I need to replace my ageing car and I'm looking at brand new cars. It's a long long time since I last bought one.

Currently I see Vauxhall are offering a £2000 scrappage scheme which is far more than the value of my existing car. Through my wife's job I also qualify for Vauxhall's partner scheme which would give me 8% discount on the list price. These deals make Vauxhall worth a look for me.... Read more

The important thing is to find a seller selling one which has the REV C firmware in it.

Without that you're limited to Peugeot Planet and Diagbox 5, which is ancient, slow, clunky and unreliable....

Peugeot 308 1.4 Petrol engine requires frequent topping up of oil. It uses less than manual states as normal but has to be watched. Is this normal? I'm told that the engine is made by BMW. Thanks for the help. Read more

Some engines do use oil some don't. I have two idenical diesel engines in a Peugeot 406 and a Citroen C5, the 406 has done 243,000 miles and uses no oil at all the C5 has only done 200k and often needs topping up.

It depends largely on how well the car has been looked after, particularly the frequency of oil changes.

I am hoping for some advice from you all! We own two cars, but as I got a new job we now only need one. We're hesitating about what to do. Below is a description of each car and my view of the pros and cons of the different options. We need the car for my partner's commute and for occasional holidays, so around 15000 miles per year.
car 1 ford focus estate, 2005; 143,000 miles; diesel At the last MOT we changed 2 tires and the break pads, and the timing belt and water pumps were changed about 2 years ago. car 2 nissan micra 5 door; 2006; 23,000 miles; petrol It has only had 1 owner before me, and is in mint condition (nothing flagged at last MOT). Option 1: sell the micra pros - we'll get a bit of money cons - the price we were quoted was low as it was based on age rather than mileage and condition; also if the ford breaks down we have a backup. option 2: sell the ford pros - the micra is in mint condition with much lower mileage cons - we will hardly get any money for it since it is old even if it runs fine; the micra is a bit small for our holiday with luggage and pets (though we could get around that) option 3: keep both but put the micra SORN pros - a backup if the ford dies; if I change jobs I might need a car again. cons - If I don't change jobs and try to sell it in a year it will be worth even less. I would be grateful for your advice.

My worry with having the Micra SORN is that it might get damaged not being used (I don't know enough about cars: is letting the engine run a few minutes per month while parked enough, along with having the battery unplugged?).

There are other threads on here about what to do if a car is 'laid up'. If you are talking about several months, you will need to think about tyres losing pressure and flat-spotting, for instance. As it's not under cover you must remember to remove all kinds of fallout from the exterior too, especially if it causes paint damage - and the interior could do with occasional ventilation.

I took delivery of a brand new Nissan Juke on 30 May. On 30 June and the car having 720 miles on the clock the RAC took the car back due to complete electrical failure. I was told they had no idea how long it would take to repair. Nissan said under the terms of their warranty they have 3 choices - to replace, to refund, or repair. They chose to repair and under the terms of their warranty they were allowed to take as long as it takes and they were under no legal obligation to pay me a penny in compensation. I have asked for a copy of the warranty on numerous occassions but haven't received it. The website refers you to Nissan for the small print.

On 14 September I wrote advising that I was fed up and not affirming the contract and if the car wasn't returned to me in a proper state by 25th September I wanted my money back. Nissan said I couldn't do this.... Read more

Did you get a decent courtesy car for the whole period, if you did then in a way you've had a nice little bonus of nigh on 4 months mileage and wear and tear not being added to your own car.

Recently had repair work on front bumper og car and am left with some paint overspray leaving a matt finish, what is best way to remove and get back to glossy finish. Would t-cut or perhaps a clay bar do it? Read more

Thanks for that. How long do I need to wait before using the clay bar, as the paint is still quite soft, only a few days old?

Hi,

I bought this old fiesta with no heater control valve in (someone had by-passed it with 2 bits of Alu tubing). I have since put new one in and replaced the resistor. Now I get hot air blowing when electrics disconnected from HCV and cold when connected but cannot bloomin' get variable heat.... Read more

The Bcm sits behind the glove box ,end of dashboard. It is not the same as the engine ecu, which is under the bonnet. You cannot swap out the Bcm for a s/hand unit ,as it contains the immobiliser info. The cycling Cdl system may be due to a faulty door lock actuator.

Hi my daughter will shortly be taking and, hopefully, passing her test. I am confused by the options of small 5 door cars available and would like to buy her a low insurance, low RFL, economical and reliable 07 reg.

As far as I can find, options are Citroen C1 and lookalikes, Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Matiz and a very few similar. Can anyone make any useful contibution to this discussion please?... Read more

Play with an insurance quote system. Low insurance group and small engine do not always equal the lowest insurance as they are popular with new drivers who statistically have more claims.
