Nissan Almera 03 - Noise from Engine when idling and turning - jamiem1976

Any advice on the below gratefully received.

Drove motor around 100 yards before coming to end of road. Turning right i heard a loud clunking noise before pulling over. Once over i left motor in neutral and heard a ticking/tapping sound, not overly noisy but persistent (sounded like a train, a double tap every 2-3 seconds). Had a look under the motor, nothing of any note, so drove back home where i could again hear the clunking sound. Arrived outside my house, the tapping noise was still there. As a test, i put the clutch down and the noise stopped. It started again as soon as i took my foot off the clutch.

So, im wondering if the two noises are related. I'm guessing they are as they happened at the same time. Anyone have any ideas what could possibly be the issue? Have tried to google it but not having much joy.

Many thanks in advance

Jim

Sounds like a gearbox fault, worn 1st motion shaft bearings perhaps??

By pressing the clutch you are isolating the gearbox completely from the crankshaft, while the clutch pedal is up the 1st motion shaft is engaged and turning with the crankshaft/engine.

Time to rebuild the gearbox or..get rid.

Hmmmm. sounds like an expensive and time consuming task. Ideas on cost? If its too dear will scrap it, didnt cost a lot and probably is on its way out.

Our gearbox guy charges us £350 to strip and rebuild a manual g'box with new bearings (On average) but we still have to remove and refit said gearbox.

you might be able to find a 2nd hand box, but either way your probably outweighing the value of the car.

If you plan on keeping it for as long as possible then it might be worth just checking its actually got oil in it..

I heard some of these gearboxes were underfilled from new, resulting in premature failure.

Some folk don't bother replacing the lost oil when removing drive shafts.

If thats the going rate (£350), then i will just wave goodbye to it. Ive had it 3 years and only cost £750-ish so it doesnt really owe me much. Mind you, if i do scrap it, im smashing all the windows first as ive been burnt before when scrapping a motor (sold for £20 then saw said car up for sale a few days later for £300). Its a case of once bitter twice shy.
