The advice if you break down away from a layby is to climb over the safety barrier and get onto the verge. Try that if you are elderly or disabled! Read more

Climbing over the barrier is not always a good idea. My engine warning light came on came on when I was on the M25 and I made it on to the hard shoulder. Fortunately it was daylight and I knew that stretch of the M25 well. The other side of the barrier was the on slip road for the M3!

This country is now a hell hole to be in. Seems we are just earning money to line the pockets of others. We pay through the nose for absolutely everything. Why did vat never return back to 17.5% like it was in 2008 before the banks screwed up, it was temporarily lowered to 15% then 20% soon after where it remains.
I will never buy a brand new car out of principle as there is no way I'm paying the government an extra £320 in road tax for the first 5 years on a car. They are already getting £8k in vat when you buy a new car at £40k then all the tax on fuel, our salaries may aswell just divert from our own bank accounts and go straight into the chancellors. Although regular diesel is 148.9p/ltr at my local Shell garage the extra for premium diesel has rocketed to 15p/ltr making it now 163.9p/ltr. Formerly the premium was around 8p/ltr. When I asked why such an increase I was told at the paypoint that it was Shell who increased the price and no reason was given. That's an 88% increase in the premium. Robbery? I think so.

Last week twice visited an NT site in the Lake district.

There is a speed bump just before the exit ( poor visibility going on to a narrow road ). I believe speed bumps are valuable and I support their use.... Read more

I've always wondered this so worth asking the forum

Is there such a thing as a nippy budget used hatchback ( say sub 10 secs ) that has simple mechanics and I mean by that no turbo or other expensive gubbins that can go wrong and cost a bomb to fix ... Read more

Ive got a 2009 Hyundai i10 1.2, and I was surprised at just how nippy it is.

The HJ review quotes 0-60 as 12.8 secs but as said above that doesn't mean much. It's 82hp in a light car so is perky, especially if you use the revs available but you can still sit comfortably at 70 at 3000rpm. Cheap to run and maintain. £30 pa ved....

Make sure you know how much they might charge you in regards to damage, wear and mileage as this is where they make the extra money. Also if the new car you want is used they're definitely at the moment more expensive because of the car shortage so make sure this is a good offer.

Hi all,
I drove to London yesterday. I wasn’t sure of my exact route in and stopping points so didn’t pay the congestion charge in advance.
I’m trying to pay it today.
I have paid the ULEZ charge.
I’d there a way of finding out if I have to pay anything else?
Like, can I just put in my registration somewhere?
I have the route I took.
It was to the E1 area. Read more

You should be OK with E1 provided your route did not go further into the City. Best to check exactly where you drove. Look here tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/congestion-charge

HI, The coolant for my Polo should be G13 but this seems hard to find, most of it is G12+. The G13 I have seen is either green or yellow and mine is pink. The car was 2 years old when I bought it and I'm sure it's the original still in.

Does anyone know if G12 would be ok to use? Any advice welcome. Thanks.... Read more

Rerepo

G13 is light red or violet colour - not green or yellow.

G12+ and G13 are fully compatible - you can top up with either.

Many years ago, I lived with my parents in a terraced house. In front of the houses were three parking bays. I bought my first car but it had no tax. My father told me that I could park it in one of the bays legally because there was a dark line in the road in front of all three parking bays and that depicted the parking bays behind the line as classed as off road. I now live in a block of flats and there was a line similar to the one at the old property in front of nine parking bays until they resurfaced the road and covered this line over. Was my father correct in saying that this line depicts off road? Read more

On road or off road if your car is at any risk the argument is immaterial. You need to have it insured

The SORN rules relate to on- or off-road taxation. If a car is correctly SORNed and thus free of VED, presumably it is on private land and is insurable in the same way as other domestic items ?
