I have a timing belt kit which I bought a few years ago for a Renault 1.5DCI engine. It was never used, as the customer changed their mind about keeping the car. My daughter has now bought a Megane. The belt kit I have will do the job for her car, but although I am mechanic/retired with more years than I care to think about, I simply don't know if the belt, although not used and kept in the original box in my workshop on a shelf, will have degraded in any way. Is there a cut off point/shelf life maximum with any belt of this type? Thanks, Dave. Read more

I have seen a car listed for sale at a large independent dealer. It is a 2015 Japanese family car, which has 29,000 miles on the clock.
However, when I checked MOT history, things don't add up:... Read more

Can we keep this forum to motoring please. Vaccines (and especially Brexit if people must, personally I think it's been done to death) in the General/non-motoring forum.

In an idle moment I was having a look on the motoring section of MSN news just there.
The point of the article was to show how much equivalent cars have grown in size over the years but I was just struck, quite powerfully, by how ugly and graceless current models were in comparison to their ancestors. Is it just me or as I'm increasingly convinced, did car design really peak about 50 years ago (I suspect there are far more compelling examples than in the linked article here). I know about reliability, comfort, performance and safety and that there's no comparison between now and then but c'mon, what about aesthetics and grace?... Read more

Agreed. I believe that if there was an engine issue, Kia would expect you to show that the right oil and filters had been used. You might be able to do that if you had a full, detailed invoice from the garage that did the work. They seem to be good at paying up if you've had the kia dealer do the servicing....
Hi Everyone,
I bought 2006 XTrail diesel .... overall It's a wonderful vehicle .... There are two problems for which I need your guidance:
1. It has no pick or very sluggish in low RPM (below 2200) sometimes I have to pick my foot from the paddle slowly to get it rev.
2. It's smokes alot but only below 2000 rpm after that it's all fine.
EGR is clean and Air filter is clean and is k&N. Read more

I have a Kia Sportage which I got just over 3 years ago on pcp. It was an approved used car and was an ex demo so has lots of bells and whistles on e.g panoramic sunroof, heated and vented seats, blind spot detection, lane assist, speed limit notification etc.

Hi All. Hoping someone will be able to help with a bit of a head-scratcher !!
I'm getting a code P0444 - EVAP Control System - Open Circuit.
I've done all the checks on the Purge Valve itself, and all seems to be working ok.
Continuity - OK
Resistance - 25 ohms
Audible click when connected to a 9v battery
No vacuum at idle when feed disconnected
But when I checked the voltage at the Purge Valve connector, it reads 3.9 volts - Should it be reading battery voltage ??
It triggers the Check Engine light, which when erased, comes back on when engine is started. There are no other fault codes present other than P0444.
I'm assuming this is going to be an MOT failure as it is related to Emissions.
Any help greatly appreciated ... Read more
You need to load test the power supply wire with a bulb . The circuit is fused , so could be a bad connection at the fuse location. Could be one in the engine bay fuse box . Not sure which one , as there are so many different levels of fuse box fitted to these Golf models . Shouldn’t be too difficult for an auto tech to sort this out .
Just an update on the Golf - Purge Valve - Open Circuit problem
After doing a bit of trawling on Google, I found out that it was either F23 or F24 in the engine bay, that controlled the feed to the Purge Solonoid (N80) ... ...

I shouldn't worry. Modern 21st century aramid belts don't deteriorate much over time. The cambelt in our family Focus is over twenty years old and still works fine. Even the 1980 fan/alternator belt on my TR7 is still working ..... and the thirty year old spare under the seat still looks OK! Changing belts just because a certain amount of time has passed makes very little sense these days....
