my engine management light came on last week the car has been running fine no probs although it has been well over due its service, i took it to a friend to run the diagnostic to avoid the main dealer price he said that the code showed it might need a lambda sensor but might just be it needs a really good service.... so i took it to my dealer for it well needed service and MOT they said if it was the lambda sensor it would fail its MOT but it passed could it have been just in need of a good service the engine management light is still on but will that just need turning off now????

Also im quite concerned about the timing chains on the micras iv had one before and it stretched at 40k miles, i got 28k on this one and am concerned about this one stretching is it something that is checked to prevent it stretching or should it be changed at a certain mileage?????? Read more

Micra timing chains need clean oil. Not servicing it on time means dirty oil...

When I see a lot of the problems people ask about in the forum, I sometimes wonder if everybody here wrote or e-mailed to the manufacturers about what a lousy car this is for electricals or whatever, surely mass opinion will do something. No vehicle manufacturer can ignore the power of mass communications nowadays. From when I started driving in the 1970's car reliability was 1970's car reliability, but I have just bought a 2009 car for £7000 instead of its RRP price of £16000 aginst a new car that was £12000 in 1992 (new to new prices) Bigger depreciation now on the korean, but far better equipped and also far better fuel economy than the honda engined rover from 1992.

On the web forum I have found lots of good information on Dual mass flywheels, Particulate filters and driving style with both of these things on the car. What I never was asked at the dealer was whar would the car be used for!... Read more

Hi All

I have just bought a 2006 Mondeo ST TDCI, the rear parking control does not work, nothing is sounded, no beeps or tones when going into reverse, the reverse lights do come one though. I suspect it could be the control module but having looked behind the trim in the boot cannot find the module... Read more

Thanks for the reply, do you know of any diagrams or what the wiring should look like, from what I could see everything was connected ok, if it's the speaker, could I replace it with any PDC speaker?

Cheers

Like everywhere else,my village is covered with snow.I was driving up the hill this morning and when my car was getting stuck in the snow, there was a continuous clicking/ratcheting sound coming from thefront and the car wasn't moving forward. What would this sound be.The car is fitted with Traction Control and ESP plus.Is it anything to do with these?Any help would be much appreciated as I am afraid I have damaged something although once I got unstuck, the car seems to drive o.k. Sounds like the esp/abs system cutting in and out.Perfectly normal. My mondeo does the same. You may find it a benefit to switch off the esp system in deep snow to enable you to "rock" the car out of snow.hth

Thanks very much for your reply. It's good to know this is normal and not something wrong with my car.I'll switch off esp and traction control going up the hill until I'm on the main road....

Can anybody help me? I have a 2001 mondeo tddi when the fuel gets to quarter of a tank of diesel it starts to cut out and the glowplug light flashes put more fuel in and it was ok thought it was the lift pump so put a new one on but still the same problem.

I bought a 1943 ex French Army Willys Jeep 3 years ago and it came with instructions to add 2-stroke oil and lead replacement additive to each tank of fuel. Having driven it back to the UK from the Alps and renovated various parts I found there was differing advice as to the necessity of these additions. My question is therefore is it necessary to add 2-stroke oil at all or will RedEx do the same thing? Is lead replacement addive of any use, I have just replaced all the valves and springs in the engine and found that the valve seats are all OK but required quite a bit of grinding in because of the coating of lead on the seats. A plaque discovered beneath layers of paint on the engine denotes that the engine was re-built in 1960. It is an original Willys Go-Devil side valve engine.

There may also be a problem with these old vehicles and the use of ethanol in petrol vis a vis corrosion of some parts, are there any additives which will counteract the acidity of the ethanol?... Read more

Re Willys side valve Jeep engine-the reason that upper cylinder lubricant (UCL) such as Redex was a recommended additive for side valve motors was that because the valve guides, tappets, camfollowers and camshaft are below the valves the inlet valve stems tended to run dry. Old engines like these with a compression ratio of about 5.5- 6.0/1 are unlikely to need lead replacement additives because the valves and seats run a lot cooler and the valves don't erode the seats like modern engines. Watch out or rather listen out for pinking though,tetra-ethyl lead was a well known anti-knock additive.

Hello all - I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this...
We bought my son a car last week from a "part time" car dealer - 600 quid, ran ok on test drive and seemed ok for the money. Needs some new tyres & brake pads which we knew about however, in the week since we bought it, the radiator failed, we took that on the chin so to speak and its been fixed, then one of the rear light clusters failed as there's water in there. And last night after hearing a knocking/banging sound the front wheel has wobbled almost off - thank goodness my son was only driving at 25 MPH as it was cold and icy last night he managed to get it to the side of the road and no one was hurt. As his mum I am furious that this bloke has sold us a potential death trap, however, I do reasonably see that it's entirely possible that it's something the seller may not have known about - we are not sure where we stand legally - do we simply ask for our money back, ask for a portion of it back to cover the necessary works or what - one of my main concerns is that if he is selling lots of dodgy old bangers onto first time drivers there's a very real danger of someone being hurt.

Anyway, what do you think? Thanks so much for reading! Read more

True pd. Last time I traded in an old car for £500 it appeared in Autotrader a week later on someone's driveway for £1,500. And that was about 6 years ago.

For a car to be going for just £600 from a dealer (whether from their driveway or a forecourt), I'd be surprised if it even starts and moves under its own power.
