Audi 1.9Tdi PD AWX. Been driven gently for 122K. The symptoms the owner reports sounds like the turbo vanes may be sticking. I have heard of cleaners that can be added. Can anyone recommend any of these although I find it difficult to image how, after combustion, there can be something other then hot gases and soot that could effect the turbo. Regards Peter

In America they have been cleaning VVT's for some years using oven cleaner spray. I understand they remove the exhaust down pipe & fill up the turbo with some foaming oven cleanet. How effective it is is difficult to say but they seem to have a very good sucess rate according to the forums.

No, not VED, but the tax that got added to VAT when that was introduced and was necessary to make up the shortfall after purchase tax.

I assume it still exists, but can anyone confirm? Googling just produces references to other sorts of taxation, but I can't imagine it's been dropped. Has it had a name change and is it still around 10%? Read more

That might explain why I thought it still existed. I'm sure I'd have noticed if prices had gone down! Good to see that the ratchet principle is still alive and well...

BTW, do you think if I found an old VW 411 (which had a separate, petrol-fired heater) it would qualify for both car and boiler scrappage?

Hello everybody,

I've just got a new job in Surrey and it's going to involve a fair bit of driving so I need to get myself a car. I've never owned my own car before, always been driving my parents' cars sp i want to get something that is going to be suitable for me. The thing is I know very little about cars... I've got a budget between £3k and £5k.

As it will only really be for myself and my girlfriend it doesn't have to be too big however, I am 6'3 and do suffer from lower back pain so I do really want a car that is going to be comfortable for me to drive - I'm thinking about driving around Europe next summer as well and unless I have a car that is comfortable enough I don't think it will be possible.

I'm also up for having reasonable fuel economy. I'll give you a list of the cars I've been looking at so far so any comments on them with regards to what I'm looking for would be much appreciated, particularly if any tall drivers have experience with these cars. My dad has a Ford Focus which I have never had a problem with but I'd ideally like something a bit smaller. I'm not too fussed diesel or petrol.

Here's what I've found:

Golf 1.6 S FSI 52,000m 3dr £4,500 and a 5 dr for £5,250

Peugeot 207 Hatchback, 1.4 HDi S 5d 2007/07 £4,700 - now I think this one is a very good price although the ad doesn't give the mileage. I know it's not a very powerful car but it boasts 62mpg.

Peugeot 307 1.6 S 5dr Auto -- 2006 '56' 30,000m £4,780

Vauxhall Astra Hatchback, 1.6 Club 5d 18,000 2004/54 £3,995

Renault Clio Hatchback, 1.4 16V Privilege 5d 46,483 2006/56 £4,848

Ford Focus Hatchback, 1.8 TDCi Edge 3d 2005 £3,989

Citroën C4 Hatchback, 1.6i 16V Cool 5d 15,513 2006/56 £4,995

Vauxhall Astra Hatchback, 1.6 SXi 5d 2004/04 54,824 £3,741

At the moment I'm in Guildford and I don't have transport so I'm basically stuck with doing internet based research right now - once I've narrowed it down a bit I'll find a dealership where I can maybe test drive some of the cars.

Any questions just ask, advice much appreciated.

Cheers,

Rob

Volvo S60. Extremely comfortable, and affordable if a little older. Heated seats are a boon for back pain, too.

£5k should get you a nice 04 D5 or a more recent T5 or 2.4 petrol.

Best of luck,

Alex.

I have a Colt and looking at getting it serviced. The dealer I got it from is messing me aroudn and quoted me £290 for a service but can't tell me what needs done for it? They can't even agree if it's a major or a minor service.
SO... I'm looking at having a local independent garage do the work but struggling to find one. Because it's a Mitsu I can't find any local specialists and the mechanic I normally use isn't VAT registered which I would need for the warranty.
I phoned around a couple and was given wildly varying prices from £150 to £220+Vat
I am likely to have a warranty claim for rust on the car (it's not even 3 yet!!!) so want to keep myself right, but can't get the dealer to get his backsied in gear to sort this and have called Mitsu and had the same attitutde :(
Can anyone recommend a garage in the Glasgow area that WILL do the work req'd and will use quality parts? I had one who said he would but that he wouldn;t keep receipts but could provide an invoice number for Mitsu if need be. Kinda suspicious of this, but he did soudn like he knew his stuff, as I phoned others who were really vague. I got his name from the good garage scheme which I know is a bit dubious but his site seems ok and they sounded quite professional.
Sorry to blab on but been ripped off so many times by garages and would be good just to get a decent one I can rely on... Read more

3yrs servicing for £225, and if you check the terms and conditions it should still be available to you I think.

Those regulars with good memories may remember my report of the first 90k miles in my Mk5 Golf 1.9Tdi, which had been almost trouble free:
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=58085&...f

Well, it's now done 136k so I thought I post an update; as you will see, there has been a bit more to report, Good, Bad and Ugly...

The Ugly:
At 103k, whilst trundling along on a Sunday afternoon on a downhill section of the M4 at an indicated 70mph, I became aware that there was no longer any power ? no noise, no warning lights, no smoke, just... no power. Hopes that it was only a fuse disappeared on the hard shoulder when opening the bonnet revealed a small, but definite, trace of oil blown from under the filler cap. No way was it going to start. After an, er, interesting, tow down the motorway, it was eventually delivered into the hands of a VW garage, who promptly diagnosed a failed turbo (they disconnected the input and output air hoses and it started immediately). Thankfully it was still under lease, however circumstances meant that I never got to speak directly with the people involved in its repair. Having spoken to various other people subsequently, I have come to believe that it wasn't a case of bearing failure, but that the turbo had jammed, a not unknown occurance (although there are 2 differing theories, namely: blade fracture due to a manufacturing issue, or ingress of particles due to poor (wastegate?) design).

