I’ve just parked my Jaguar for what will probably be six weeks, and I’m debating whether or not to disconnect the battery. It’s a fresh Yuasa, so in good condition, so the debate is to either wield an 8mm spanner and remove the earth lead or not.
It’s parked on the street so a trickle charger isn’t an option, and it’s now too late to get a solar charger. Read more

If the S-type is anything like Land Rovers (albeit it is on a Lincoln/Ford chassis not LR), there will be a manual override in the centre console, usually you have to remove some plastic to get to it. On the Discovery 3 for example www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RsDGy_Kp6c

It’s a case of lifting the boot floor, pulling the earth lead off the battery for a few seconds, reconnecting again and resetting the EPB. I’ve not had to do it since fitting a new battery. I did discover that the single most useful tool to carry in the S-Type is an 8mm spanner, being careful not to drop it down the side of the battery…

The search goes on for a replacement for my A4 B6 Tdi 130
I also have a Toyota Corolla Verso 2003 1.6 which I have been really surprised by. Especially the driving position and high entry and exit which I really appreciate .

But neither has air con so the search goes on and I have decided my ideal replacement is a RAV 4 diesel without no 4wd , manual and above all no Dpf . MK 2 up to 2010 ?
Can you tell me what year the RAV 4 diesel was fitted with a Dpf ? Read more

I’d stick with petrol too unless you’re putting a lot more money into the pot for this purchase. Even without a DPF a modern diesel is much more costly to maintain and repair. The petrol is bulletproof. I can vouch for Toyota’s A/C system though, it’s still working very well on my 11yr old Avensis and is usually functional on any older Toyota I’ve sold.

Just had my catalytic converter sawn off my hybrid Toyota Auris this evening from right outside my house. This all seems a bit late and doesn’t really deal with the problem. We will be looking for a new car for which this isn’t such a problem because just marking with Smart***er doesn’t actually stop them from stealing it. Read more

Smart water isn't going to help. Catalytic converter theft is big business. One group even had their own smelting equipment. What is needed are cats that are more difficult to remove and a more robust police response. The thieves are so confident that they are prepared to threaten the public with knives and iron bars if challenged, secure in the knowledge that the police aren't coming anytime soon. If they found themselves looking down the wrong end of a taser or an MP5 then the job might be less attractive.

I have a timing belt kit which I bought a few years ago for a Renault 1.5DCI engine. It was never used, as the customer changed their mind about keeping the car. My daughter has now bought a Megane. The belt kit I have will do the job for her car, but although I am mechanic/retired with more years than I care to think about, I simply don't know if the belt, although not used and kept in the original box in my workshop on a shelf, will have degraded in any way. Is there a cut off point/shelf life maximum with any belt of this type? Thanks, Dave. Read more

I shouldn't worry. Modern 21st century aramid belts don't deteriorate much over time. The cambelt in our family Focus is over twenty years old and still works fine. Even the 1980 fan/alternator belt on my TR7 is still working ..... and the thirty year old spare under the seat still looks OK! Changing belts just because a certain amount of time has passed makes very little sense these days....

Can we keep this forum to motoring please. Vaccines (and especially Brexit if people must, personally I think it's been done to death) in the General/non-motoring forum.

In an idle moment I was having a look on the motoring section of MSN news just there.

The point of the article was to show how much equivalent cars have grown in size over the years but I was just struck, quite powerfully, by how ugly and graceless current models were in comparison to their ancestors. Is it just me or as I'm increasingly convinced, did car design really peak about 50 years ago (I suspect there are far more compelling examples than in the linked article here). I know about reliability, comfort, performance and safety and that there's no comparison between now and then but c'mon, what about aesthetics and grace?... Read more

Hi Everyone,
I bought 2006 XTrail diesel .... overall It's a wonderful vehicle .... There are two problems for which I need your guidance:
1. It has no pick or very sluggish in low RPM (below 2200) sometimes I have to pick my foot from the paddle slowly to get it rev.
2. It's smokes alot but only below 2000 rpm after that it's all fine.

EGR is clean and Air filter is clean and is k&N. Read more

I have a Kia Sportage which I got just over 3 years ago on pcp. It was an approved used car and was an ex demo so has lots of bells and whistles on e.g panoramic sunroof, heated and vented seats, blind spot detection, lane assist, speed limit notification etc.
