Have searched the forums for any other similar issues and couldn't see anything so thought I'd post and see if anyone can offer any advice:

  • Car: 2010 MK6 1.6 TDi Bluemotion
  • Mileage: 200,000
  • Last service: 10,000 miles ago (due fresh oil and filter)
  • Last coolant flush: July 21' - G12 used, no additives ever added
  • Coolant level: holding
  • Engine oil level: holding
  • Heaters: Working OK
  • Daily commute: 50 miles each way - motorway

Apologies for the delay responding.

So the problem was down to the heater matrix. Despite a number of garages questioning this I found a post elsewhere online of someone having a similar issue, replacing the heater matrix solving their problem. The same happened for me. Replaced the matrix and the gauge hasn't moved off 90. Engine oil temperature however does continue to run hot. I actually changed the thermostat as well, this made absolutely zero difference.

Can anyone recommend the best battery for a late X250 2015 XF 3.0S and the best way to fit it without encountering any problems? I keep reading about owners who have had nightmares with the central locking on facelift XFs after changing the battery. I understand the logic in keeping the power supply going whilst changing the battery with a OBDll battery saver but this type of work is not exactly my forte so would I be better taking the car to a Jaguar specialist? I'd greatly appreciate any advice from someone who has successfully changed the battery on their facelift X250 XF.

The car still has it's original JLR 7 year old battery. I charged it up with a CTEK charger and it was fully charged up to number 7 on Monday. However today, when I started the car it was extremely cold and the low battery warning came on and when I put the CTEK charger on it stayed on light number 1 on the charger for hours so it seems as though the battery needs replacing.

Many thanks in advance. Read more

There are battery jump start points under the bonnet. I would strongly advise not to keep power on while doing a battery swap . The main battery leads in the boot will still be alive. If the main battery positive lead touches earth, you could end up with a whole lot of trouble. The obd socket is behind the lower part of the dash panel , just by your legs . Do not use a battery saver device in this either.

I'm looking to buy a new used car approx 3 years old. Am currently looking at a Skoda Karoq, BMW 2 Active Tourer, Audi A3 and Toyota C-HR. Does anyone have any opinions on any of these please? Things that are important to me are safety and reliability. Heated seats and windscreen and reversing cameras are nice to have and preferably an automatic. I'm not looking at a hybrid. Budget of no more than £19,000. Thank you. Read more

Things that are important to me are safety and reliability.

If these top your priority list I am surprised you don't mention Volvo and Mercedes - makers which I always thought pioneered and prioritised these criteria. ...

Hello all
Long time since I last posted, so please be gentle!
I am looking for some advice as to whether I should stick with my current car or buy something else. As background, I have had my Infiniti for the last 4 years. It is very rare, being a 2.0t petrol (I believe this is a Mercedes engine). I really like the car, it has a fantastic interior, and it has been completely reliable (famous last words!) during my ownership. It is a 65 plate, but with only 42,000 miles on the clock. It is also the top spec car, so potentially a lot of electronics which could go wrong!
While I would like to keep the car, I do have the following concerns:
a) I am stuck with only one 'official' Nissan garage nearby to service the car - which is expensive. They are quoting £500 for my next service.
b) I am worried about supply of parts. I haven't needed any so far, so am not sure how easy it is to get parts now and in the future
So I guess my questions are:
a) can anyone recommend a garage reasonably local to me (I live in Wokingham) who could service my car; and
b) should I be worried about the parts supply issue? I think that, when I raised this with Infiniti before they left, they said that parts would be available through Nissan for 10 years - which would take me through to 2030 - but I'm not sure if this is true.
I should be grateful for any views on the above.
Thanks Read more

Unless they get wet or chewed by wildlife, electronics on top spec cars are usually pretty reliable. Everything on my Audi A8, twice as old as your Nissan and considerably more miles, still works....

Evening guys. As headline says, can't turn them off using stalk. Normal & fast wiper work, intermittent does not. The only way they go off is when ignition key is removed (takes about 10 secs to stop) Any ideas? Read more

I have a ford puma that is out of warranty in January, atm, it’s at the dealers for a strange noise which was initially diagnosed as a faulty drive pulley, and the crankshaft pulley was identified and replaced, this , however didn’t cure it, it was then thought to be solenoids that control the rockers ect, but the dealer rang to say that these parts that are needed are pretty much unobtainable for the foreseeable future so ford have decided to fit a brand new engine, not a short or part engine, or a rebuilt one but a brand new, factory fresh one, I’ve had several issues with it and was thinking of changing it next year, but should I now keep it, it’s a high spec model and, with a new engine I’m sort of starting from zero ( engine wise ) car has 22k on the clock, should I stick or twist..? To be clear, the engine hasn’t failed as such, just had an annoying noise that was only audible when the engine was warm and on idle,

The plot thickens. This makes me wonder if there was actually anything at all much wrong with the OP's engine. ...

SUV are often claimed to provide two key advantages over lesser (priced) vehicles. First comes the "safe and commanding feel behind the wheel", claimed by this very website (www.honestjohn.co.uk/guides/best-suv). I have yet to see any empirical evidence of such a claim - a driver's gut feeling may say one thing but many reports say otherwise (e.g. tiny.cc/0s62vz ).
Alleged "safety" considerations aside, and without wishing to dispute the undoubted accessibility considerations of less able-bodied folk and those ferrying passengers in child seats, I am curious about the actual height "advantage". Exactly how many car lengths of visibility advantage is gained by driving a taller variant of a typical family hatchback? If the proliferation of similar vehicles is factored in, is there any advantage at all? Just wondering... Read more

I much prefer the feel of sitting lower down and not tipping around all over the place, but I find it physically uncomfortable.

The battery is just about managing in this cold weather and is ready for a change. Does anyone know if there anything that's likely to be affected when I do the swap - key codes, radio, etc? I've not had a problem swapping a battery in years but it's always worth an ask! Read more

Yikes. I didn't receive notification of this but it was all done very steadily so, with the exception of switching on the headlights, the procedure was followed. All seems well. Thank you for your response and I hope that it proves useful to others.

Any advice would be appreciated. Asking on behalf of son. He's come home from Nightshift this morning and gear box has gone. He said went from 1st gear into 2nd crunched and now won't go back into first. He's adamant he's just going to buy a second hand gearbox but I think he should get it reconditioned or at very least get a quote for a recon.

I just think at least having it reconditioned he'll get a little guarantee but with a second hand gearbox there's nothing to say same won't happen. ... Read more

Yesterday I backed my wife’s Mazda 2 out of the garage as she was late leaving for work. The engine, push button start with keyless start, was still running when she jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off. 20 minutes later she rang me saying there was a red warning light on the dash in the shape of a key. I suddenly realised that I still had her car key in my pocket!! I told her not to switch off the engine until she got to the office. Fortunately, I had disabled the stop/start function not long after she bought the car new in 2020.

it’s a shock to me that a keyless start car will keep running for miles without the key present. I would have thought that with technology these days that the computer would shut down the engine or apply the brakes in such circumstances. My Hyundai i30 flashes up a message on the dash that the key isn’t present when I get out to deice the windscreen. I find the notion of keyless start so disconcerting when my wife can drive for over 20 miles without the key present with the risk that stalling the engine could have left her stranded in the middle of rush hour traffic. Would the stop/start function have had a similar effect? ... Read more
