hi, i have a 2005 ex royal mail 1.3cdti combo van for some reason the no.1 high pressure injector pipe from the common rail keeps breaking near the common rail side just at the swollen end , a hair line fracture to be more pecise ,but enough to stop the engine running this is the third time it has happened , i have checked common rail mountings ,they seem okay , so it would not seem to be a vibration problem , any help would be appreciated i am getting desperate Read more
Been pondering this for several weeks. An old & respected friend sat in my new Octavia after I'd sat in his new BMW. He said that he would not be able to drive my car safely , as he could not reach the brake pedal without lifting his foot off the floor. The brake pedal is indeed a couple of inches above the accelerator even at rest. In the BMW you just slide across to the brake pedal , keeping your heel on the carpet.
I remember Motor magazine commenting on such a problem in the 1970s and a 'cure' was to build the accelerator pedal up with a wooden block.
I've never really noticed the problem, but there must be a time delay in going from one pedal to another. Similar set up to all the VWs I 've owned.

When new to this site I asked GWS politely where he got the name. I
seem to remember his grandmother used to call him it (affectionately I'm sure). It does
indeed translate roughly as 'silly little brute'.
I would translate it at "dopey little disgusting person" myself...
No offence, GWS :-)

How's your dad doing now Rattle, is he out & on the mend ok?
There are a few Azure 640A's on ebay @ the mo.
So NAD is made in PRC, well blow me down with a wet woodbine!
At least Arcam are made here still (I think)
Re: Hyundia, I well remember the Stellar & Pony from the 80's :( but they've learnt the game now like the Jap's did in the 70's = 1st they copy, and then they improve on the original ... I wonder where that leaves the Chinese MG when it comes over and is eventually made here, Chinese, MG, doesn't have quite the same ring to it somehow.
90% of our cars have been used and good value buys. Never ever though of PCP but reading the Mini PCP thread and looking at Ling's webside has made me realise it could suit our situation for the next three years. Even more so as I love the new Citroen C5 and they are very cheap on contract.
Could dive in and arrange tomorrow but wondered what the trend might be in rates over the next 3-6mths? I've never followed PCP rates to know how they fluctuate over the time of year and in the longer term related to car prices/residuals/etc. Wonder too if the C5 would follow a normanl trend or might have its own pricing foibles.
I must say I get the Ling way of operating and would happily deal with her organisation rather than a straight faced desk/phone jockey. Read more
Just for info the rates have gone up already. In the 2wks since the C5 was delivered the monthly rate for new contracts has risen by £35. £7 of that is the increase in VAT on payments, the rest an increase in the contract itself. Might not seem much but it's £1064 over and above the vat rate rise for the 3yr term.
Seems we got in about right.
I bought a car from a leading auction house on Friday. When I got home I noticed that the registration number on the MoT does not match the registration number of the car. It looks as though the car previously held a cherished plate and it is this number on the MoT.
Have I any recourse against the auction house given that the car does not have actually have a valid MoT as stated on the auction house windscreen ticket and on my invoice.
Greatly appreciate any advice re: whether I can return the car for a refund under their indemnity scheme or if I am able to claim compensation.
Many thanks in advance. Read more
snip - see site policy on name and shame - PU Mod frankly. They're bad enough when you buy hundreds from them per year (although if they know you it is surprising what can be done) but they really don't care about an individual who might buy one car every 4 years from them. They are a large duopoly and behave accordingly.
Your only argument is that the car was advertised with a V5 and hasn't technically got one.
You have to remember that auctions are wholesale places and most times something like this happens it will be with a trader who has bought 10 other cars on the day so will just put the one which hasn't got a V5 to the back of the queue to be processed for sale. The auctions and the auction house staff are really not used to dealing in any sort of "retail" environment with the general public.
As far as legal advice is concerned you need to be sure that whoever you take advice from is familiar with auction law as it is different to any sort of other point of sale law.
Personally, I'd put it down to experience however annoying it is. You might be technically correct but the auction house will have a bigger legal department and a much larger budget than you so you'd need to be damn sure of winning if it got into a legal case.
I have been looking at a 1998 A3 1.6 petrol with 138K on the clock.
The car is in excellent condition and drives well and also comes with a full service history.
It is quite well priced but I could buy a 51 plate focus Zetec for a similar price but there is no comparison with the build quality.
I assume that the down side of purchasing the Audi will be the cost of spares and repairs and probably the insurance. Can anyone tell me about the fuel consumption and are there any other known problems that may occur with an A3 of this age and mileage.

Thanks for the advice, I am new to the site, much appreciated, as you say, Lots of info there, Cheers
Hi both my power steering belt and the 'other' one (not sue if it cam belt , fan belt, alternator belt!!!!!! I'm sure you know which one it is :S) have both snapped! I have purchased the belts from halfords but just need some advice on how to actually change them please! I have a haynes manual but its too technical for me! :( So if anyone can translate into easier terms please that will be brilliant!
Thanks in advance,

Haynes says you have to remove the power steering belt to change the alternator belt. Therefore the alternator will be the inner belt. HTH.
I put my old Volvo in the scrappage scheme some 3 months ago and I now note that it's reg' number is listed on the MID as being on a Honda CB500. Any thoughts?
MD Read more
So that does seem to show scrapped as far as DVLA are concerned and the MID showing Honda is an error.
Seems my Focus CC3 is holding its price much better than I could have expected.
Similar cars to mine are on Autotrader for a bit more than I paid last March.
Even the Glass's link on the Vauxhall website only shows a trade price loss of about £1,000.
New cars are supposed to depreciate at an alarming rate, so it's little short of amazing mine is still worth anywhere near what I paid for it.
Or is it?
One of the Back Room's resident traders mentioned increased used prices recently.
Perhaps credit crunch and scrappage has distorted the market.
Maybe CC3s in Blue di Cina are ultra-desirable. :)
Or have all new cars sold in the last year held their value?
If you have a 58 or 09-reg, how do you think it's performed value-wise?

What you missed in your comprehensive treatise was the fact the UK pricing for euro
made cars was lagging the exchange rate by about 9-12 months.
Hence my decision to buy new in December 2008 - I could see what was
likely to happen to UK car list prices.
Good point although we hadn't decided to change SWMBO's car at that point, our original plan was to keep it much longer but SWMBO has tired of the hard ride and poor rear visibility of the Civic, after time these outweighed its undoubted other merits (2.2 CTDi engine for instance).
I also think that the 'price to change' has possibly not widened by much in that time either, I think we might be getting as much as £1500 more for the Civic now than we'd have got in late 2008 but I can't say for sure as we didn't explore the option at the time.
The market is (academically) interesting, exchange rates are only one factor - old fashioned economics like demand curves set the selling prices of cars, manufacturers have to balance their fixed costs with volumes, profitability and selling price, as I said, I think a major change is happening.
As for exchange rates, the delays will have been a combination of hedging and perhaps distributors /manufacturers hoping that major trends were just transient blips ?
