Great idea make the poor who can't afford electric vehicles pay, just price them off the road.
Those people that are on minimum wages or on zero hours contract also low paid carers that don't even get paid for traveling to and from patients. Yes there are exemptions but it is usually the poorest that fall through the loop hole.
Why are electric vehicles exempt when they too produce pollution, rubber from tyres and brake dust wear and tear on roads due the the increased weight of the vehicles. The free ride will have to end soon as the cost of road repairs will keep falling on a ever decreasing number of ICE vehicles and their drivers.

I am not against EV's but I think everyone should pay their share.

Why? free charging someone has to pay for the electric. As with the Diesel con the government can quickly change it's way of thinking and with every mum and dad being able to take little Jimmy to school in their pollution free EV the roads will become more and more gridlocked because don't forget the great increase in the number of cyclists!! has meant in my area main roads being reduced from two lanes down to one and footpaths being widened making roads narrower, which in my opinion has made it more dangerous for cyclists. Who the majority prefer to ride on the pavement for safety. Read more

You could try contacting your local Nissan dealer to see if they have any records of your car . Could be lucky . Failing that, the radio needs to be taken out to access the serial number . Not a 5 min job on these as the top of the dash needs to be removed. Code can be obtained from flea bay for less than £5

Hi there,
I bought a second hand Torneo Connect, 2008 model about 2 years ago. August last year, check engine light and loss of power so the car stopped. The garage I took it to said it was diagnosing errors in EGR valve and the second injector. We changed the EGR valve. 9 months later the same problem, I sent it back to the original garage, they said that a faulty butterfly valve to the EGR was stopping it from working properly, so changed that. Now 3 weeks later, same problem again, Check engine light, loss of power, car won´t run properly. This seems to happen when I´m on the motorways. But since then I have moved cities.
Took it to a different garage in my new city, they say two errors diagnosed: the same 2 as before: EGR valve and injector 2.
I told them the EGV valve was changed and then checked 3 weeks ago.
So they say, send it back to the garage (as it´s still under guarentee for the parts) or change the injector and see what happens.
An injector is an expensive job to do.
I definately trust this garage more than the last one.
The last one claimed they had checked it and it was working...
I don´t know what to think.
I seem to be spending a lot of money on this car this year and am not sure if its worth it.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Cant be of specific help, since I have no personal experience of 21st century cars, and don't want any, but I do know that a lot of garages with experience of 21st century cars don't know what they are doing with them.

The tendency is to change whatever reports the error, though the fault may lie elsewhere....

I’m looking at buying a 2008 Polo 1.2 Petrol. 2 owners and 43,000 miles.

However, I’m unsure about the engine on these cars as I’ve never had a 1.2 before. I read the the cam belt gear is plastic and the there’s an issue with timing belt jumping teeth. Is it this particular model?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Read more

I had a Soda with the 3 cylinder 1.2 non turbo engine and it was okay, a bit thrummy though. A few years later I bought a 1.2tsi Polo later but that had the 4 cylinder engine, the issue with certain production runs of that motor was to do with the cam chains stretching due to poor machine tooling used in manufacturing the links. Plenty of info out there online. I had a new one for a couple of years and it drove very nicely, but I tend to stay with Japanese cars these days.

UPDATE! PROBLEM IS SORTED! was the bonnet sensor switch that was the issue! I disconnected it, no more issues, no lights or message on dash! When i opened bonnet before, it would still remain 'flush', it wouldn't pop up a little, which is what made me suspicious of it!

I went to a BMW dealer and tried a used car. Its computer shows it was last serviced over 18 months ago. I was also told that there is no need for an ordinary interim or full service like before, but only to follow the instructions given by the computer on what parts need to be replaced and checked. Does this mean the normal service done by the local garage around the corner won’t be recognized by the smart system? It is not convincing to sign up a service package for a second-hand car yet. Thank you!

This explains a neighbour drove all the way to Cambridge and back to charge the car battery.

Bit confused there. The DPF has nothing to do with the battery....

The whole point of insurance is to price the cost of repairs against the risk of an accident, theft, etc, etc, in addition to the claims history down to the person driving the car and the risk of claims due to the area the live/work.

Whether a car is 'green' or not should have, in my opinion, zero to do with the premium charged, especially as many poorer people cannot afford EVs and won't for the forseeable future, let alone 'newer' ICE engined (including hybrid) cars....

Basically, I just want to get a broad range of opinions from you guys about where money is best placed based on the market just now, with everything considered. Which are the second hand cars you think give the most value for money for mixed driving between city, b roads and motorway, with no specific family or work requirements, just a reliable, fun, fairly economical car with a decent milage on the secondhand market. Where would your money be going?

Are you selling, John? Hope not!

Nope. Only just got its 'historic vehicle' V5C. Applied in April and got it within four weeks. Had to fettle the joints of the four inch rubber pipe connecting the petrol tank to the fuel line; the December MoT (must have one for the 'historic' V5C) had spotted slight oozing. Had to syphon off the fuel. Then first proper drive for six months to get fresh fuel. Hood down, clear country road into town....bliss! So happy I forgot to put the filler cap back on - the second time I've done that in 40yrs. Ignored a faint clatter zooming out of Morrisons petrol station, like running over a strip of metal. Rapid return in the Pug - kind lady on the till had retrieved it. Phew!

I wonder how many have seen their reliable entertaining work-horse evolve into a historic vehicle? What would I choose today? ...

I'd also recommend the food at Tebay, not your usual motorway services burger-or-nothing, but a good selection of tasty knife-and-fork food.
