Air con has stopped working, what are the first things to check??? Read more

First of all you need to be sure that the clutch is actually engaging. Look at the compressor with the a/c switched on and check that the clutch plate engages and spins, then disengages and then engages again.

If it doesn't and you want to check that the compressor functions, then you could short the low level switch on the drier and see if it engages now. If you suspect it's low on gas then only switch on for enough time to check it engages so that you don't damage the compressor. If the condenser is the original then I suspect it's rusted away and the gas has leaked out....

Ok, so my C-Max has quite a few issues ...

One of them which will cause some grief one day is the fact that the reversing lights don't come on when selecting reverse gear. Apart from this the rear lights work fine. Its not the reversing light bulbs either as I have replaced these.... Read more

Hi Lucy,

Friend of mine had an accident in her own vehicle. Not her fault. While in the repairers, her insurance company lent her a vehicle through a hire company.... Read more

The chances are that - as if it had been her own car - she must pay to rectify the damage or claim on the insurance policy and hence incur the excess.

The only possible other claim is against the (unknown) person causing the damage.

Hi,

hope someone can give me some advice. I bought a 2005 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130, 75k with full Ford history at the weekend. I've done 380 miles cruising on the motorway and then today it suddenly lost power but would still just about maintain speed (unless uphill). The temperature guage dropped to zero as well. The loss of torque made me think a blown Turbo straight away as it was barely driveable so I limped it the last 5 miles home.... Read more

Hello.

My wife recently purchased a run about for work and the dipped and rear lights are constantly on in dipped mode when she puts the ignition on.

They switch off as soon as she turns the ignition off, so it's not draining the battery (yet) but I would love to know if there is a way to put it back to 'normal'.

The rear wiper doesn't seem to work either but the rear washer jet does ( I understand they are on the same pin on the copper boot connector pins). I don't know if this is a probable cause of the lighting issue, but thought I would mention it just in case.

Thanks in advance

She says she doesn't know if the heated rear window works as yet.

I won't get to do any investigations until the weekend now because of the early/dark nights (no garage)....

I would ask them specifically if its aftermarket or genuine .

If its aftermarket could just be a rouge batch and your looking for a problem that isn't there! so common with aftermarket parts....

PLEASE HELP!

My Octy has got a noise when accelerating between 1800-2300 rpm. It only occurs when moving and not stationary. Two local specialists and a dealer (Silbury, Northumberland) and say it is an induction noise. Unfortunately none have suggested a cause or a cure. The air intake unit and pipe located on front grill, and air filter box have all been changed and still noise is there. The air pipes have been removed up to Air Flow meter and the under car engine cover have been removed to eliminate them, car, driven and again noise is still audible. It has been suggested the intercooler but the car certainly doesnt suffer lack of power, a bit of smoke under harsh acceleration but not under normal conditions. Clutch was recently changed to SMF not affected noise. Read more

Engine/exhaust heat shield or maybe exhaust baffles.

Hello - Recently had my latest in whole string of V70s written off in accident and decided to try the xc model, 2001 Yreg, 98k, good history and condition. Bearing type noise from rear, not power on/off dependant and suspect diff as evidence of oil leak from front of diff. Topped up oil, but no real improvement in noise and leakage increased. Quoted locally 4 hours labour and £1200 for new diff, which is obviously out of the question for this age of car, can you recommend a good company to remove/rebuild/refit, or exchange swop? Based in Slough/High Wycombe area.

All tyres good and new condition.

Also, auto box fluid not as clean as I like so will change myself ( I usually do all but major items myself). Handbook says 'absolutely nothing but Volvo fluid' but is this true or a marketing ploy for their branded, expensive fluid? Surely, a suitable dexron rated alternative is acceptable?

Many thanks,

Hello again - Gibbons method is indeed still there on volvoXC.com and appears very similar to the earlier process I mentioned. Trying it out shortly.
