A similar problem exists in Europe, I have heard of it happening here in France but not suffered the problem. The stone marten and beech marten here are a close relative of the UK polecat, ferret and pine marten etc.

They are called fouines over here and are certainly not above hanging around habitations and will get into the lofts and attics of old houses to nest while the houses are lived in....

So you advise not to buy a Forester as the chain driven CVT needs a new belt but all Japanese cars are reliable.

The OP appears to be saying it needs a new gearbox every 50,000 miles "I was going to buy the forester but the chain driven cvt auto gearbox apparently needs changing every 50k and is around 4k to replace the box as they don't replace just the belt"...

I am moving jobs soon and will be driving in a city centre on a daily basis. My BMW 120D is coming up for renewal and I've started to look at Hybrids that have plenty of power and will give 50,000 trouble free miles. A friend gave me a go in his Auris Hybrid recently and I was surprised by how well it went and how smooth it was. Called in to the local deler this evening on way home from work and he had a lovely red Rav4 2.5 Hybrid that seems well equipped and well screwed together.

Am I mad or should go back to BMW to look at an i3? Read more

The BMW i3 is Auris size so a lot smaller than a RAV-4. It's also a different type of car - I wouldn't really call it a hybrid - in that it's sold as two models, pure electric or 'range extender' which has a small 2-cylinder petrol engine added to the main electric motor.

Whether a hybrid suits you depends on your type of motoring and style of driving. If it's going to be mainly in the city, a hybrid is at its best. But if you also do a lot of open-road driving, you'll find a hybrid lacking in performance compared with your 120D. If you often need a healthy burst of acceleration, such as in overtaking or joining a motorway, a hybrid with CVT, like the RAV-4, will make a lot of high-revving noise with not much to show for it....

A couple of days ago the battery light came on on the dash a few times on the way home. Later it became permanently lit. The following day car used briefly a couple of times but on return home it would not restart. Battery flattened trying. Tried charging battery and it took charge but will still not start and no sound of fuel pump running. Also will not jump start. All fuses fine and garage are confused. Is there anything electrical that would stop engine starting because of an underlying fault? Hoping to avoid a trip to main dealership which may not be financially viable although car is otherwise a great runner. Read more

If you have a laptop Forscan code readers are very good. Can get off eBay etc. One end is OBD the other is USB. You get a CD with software also. It works well IMHO. Better than a generic reader anyway. elm327 approx £17

Stay or Go advocates will never give a definitive answer to what will happen either way. Either side has no way of predicting what will happen so waitng for someone to give facts will just see the clock count down with no answer at the end of it.

Your vote cannot be based on any sort of definitive manifesto laid out by a political party - because there ain't one. Therefore in the absence of that detail do what you believe as a citizen. Don't look for technical answers because there are none. ...

Might be cheaper to buy 2 "new chairs" from a "posh scrappy" that fit than try to get 1 chair to match the passenger seat.

I really enjoy reading the technical matter entries but I can't believe how many there are for Ford radio code problems. What is going on here? Regards to all. Read more

My thoughts are that it all to do with numbers of vehicles. There are possibly more Fords on our roads than any other make. Also Ford is one of the last manufacturers to use radio code system up to around 2008.They also change owners regularly and paperwork relating to the radio gets lost.
