Some engines do use oil some don't. I have two idenical diesel engines in a Peugeot 406 and a Citroen C5, the 406 has done 243,000 miles and uses no oil at all the C5 has only done 200k and often needs topping up.

It depends largely on how well the car has been looked after, particularly the frequency of oil changes.
