Chevrolet Matiz - What car to buy my daughter as a first transport - davewithabeard

Hi my daughter will shortly be taking and, hopefully, passing her test. I am confused by the options of small 5 door cars available and would like to buy her a low insurance, low RFL, economical and reliable 07 reg.

As far as I can find, options are Citroen C1 and lookalikes, Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Matiz and a very few similar. Can anyone make any useful contibution to this discussion please?

In anticipation, many thanks for all feedback

They're all very lightly built, especially the Matiz which wouldn't be on my list. A Yaris would be a bit more substantial than any of them and probably more reliable at that age. The 1.3 would be the best bet.

Of the models mentioned C1/Aygo/107 would be my choice as they are inherently more reliable. 2/3 Neighbour's kids have had them - slow which is great and generally they were problem free.

The Matiz is not a car I would consider. If you say how much your looking to spend I'm sure someone will be able to suggest the best car you can get for that price point.

How about a Skoda Fabia or Hyundai Getz ?

The Matiz is fine, actually quite reliable and very good mpg.

On the grounds the biggest running cost is going to be the insurance the C1 or i10 1.0 engines make the most sense.

Play with an insurance quote system. Low insurance group and small engine do not always equal the lowest insurance as they are popular with new drivers who statistically have more claims.

A friend's wife recently passed and he bought a Meriva 1.2 as insurance was sensible.

This is spot on advice, I know a young chap who bought a 2 litre Mondeo and it was cheaper to insure than a basic VW Polo.

These days every little aspect of the car is taken into account rather than the old days when a smaller engine equalled cheaper insurance.
