Hi everyone,
Just noticed some scumbags nicked my Aerial Mast from my Focus, So looks like a trip to Bristol St Motors on Saturday to buy a new one, Iwas wondering if anyones has been successful and found anything ( Like Araldite or Loctite) to stop the thieving little pink fluffy dice {a member of some 3 yrs and you don't know about the no swearing policy?}
nicking the new one?? Hoping for some ideas..... Cheers Bigmacca. Read more
The local Tesco has been re-developed recently and now the entrance road to the filling station is only wide enough for one vehicle.
I always wait when I get to the front of the queue (i.e.the end of the entrance road) until the first available pump becomes free, as unlike a lot of other drivers, I do actually have the mental capacity to park the car such that the hose will reach from the "wrong" side!!!
I have probably had to make this "wait" half a dozen times of late as this station is very busy, (probably due to the 5p a litre discount offer). Each and every time I have been hassled by at least one of those behind me, to drive into a queue at a particular pump, (which I always ignore). I find the worst offenders to be taxi drivers, one of which I had a real go at the last time this happened.
What's wrong with these people, they seem to have no sense that I'm not actually holding them up in my quest to also get served as quickly as possible? Read more
This has been one of the best threads for a while. Amazing branches off and then suddenly back on track. My normal fill is Tesco, Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham. Little or no queing space and its on the way into the store, so on occassions the queue snakes back onto the main road and non-fuel shoppers can't get into the store - very poor design. I use Pay at Pump, except when I have the 5p off voucher - and queues are more frequent during such promotions. I too tend to fill up at quieter times, like Sunday evening after dropping a youngster off at friends before heading south for a working week 300 miles away.
Asda in Luton is staff-less, but when its windy they don't dispense receipts, but staff will write one for you inside the store!!
The queing schemes in post offices and at longer self-service tills in supermarkets work well, and car queing would work in the same way IF there was space. But generally x8 cars takes up a long length, so good practice is to form a series of small queues where some will be quicker and some slower. (and yes as a sad-o I have studied such things in "Lean Thinking" see Nissan and Toyta manufacturing, but at least it did help to bring down long waits for the NHS - long story, dont ask)
I also use petrol price checker, but 1-2p difference and an extra 20miles isn't worth it..
For legal reasons need a forensic examination on the engine of a Volvo S60 to establish how and why the idler pulley seized. How shall I go about it? Any forensic expert in or around Guildford?

I think what you want is a 'motor vehicle consultant engineer'. You will may find these people can help : - www.ace-uk.org/
I have no connection to them, just googled the phrase above. I have used Strange, Strange & Partners from Manchester many years ago and they were very good. They travel around the country.
I have a-new-to-me automatic cabriolet, which judders at low speeds when turning right, sometimes it seems as if the car is not going to make the turn at all.
Am i looking at a power steering problem?
The reservoir is full, if so could it be the pump?
Any advice greatly recieved - Mark Read more
First thing to check is the pump drive belt tension, sounds as though it might be slipping
Im working on a dw8 engined partner van, 54 plated. It has been brought to me for a new engine as it ws knocking. However its only knocking when cold. There was no unusual diesel smoke etc when cold. I have been looking about and found a few instances of people complaining about this and it being the cold start advance relay? Maybe Im being stupid and missing something but this van is on a cable operated delphi pump with mechanical injectors and is belt driven. That being the case should it not be all mechanical and therefore not be a relay controlling the advance or am I missing something? It is an absolute pig to start from cold but when warm its absolutley spot on. The glowplugs are doing their job and the van pulls as well as an asthamtic diesel should so I dont suspect any engine fault. Do these use a wax stat for cold start enrichment like the older XUD engine? Could that be an issue? Read more
sorry my bad, it starts spot on all the time. The customer told me it was bad at cold but its not, it just knocks. The knock is kind of on and off as well. Ive now established its the advance unit on the pump failing. I am reccomending a new unit as well as a major service and new belt etc as it all looks a little tired.
I've a couple of spare wheels I want to fit some tyres to for off-road use (autotesting and trialling). They're 4.5J.
I'll be fitting inner tubes because I'll be down to around 10PSI on occasions.
I'm getting conflicting information from local tyre fitters. They all seem to think they'll take 155s OK, but one reckoned I could get 165s on.
I'll be getting a fellow club member to fit them by hand.
Any tyre experts here who can advise please?
I'm looking at either 155/80x13 or 165/70x13. Read more
>>But do you think I can muscle 165s onto a 4.5J rim?

I have a severe intermittent problem, with my 1.6 gti 1991. I know 100% that it is a problem with the cables(loom) that connect to the fuse box,, the problems is every now and again the fuel pump will cut out, i have had the car specialists in to look at it, since being told to replace the fuse box, fuel pump relay and ecu, the problem still persists, when the engine cuts out i proceed to 'wiggle' the fuse box itself whilst coasting down the road, and the majority of the time, this caues the fuel pump to start working, this fault must be caused by a loose or faulty connector on the loom, ofcourse i have no idea which connecter that connects with the fuse box does what! if anyone could help me with this problem i would greatly appreciate it!
im off to start replacing various connectors, even though the idea of cutting connectors of the standard and existing loom makes me feel sick to my stomache! Read more
I notice that the window on the driver's side comes up damp when it has been down for a short while. None of the others do. I suspect the door drains are obstructed and there is condensation in the door cavity. Has anyone come across this and do they have any advice to share? Read more
Can't recall this ever happening to my previous 53 reg and current 06 reg Vectra-C.
Have you looked at the drains at the bottom of the door to see if they're blocked, or tried pouring water down the window from outside to see if it drains out the bottom of the doors?
Another thought, is the rubber seal on the drivers door actually in contact with the glass and acting as a squeegee like it is with the 3 other doors?