The Bad:
Radiator had to be replaced at 120k ? that was not cheap; apparently the front of the car has to be dismantled...
The spare wheel well was awash after the recent downpours; a resealed boot vent (seemingly a known issue) has almost stopped water ingress, but there seems to be another (albeit, small) leak somewhere else at the back (not the MkIV washer problem!!).
I bought it from the Leasing company at 113k, so bills are mine now...

The Good:
It still looks and feels fresh ? no creaks, seats still comfy and unworn, no hole in driver's mat.
I have no desire to change it.
A year ago I had the use of a hire Astra (1.6) petrol, which I didn't like at all, and a 1.8 Focus diesel; I could have lived with that, although there was no way of dimming the panel lights from their stun setting - I couldn't believe it... The supposed wonderful Focus handling seemed no better than the Golf in everyday sensible use (which is why I like HJ and Martin's tests for real life observations ? you cannot Clarkson/Needell/Plato your way around these days), though the one time I hurled it at a clear roundabout, I have to admit, it did go round well...

The Other Interesting Info/Misc Observations:

NSR OE Conti 3 replaced at 103k as it was worn on outside shoulder; typically, its replacement picked up a nail 17k miles later and was scrapped.... OSR OE Conti3 replaced at 121k after I got fed up checking it, although it still had 3mm.

To recap, Fronts: OE lasted 43k, replacement Conti lasted 29k.
Following Michelins lasted 43k, which I replaced with Dunlop FastResponses, as these had better wet grip (and were fairly quiet) in the ADAC/Which tests. Big mistake ? fuel consumption dropped immediately by 4-5mpg. Anorak on, and checking brim to brim figures, the last 24k miles on the Michelins were at 51.3mpg, the following 19k miles on the Dunlops were 49.1mpg, despite driving more like a mimser to compensate.

OE headlight bulbs changed (easily) at 114k, one tail-light bulb also changed (had to unbolt the lamp unit).

Front and rear pads (not disks) changed at 107k.

Bonnet some times difficult to latch shut ? colleague told me that AA/RAC man gave him the tip for a roadside cure to dribble oil from the dipstick into the mechanism...

Got a pair of Atera roof bars for the topbox ? although model specific, I will go back to Thule the next time (thanks to roofbox.co.uk for their assistance last year, last Sat before Christmas).
Also, I'd happily recommend VW Bath and Mon Motors Chippenham for their VAG service (no connection to any of the aforementioned companies).

Mine has no exterior aerial, though I have seen later Golfs with bee-sting (but no sat-nav bulge).

I cannot understand why magazines are so enthusiastic about the MK6 interior over the MK5. As far as I can see, MK6 only have some piano black and some extra ali (which later Mk5s had anyway), yet still have the Mk5 B pillar mouldings, which are mismatched to the MK6 front door panels...

Anyway, to sum up, I don't want to change it, I still enjoy driving it (unlike Pologirl's, it doesn't have a name!). I was planning to run it into the ground (my old company Passat Tdi has now turned 200k+) but the esp issue and the small leak are playing on my mind. But what could I change to? However that should be the subject of separate posting....

Anyone out there ever replaced the front lower wishbones? It's a 2003 1.9TDi 130/PD (ASV engine). Just successfully passed it's MoT (62,000 miles) but got a 'cautionary' for wear on the rear bushes in the front wishbones. Recently replaced same on a Mk3 Astra (with a lot of very useful help from this forum!!) and I'm assuming I can get wishbones complete with front and rear bushes and lower ball-joints already fitted (as for the Astra). If anyone has done this on the Octavia I would welcome any advice e.g. any particular difficulties/things to watch out for? Special tools etc needed? Grateful for any advice! Read more

The local Tesco has been re-developed recently and now the entrance road to the filling station is only wide enough for one vehicle.

I always wait when I get to the front of the queue (i.e.the end of the entrance road) until the first available pump becomes free, as unlike a lot of other drivers, I do actually have the mental capacity to park the car such that the hose will reach from the "wrong" side!!!

I have probably had to make this "wait" half a dozen times of late as this station is very busy, (probably due to the 5p a litre discount offer). Each and every time I have been hassled by at least one of those behind me, to drive into a queue at a particular pump, (which I always ignore). I find the worst offenders to be taxi drivers, one of which I had a real go at the last time this happened.

What's wrong with these people, they seem to have no sense that I'm not actually holding them up in my quest to also get served as quickly as possible? Read more

This has been one of the best threads for a while. Amazing branches off and then suddenly back on track. My normal fill is Tesco, Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham. Little or no queing space and its on the way into the store, so on occassions the queue snakes back onto the main road and non-fuel shoppers can't get into the store - very poor design. I use Pay at Pump, except when I have the 5p off voucher - and queues are more frequent during such promotions. I too tend to fill up at quieter times, like Sunday evening after dropping a youngster off at friends before heading south for a working week 300 miles away.
Asda in Luton is staff-less, but when its windy they don't dispense receipts, but staff will write one for you inside the store!!
The queing schemes in post offices and at longer self-service tills in supermarkets work well, and car queing would work in the same way IF there was space. But generally x8 cars takes up a long length, so good practice is to form a series of small queues where some will be quicker and some slower. (and yes as a sad-o I have studied such things in "Lean Thinking" see Nissan and Toyta manufacturing, but at least it did help to bring down long waits for the NHS - long story, dont ask)

I also use petrol price checker, but 1-2p difference and an extra 20miles isn't worth it..
