02 1.9 Suspect Sticking turbo vane - Peter D
Audi 1.9Tdi PD AWX. Been driven gently for 122K. The symptoms the owner reports sounds like the turbo vanes may be sticking. I have heard of cleaners that can be added. Can anyone recommend any of these although I find it difficult to image how, after combustion, there can be something other then hot gases and soot that could effect the turbo. Regards Peter

I don't think you will have any success with any cleaners.
The particles have worked their way, over thousands of miles, into the void where the vane machanism is located & will probably be cloging it up.
If you remove the vacuum pipe from the vane controlling capsule on the turbo while the engine is running, the vane rod should move by about 15mm if the mechanism isn't clogged up.
Here is a link showing how the system works & how to clean out the mech.

In America they have been cleaning VVT's for some years using oven cleaner spray. I understand they remove the exhaust down pipe & fill up the turbo with some foaming oven cleanet. How effective it is is difficult to say but they seem to have a very good sucess rate according to the forums.
