Hi all,
I'm having some trouble with replacing my alternator.
I have removed all bolts and connectors but came across a problem when disconnecting the last one (it's a thick rubber tube). I pulled the tube off and oil began running out of the end. I'd guess i'd had it off for no more than 5 minutes before replacing the tube and calling it a day. (it started to rain anyway )
I've dabbled with bits and bobs with cars and usually through YouTube videos and forums i can repair and replace parts, so it's not as though i'm completely useless at these things it's just that for the most part i follow what has been shown. ie. i know i need to disconnect this piece because that's what the video showed me, but it doesn't always mean i know what it is. So that being said, i'm assuming this is the oil connector. But, i only really read about small amounts of oil coming out, whereas mine was a consistent flow for up to nearly 5 minutes.
I took pictures throughout and i've labelled the pipe I THINK the oil was coming from....
I have a Vauxhall Astra sri ctdi, 05 plate, Diesel.
Please could someone advise me on what to do as i'm not sure where to go from here!
Thanks in advance Read more
Hi all, just a little query for the tech experts on here regarding Ford's powershift transmissions. I'm led to believe there are two types fitted to the mk3 facelift Focus, a dry clutch arrangement in the petrol engined variants, but the diesel engined ones utilise a wet clutch set -up. From what i've heard the dry one has proved problematic with owners the world over sueing the pants off Ford. But the only info i have on the wet one is that its generally reliable providing the transmission fluid and filter are changed every 36k or 3yrs (whichever is sooner). Does this sound correct?. Thanks in anticipation for any response. Read more

My walk to the local library this afternoon took me past the Primary school. About 3/4 of an hour before kicking out time so plenty of cars parked up, engines running, parent/grandparent on smartphone. Moan over.
One car was a 19reg Mercedes A Class. Engine running, DLRs on, reversing lights on, image on reversing camera. Thought maybe only just parked up - although mum was on phone. 10 minutes later on my way back, the car was still there as previously described. I can't imagine the mum was sitting riding the clutch (road has slight incline) all that time. So what was going on? I've never had an EPB or an automated manual (if it was one). Read more
I can only comment on my current Mazda 3 which is my first car with an EPB. It also has Autohold (operated with an 'A' switch next to the EPB switch) which is a separate function although obviously both use the same brake mechanism.
The EPB is engaged manually except when parking where it comes on automatically when the ignition is turned off. It releases automatically when the car moves forward (not in reverse) or can be released manually. Autohold defaults to off each time the car is started but stays active after pressing the 'A' switch. It will be applied if the car comes to a complete halt with the footbrake pressed. It releases automatically when the car moves off....

It is a pity that the other two links are closed as I am learning something new every day re EVs. The attached link is largely quotes from VW but makes interesting reading.

The key for the success (or otherwise) in the coming decade(s) for EVs to become both affordable to buy and run (including the longevity and availability/price of parts) over the long term is:
- For battery technology to improve enough that no charging is required in any normal usage circumstances (e.g. in the depths of winter) for approaching 400 miles;
- That the batteries take no more space and weight than ICE fuel and are easy (quick/cheap) to replace and charge (no more than 10 minutes for charging to 100%, preferably less) and do not require very expensive kit to do either;
- The battery materials are widely available in terms of mining and production and can be easily and cheaply recycled in an enviromnetally-friendly and low labour intensive way;
- Charging facilities and Infrastructure are very cheap to produce, buy and install. Planning and tax policies are changed so that both existing (especially) and new housing and commercial properties can invest long term in charging infrastructure, but without needless subsidies being given to already wealthy individuals and firms when they could already charge lower prices. There needs to be proper competition to ensure both high quality products come through and prices come down.
I am personally very wary of just a few large corporations (especially if they are backed by governments, e.g. China) controlling the vast majority, if not all certain aspects of the tech, e.g. battery materials. China has in recent years been effectively 'buying up' much of Africa's (and elsewhere) mineral resources in return for very little (especially when a lot ends up in the hands of dictators or couurpt politicians, officials and business people and not the general population)....
Changing my car later this year but would like new tyres now as they are nearing the limit.
Can anyone recommend a decent quality but reasonably priced budget tyre, if such a thing exists. ... Read more
Many thanks all.
I only cover about 5000 a year and intend to change vehicle in the summer so didn't want to spend a fortune. I've found I can get a set of Avons at a very good price so I'll probably stick with those. ...

Just had an issue with a used car purchase that made me think, bought a Tesla model S direct from Tesla, and it hadn't been wiped properly by the previous owner or by Tesla themselves.
Had access to the previous owners email, home address, spotify account and access to the automatic garage door opener. along with a list of all his destinations since he purchased the car. even a list of his drs appointments on the in car calendar.... Read more
Presumably the previous owner had the car had it synced with his phone. I think the Skoda can import my contacts but not much else. My daughter has hers set up in her Octavia and car has microphone to facilitate hands free and I assume Fabia has same functionality.
When you link an Android phone to our Fabia (2018 SEL) by USB to use Android Auto it does indeed download contacts. There is a microphone symbol but never tried it....
Would it be okay then to allow the oil to spill into a pan whilst I complete the replacement? Then after check my oil levels and top up.
Thanks
