I can't find any suggestion that routine maintenance should include changing PAS fluid. My Pug 306 is now 25 years old, and I'm sure auto-transmission fluid (the same stuff) would have been replaced during that time. I doubt that will have happened to this car, though it has been properly serviced. Of course PAS fluid doesn't get hot during use, so any suggestions ? . Read more
Does anyone know if there are two different dual mass flywheels for an '08 1.5dci engine? There are short and long crank sensors, so they must relate to differences somewhere.
Slightly longwinded backstory: stepdaughter's Qashqai had a flywheel and clutch fitted in the autumn, by Christmas the starter failed and jammed the flywheel, then yesterday it wouldn't start and the end of the crank sensor is badly damaged. Theory: specialist clutch garage fitted the wrong flywheel, close enough but the starter mesh was poor, so that failed and the crank sensor has been in contact so that has failed.... Read more
I've recently got a 1.4 TDI 6C (2016) - which seems fine apart from one odd thing. The cooling fan seems to be getting triggered on occasions when it really shouldn't.
It doesn't happen all the time, but there have been several occasions when it's been quite cold outside (3 or 4 deg C), I've started the engine from cold first thing in the morning having sat overnight, and after a few seconds the cooling fan starts. Looking at the coolant gauge it's not even left 0 yet, and the oil temperature on the dash isn't registering any temperature at all.... Read more
Very likely to be part of the dpf regeneration process . The cooling fan will run at odd times , not only when the coolant gets hot .
Today on the M25 I went under a gantry showing a red X over the outside lane. A mile later there was a sign saying in 800yds the outside lane would be closing. The X had already closed the lane, so what was the 800yds sign for? The lane is already closed and empty. I have noticed this type of signage a few times now as though it is normal practice. The road works sign says the lane is closing in 800yds but it was actually closed a mile earlier by the red X. Its like having a 50 on the overhead sign then a mile later a sign saying that in 800yds the speed limit is 50. It's not in 800yds, i's now!
My friend has a 2017 ford fiesta with a little black sensor looking thing on the dashboard, does anyone know what it is exactly?

Apparently it's part of the climate control system - a black bulb sensor to account for the radiant heat from the sun (the air temperature sensor lower down the dash wouldn't be able to account for this)

Could we have a separate forum for radio codes as it might save a lot of people asking the same question? Read more
What I was trying to say is that people have a specific request for a code related to a particular serial number and they won't get the answer by searching the forum or a particular thread.
The answers are generated on a case-by-case basis by those of us who able to help.
Well I've seen some particularly stupid videos here in S Wales of people deliberately driving through clearly deep flood water on the roads and the subsequent completely predictable stalling, floating away etc of the ruined car. I was wondering whether these kinds of actions are covered by comprehensive insurance or not. I would have thought not, as a deliberate action to wreck one's car is surely not covered? Different of course to a parked car being over-whelmed by water through no fault of the owner. Read more
Justice! (for once). Certainly put a smile on my face.
Every time I set off from home, I pull out from my parking on to a road on an incline. Nothing drastically steep but in order to get up to the flow speed of the road, I'm faced with the choice of over revving all the way up the road in first on a recently started engine or changing to second early and lugging the engine a bit.
What's the best way to tackle this? It doesn't sound like a big deal but as it's something I'll be doing almost daily, I could really do damage in the long run if I'm doing it wrong. Read more
Indeed - apart from the implication that running on 'min' is harmful. It isn't. Apart from the early tens of thousands of miles when little oil is used, I always wait until the level is at or just below 'min' before changing the oil. It's less wasteful and there's less to dispose of.
I really wouldn't want to be running with oil at minimum, prefer to have some margin in hand should a leak develop. An extra half litre to pour into the tank at the tip is neither here nor there.
They may well have quite a collection of older British cars in New Zealand. A work colleague emigrated there in 1971. As well as the usual goods and chattels he took his car too. A nice fairly new Vauxhall Victor estate. He told me that cars were so prohibitively expensive there at the time it was more economical to ship it out. He would have lost money here with a sale and have to pay over the odds there, so he worked it out and opted to take it. I suspect many others may have done the same and some could easily survive. Interesting.

GM has just announced that it is closing down its Australian, New Zealand and Thailand operations. It closed its Australian factories a couple of years ago and relied on imports which have not sold well. Holden was always a well loved Australian brand and had a fierce rivalry with Ford, more like the enthusiasm that people show for football teams. It is going to be greatly missed. It looks like GM is giving up on right hand drive cars totally. Read more
And on John Cadogan's video, at about 10.30 onwards - if you thought the UK had a monopoly on incompetent muppets as ministers, think again.
Karen Andrews, the Australian industry minister is excruciatingly ill informed as JC so enthusiastically points out......!
