Hi there,
I've recently bought a 106 1.5D with 87k miles but no record of the cambelt being changed. I think it's worth having it changed but I'm looking to get your advice on what a sensible figure would be for having the cambelt and also the water pump changed. Are there any other components worth changing at the same time?

Thanks!

Unfortunately engine management diagnostics are often carried out by reading the fault codes that the cars ECU is telling us, So its very likely that your cars ECU did have a throttle pedal fault stored in its memory, and 9 times out of 10 we take it as read that this is the fault,

Unfortunatly if the cars ECU itself is faulty then it can often throw up all sorts of fault codes....

Has anyone else noticed that these days nearly all the cars are smart and seem to be lucky to see anything older than ten years old where as when i started driving in the mid nineties you would see cars with odd wings/ doors grey primer and oxide red paint around the wheel arches with thick black underseal along the sills i suppose the scrappage scheme killed a lot of and these days anyone seems to be able to get a car on finance Read more

When people see classic Morris Minors and Jaguar Mk 2's they fall into the trap of saying things like 'they don't make 'em like they used to' or 'things were built to last in those days' Yet those shining Morris Minors, Jags and suchlike at classic car shows are the lucky survivors, living memorials to the tens of thousands of their fellows that fell victim to rust before reaching their tenth birthdays.

I think it is a case of heavily rose tinted glasses. I most certainly wouldn't want to swap my current 15 year old car for the 12 year old car I had when I passed my driving test. It wasn't a bad car either for that time and was in good fettle but, I much prefer the smoother ride and fuel economy of more modern cars.

I've had this off the road for nearly 2 years, trying to sort out numerous faults. Thought I'd get the engine steam cleaned as there was an oil leak that the garage couldn't locate. I think this has been a big mistake.

I took it for an MOT and it boiled on the way, after fitting a new water pump, the car was missing on the way home., finally struggling in 1st gear. Next day car fired up and cut. Same garage came, plugged in computer and found various faults, diagnosing crankcase sensor. Fitted that, no joy, 2nd hand fuel pump, no joy, 2nd hand throttle body, still no joy. Off to auto electrician diagnosed ECU failure. After 2 attempts with another auto electrician installing and re programming ECU still no joy. Car will fire up and then just cuts out.... Read more

The fact that the car fires up and then cuts out, tends to suggest a problem with the immobilser system.Does the eml warning light flash when ignition switched on?

Baffled of Baldock

My car is now 3 months out of 3 year warranty and have just had to have a second new battery (the first one after 18 months on warranty). Mercedes refused any contribution although my dealer did give 10% on battery price. 18 month battery life seems outragously short to me. Anybody have similar experience? What would be my best action to get a decent contribution from MB.

Only larger Mercs like E Class and above have 2 batteries. C class only one.

Any advice on the below gratefully received.

Drove motor around 100 yards before coming to end of road. Turning right i heard a loud clunking noise before pulling over. Once over i left motor in neutral and heard a ticking/tapping sound, not overly noisy but persistent (sounded like a train, a double tap every 2-3 seconds). Had a look under the motor, nothing of any note, so drove back home where i could again hear the clunking sound. Arrived outside my house, the tapping noise was still there. As a test, i put the clutch down and the noise stopped. It started again as soon as i took my foot off the clutch.... Read more

If thats the going rate (£350), then i will just wave goodbye to it. Ive had it 3 years and only cost £750-ish so it doesnt really owe me much. Mind you, if i do scrap it, im smashing all the windows first as ive been burnt before when scrapping a motor (sold for £20 then saw said car up for sale a few days later for £300). Its a case of once bitter twice shy.

I have seen signs stating this on managed motorways. Something along the lines of 'heavy traffic, stay in lane'. Chopping lanes causes congestion and doesn't improve the situation for the impatient driver.
