Booked my Skoda Octavia in for a service at a main dealership recently confident it didn’t need much out of the ordinary. The service advisor informed me that it was due an air filter, brake fluid and a set of spark plugs according to the service manager. I got home and consulted my print out of history to find that spark plugs had been replaced last year by another main dealer who had maintained the car from new(I have owned it for one year). I rang the dealer to query. They stated that the work was not listed with the records of Skoda uk. Surely you would think the records would align but alas no! Glad I insisted on a complete history print out when buying the car as there is no service book with the model. How many folks are ripped off by trusting the main dealer and having unnecessary work done?. Saved myself over £100 by checking. Read more
Interesting study by Volvo, abridged by AutoTrader, in which the point at which the greater environmental impact of producing an EV is offset by its zero emission in use is explained.

A friend has recently bought a new Nissan Leaf. He is certainly not expecting the battery to have lost that much capacity in 5 years time. It will be interesting to see how he gets on- so far he's loving it.
He doesn't really care much about its green credentials, likes it mote because it is new technology. For these to be low carbon we need to decarbonise the electricity supply, including the electrical supply in those countries where the lithium is refined and the batteries built.
Without going into the ins and outs of the newly set £50k for this benefit, can the country afford to be giving subsidy to high earners when there other far more deserving causes. Or have I got this completely wrong? Read more
Meanwhile today most OAPs are sweating on whether they will receive a pension increase of 2.5% or the Triple lock of 8%. If the manifesto promise is broken may be a compromise of something in the middle but I doubt it
The only reason the triple lock is giving 8% is because of a statistical lacuna because of the pandemic. Wages fell rapidly at the start of the pandemic and have now recovered. The drop wasn't reflected in last year's pension award and there's no rationale for allowing the return to normal to increase pensions. ...

Hello, I have just bought this RAV4 and the key casings are quite worn, one is split. Can I buy some kind of casing and put the innards into it without key cutting etc ? I have looked on ebay but none look quite right. The car docs say 2007 january so presumably it's more of a 2006 ? many Thanks Read more
I have found some but they say that the key part cannot be removed to use the old one. Not sure how hard it is to get it cut ? Maybe the only option. Thanks

For too many criminals (of all crimes), the justice system, whether prison or non-custodial sentences plus 'some kind' (often just playing at it, a box-ticking exercise to pander to the media, special interest groups and politicians) of rehab is just a 'revolving door' to further criminality down the line.

Hi there. Im in the market for buying a van.
My trusty fiat scudo has just been scrapped due to failing mot rust, ecu and exhaust problems. ... Read more
“ so with this in mind can you advise which is better to get.
transit that goes rusty or vivaro that might not be as mechanically reliable as the transit

Buy the one in the best condition. Forget likes and dislikes, you’d be mad to walk past a tidy Peugeot Van to buy a tatty Transit. I’d also expand the search to include every van of the size you need and again buy on condition. A Toyota Hiace can make for a good budget large van if you can find one that hasn’t been absolutely ruined. Many are owned by small shop owners but again they tend to keep them until they’re done.
I just found a great van on Auto Trader:

Peugeot’s can be robust with the 2.0 HDi diesels. This one owner example must’ve been good.

If you want to do a cover-up job on brake pipes (that probably isn't) apply vegetable oil,(linseed best but sunflower OK) then rub them with a bit of crumpled aluminium foil. Removes rust, fills in light pitting, lasts quite well, and looks like galvanising.
Rubbing dry first pre-removes rust and gives a better appearance but is a bit more hassle.

@ Senexdriver, I wonder how the failure to upload the service impacted your vehicle warranty?!
