Hi - I'd be grateful of some assistance in diagnosing a whirring / rattling at 2000 rpm on my wife's 1.4tdci Fiesta (2010).
When revved when stationary it sounds like a rattle but when under load it's more of a whistle. The 'whistle' sounds almost like a traditional fan belt slipping although not as loud (I was always told that's what made high pitched squeals on cars years ago so forgive me if that makes no sense).... When I remove the oil filler cap there is a noticeable vacuum trying to prevent its' removal. A vacuum is also noticeable through the dipstick tube. Can't say I've ever come across a vacuum before on other cars, only perhaps a little pressure from worn valve guides. Should there be vacuum on these engines? Read more
If your looking to keep the car buy a copy of vcds of amazon for about £40 you will definitely not regret it. You can do pretty much anything with it and the engine changing idle this shows a vacuum leak it nearly stalling shows it was running lean. With the regards of changing the phone. Please. P.c.v valve you would only need to change it if there's oil in the intake pipe if there isn't it hasn't failed and I can't remember what it looks like on your engine but for example the diesel pd engine you have to replace the whole rocker cover not cheap.

Hi, looking for some suggestions on used cars. At the moment I have a 05 civic 1.6,which is ok to drive, but on a motorway it's really revvy. At average motorway speeds in 5th gear it can sit at almost 4k rpm all the time(it redlines at 6.5krpm i think) and this makes long journeys not pleasant.I am lucky if I get 40mpg out of it.So now I am looking for another car.Something petrol, jazz-golf size and which is good on fuel, reliable and that will be better on a motorway than current car.My budget is 4k and I do about 10k miles per year with most of the miles on motorway and country roads. It needs to cheap on insurance ideally below insurance group 20.Any suggestions ?

It's interesting isn't it that most of the key players in the Brexit camp seem to come from the hard old fashioned right? Down with the workers, bring back hanging and the whip etc etc .

Hi,
I recently had my car serviced and defects were found, the most severe are below:
Front brakes and pads - Red - legal to take away from garage but require replacing
Small engine leaks
This has prompted me to get another vehicle and part ex mine. I have been offered 950 for my 10 plate car. The only my inspection was a foot on the accelerator and asking about the Mot and the cosmetics. Am I legally obliged to inform the dealer about the details from the last service or is a sold as seen attitude sufficent. I would imagine the dealer has offered only the information that suits his sale but I do not want to be in a position where this will come back to haunt me.
Additionally is the dealer required to check the status of the vehicle before he sells it on?

Garages will always charge full retail, and they may also fit genuine parts which are expensive. Quick fit outfits usually fit cheap and cheerful (not alwaysl parts. Garages need to guarantee their work which incurrs a cost to them which they have to cover.
All pads are covered by ECE R90 regs. so are always reasonable quality. Discs are not covered by any such regulations so thats where money is saved, with cheap discs made in china and india to significantly lower standards....
Hi there,
Does anyone know what sort of thing constitutes a 'fault' with a used car which means it can be rejected under the new consumer act? Can it only be a major mechanical fault? It is very difficult to find out online.... Read more

Help! my little peugeot is leaking brake fluid like crazy! I cannot seem to find where it is leaking from. It doesn't leak when it is stationary, only when I apply pressure to the brake. My handbrake is holding perfectly fine also..

The brake servo can fail on older 306s. Have a look inside and see if its full of brake fluid.
DMF was dropped from production in 2003. SMF after that. On cost versus benefit grounds I recall.
