Tutting to myself, I followed an HGV tractor unit (no trailer attached) along lane 3 of the M56 for a couple of miles one day last week. Speed 70mph.
It now seems that if it’s under 7.5 tonnes then it’s allowed in the outside lane and has no need of a speed limiter.
Can anyone offer the definitive position on this? Read more

If the lanes of a 3-lane motorway are marked to divide traffic flows - for example if the inside lane peels off at the next junction, then lane 3 is really 'lane 2' of the continuing main motorway and thus HGVs are presumably allowed to use it.

A solo artic tractor unit is a goods vehicle as its main purpose is to pull a semi-trailer. The '5th wheel' coupling on the tractor unit carries a considerable portion of the weight of the trailer and its load....

A few years ago my Outlander was in for service and the screen cracked on the test drive. The dealer surprisingly didn't suggest I claim on my insurance, they got their regular, trusted local firm to do it. I was very pleased with the result. I've had a couple of poor jobs from the big Nationals.

Yesterday the car was in for an MoT. The tester commented that I must have had a news screen, and it wasn't a genuine Mitsubishi one. I asked how he knew - the chassis number couldn't be seen through the viewing window at the bottom of the screen.

Any advice would be appreciated. Asking on behalf of son. He's come home from Nightshift this morning and gear box has gone. He said went from 1st gear into 2nd crunched and now won't go back into first. He's adamant he's just going to buy a second hand gearbox but I think he should get it reconditioned or at very least get a quote for a recon.

I just think at least having it reconditioned he'll get a little guarantee but with a second hand gearbox there's nothing to say same won't happen. ... Read more

Over from General Discussion. Had to buy this van in adverse conditions, could not test drive, only able to start, listen, move back and forth a few feet, make sure went into each gear.

Well, I called the branch this morning, and a very helpful chap said he'd got a similar kit on the shelf (same bearing) for my vehicle (IRO £20 ISTR but my receipt is still in the van and I am tired and cream crackered and going to bed happier than I have been for a week or so), so I went and got it (and a screw type ball joint separator). With a few odds and ends extra, the job's done. If anyone wants "blow by blow" I can post the procedure.

Hey just looking for some advice if possible. I was involved in a car accident on Wednesday. A car hit a stationery van, spun out into my lane (right hand lane of dual carriage) where I then collided with the car. I have dash cam footage showing the car spinning across into my lane. I was travelling at around 65mph at the time so not speeding and the road was wet so stopping distance was greater than average. Driver of the car who hit the van has admitted liability for that accident but not mine. Does anyone know what happens next? No witnesses at the scene, no cctv and the police are not able to apportion blame though they collected statements at the scene. Thank you in advance. Read more

Just to let everyone know the other driver admitted fault. Thanks for the replies! Will head over for advice on which car to go for next.

Hi

I tried to put my drivers window down when it was frosty. The window was stuck and as a result I broke the Window Regulator Plastic Bolts that connect the window to the mechanism for putting the window up and down.... Read more

I assume this is the same V5 issue that has now been explained in a new thread

Yes, apologies, I forgot to say (the new thread being "general" and not specifically for this vehicle).

At the age of 70 you must renew your licence every 3 years but you are able to carry on driving while your licence is being renewed as long as:

  • Your doctor agrees that you can continue driving
  • You drive under the conditions of the previous licence
  • You are not disqualified
  • Your last licence wasn’t revoked or refused for medical reasons
  • Your application is less than a year old
  • You had a valid licence
  • You weren’t disqualified as a high-risk offender on or after 1 June 2013

Be aware that some applications take longer than 12 months for DVLA to come to a decision - so a re-application is necessary after 11.5 months to permit continuing to drive while the application is being processed....

Yeh, that guy (Mexican American, IIRC) is quite good, though I can't remember the channel title. Has "wrenching" in it, I think.

Seems a bit of a waste, since not obviously broken, though suffering from complexity, the inherent direct injection problem, and those nasty plastic timing chain guides that helped me kill my Sierra DOHC 2L....
