So this is progress !
DAB car radios , I have found have inferior sound to FM and most importantly constantly lose signal.
The loss of a multi change CD player is also sadly missed.
Electric handbrakes come next on my list of pet hates along with DPF shananagin s now on petrol as well as diesel cars.
Finally can we go back to dipswitches on the floor and indicator arms on the right hand side of the steering wheel !
PS I am sadly missing my Sony Trinitron TV with a square scree that I have recently updated Read more
Are the Auris catalytic converter thefts just on the hybrid model or does it apple to other petrol versions such as the 1.2? Read more
“ It is a worry. I live in what I still think is a civilised Northants conservation village and a nocturnal thief tried to steal a cat from a villager's Renault (don't know the model) the other day.”
Glad I’m up here in sunny Ayrshire then, I’ve yet to hear of anyone suffer this here. Maybe our lot are a bit behind the times or perhaps the certain types that are doing this aren’t here in any numbers yet. Bit cold for most illegals up here. Plus anything hung under a car up here tends to rot away pretty quick.
The paint on the Golf has always had a reasonable shine, appearance-wise. However it felt rough even after a wash and using a good polish on a test area. I was beginning to wonder if there was a serious paint issue as it was so bad to the touch.
Off to the usual online store and people were extolling the virtues of clay barring ( which sounds a faff) or using a clay mitt. Apparently the latter offered a wipe on/wipe off with only limited elbow grease with the right lubricant. So that's what I ordered despite doubting that it could be that good.
Well I have to say it was brilliant. You feel the mitt binding at the first pass but it soon glides over in successive passes and the finish still looks shiny but feels completely smooth. A good wax later and the job's a good un.
So having been disappointed in many a wonder product (scratch pens etc) it was great to find one that actually worked. Read more
Much obliged for the detailed reply. I think you are right about my doing a large area.
US car insurance rates have risen and this is being attributed to the increased costs of repairs to modern gadget filled cars.

Everybody take the line of least resistance:
- motorist knows that for any other than a "minor" insuarance will sort it out
- garages specify the max amount of work to repair the car as this makes them more profit (also pricey hire cars)
- insurance companies happy to settle knock for knock if they can - less hassle
- insurance companies know that the motorist has no choice but to pay the insurance premium anyway

Transit eh? Turkeys finest produce.
Approaching a junction which happens to be a bit of an accident black spot in my neck of the woods, i saw what appeared to be two identical cars in positions which made it clear they had crashed into each other. As i got closer, i realised that in actual fact one was a silver Citroen C1, the other was a silver toyota Aygo, so not quite identical, but as near as dammit!. The C1 was on the verge, but the Aygo was down an embankment and had clearly rolled. It was a weird sight, and got me thinking about how often this might happen, that two very similar or identical cars crash into each other?. Especially somewhere with a pretty low density of people like rural Aberdeenshire!. Anyone else seen similar?
BTW, the damage on the cars suggested any injuries would have been relatively minor. Read more
My sister ran into her ex's car at the local Tescos. I think it was accidental!
Two chaps in my local have just independently bought SSangyong Korrando's. They look decent and substantial vehicles. They both have small farms and tow trailers and horse boxes etc. One is brand new and the other second hand. The new one was about £20k and used one about £16k. Looks like a lot of car for the money. A dealership is located about 15 miles away in Maidstone for servicing etc. They come with a 7 year warranty too. I shall watch with interest their progress. Not too familiar with this brand and don't see many around but no doubt forum members will have experience of them. Very tempting price if you tow.

Have often considered a Tourismo but the depreciation is too much , be worth £4k or less after 5 years and 80k miles plus

The cure for crabbing C43’s is switch to 18” wheels. MB paid for mine when I complained about the behaviour of the car on 19s. They provided the alternate fitment MB wheels and tyres FOC. I still have them as the new owner of my 3yr old C43 preferred the look of the original fit 19’s....

But presumably this website (and DT column) does rely on people sticking to the "drive from new to x years and then replace" mentality (where x is between 2 and 4)?
The bath-tub failure curve would indicate that if you have got a car to three years old without significant problems you are probably OK until 10 years or 100,000 miles. You are paying next to nothing in depreciation and any finance is probably paid off....
The anti-theft light (located below the dash clock) used to flash continuously every few seconds once the car was locked. It doesn't come on at all now. Does this mean that the anti-theft system doesn't work? Any way to get the light to come back on once the car is locked? Many thanks. Read more
Does it illuminate if you turn the ignition on. ? Should light up for around 3 secs before starting .It is part of the pats immobiliser system.

Know of a MG3 67 plate with over 20k on it trouble free.
They love the car except for the engine which they say is slow to respond.and must be revved hard

I find the quality of sound on the DAB better than on FM, but that DAB frequently cuts out leaving silence. If the station is also broadcast on FM (eg many BBC stations) the radio seamlessly switches over (I only know because the display changes) but if listening to stations like Magic, Smooth and Virgin radio I end up with silence. Also, I've lost AM, not that I used to listen very often.
As for CD player, I do have one tucked away in the glove box, but better to stream music via Bluetooth from the mobile phone to the audio unit, I have full control and stay legal this way.
