.

And by the way have it on good authority that a certain person missed it. This is just not good enough, I rely on the expert eye to see where the traction engine scuttle plate turns up. Had they turned into that kettle?

FIF,

If they'd had four spare scuttle plates from the batch a small amount of work could have made it a hydrofoil.

I'll try and monitor next weeks offering.

David
Re: Go on then, Salvage Squad last night. - Flat in Fifth
David,

Hmm interesting thought, hydrofoil.

But then they would have had to rev the propellor too fast. Therefore due to the prop being severely out of balance due to rock chewing damage the resulting vibration would have knocked Dibnah's cap off on BBC2.

Fred wi'out 'is cap? nah steady on lad.

cheers,
Stuart

Yeah no sign of machining for the woodruff key. Must find out where they get that quick drying primer/undercoat and gloss - bloody good stuff!!!!

Andrew.
Wonder paint. - David W
Andrew,

You mean like the new house site painters trick. Mix undercoat and gloss 50/50 for a one-coat quick job.

Re: Wonder paint. - Brill
Any thoughts on the owner's attitude during and after?

I'd have thrown him into the water.
Re: Wonder paint. - Flat in Fifth
Yes Stuart,

the missus called him an obnoxious git or something similar, like Elvis on the Bristol episode he was worse with the coloured guy.
