Mileage between 50,000 to 100,000 (not too worried about mileage as vehicle will only cover 2000 miles a year); A&B roads and occassional Motorway trip, has to carry items to tip and be able to cope with snowy conditions.

I've always been a bit of, anticipation driving, by the book and occasional engine braking on long downhill stretches. With my current car, a Mondeo Mk4 Diesel Auto, I thought I would have to give up the downhill engine braking bit but this electronic box is so clever it automatically holds on to the gears going downhill without kicking down.

Not sure how much interest on here, but here are the latest images of the new Alfa Giulietta. Engines at launch will be a 1.6 Multijet diesel (105BHP I believe) and a 2.0 Multijet diesel (170BHP). 3 petrol engines,2x 1.4Turbos with 140BHP and 170BHP (the latter with multiair). The range topper will be a 1.75 turbo petrol with 235BHP and will be called "cloverleaf". I think it looks good. Read more

Thanks for that PR(P). This car seems to have taken an eternity to make its debut.

My brother is considering getting a car after about 8 years. Obviously he has 0 NCD but he drives a van for work.

He has tried the comparison websites but they come up with high prices. My only suggestion was that a local insurance broker might be more help, might treat him the same as an ex company car driver?

Any other ideas on this?

Bought my company car in the summer after 7 years of business driving. Letter from broker for my employer's fleet cover stating no accidents - sorted.

hi
son has a 57 plate peugeot 407 coupe 2.0 diesel, the same engine i believe has in my 2.0 ford focus, 58 plate. my focus has a pre-heater which when outside temp is at a certain low temp, setting the temp control to max the pre-heater activates. not sure what that actually entails, i.e. i don't think the engine warms up any quicker but i think it works on the interior heater. so on driving first thing on a icy morning the car interior heats up quicker.
does anyone know if the 407 has a similar setup as i cannot find any info on it in the owners manual.
thanks Read more

Why not use the train to get to your destination? the roads are crowded roadworks hold us up for hours or it seems like it, stress sets in on the road "let the train take the strain"

How often do you use the railways instead of the car?

A nice comfy carrage nice and warm always on time never late unless of little problems do arise from time to time.

Want to go shopping but car parks are full & expensive hop on the train cheaper than a taxi and nicer than the bus, would you? Read more

But instead I'm first and still waiting for
the others - traffic chaos around Reading thanks to a fresh snowfall.

Eventually had to drive/slide across Reading at abput 11pm to pick up SWMBO from a hotel near where she had to abandon her car. Journey there not too bad, but very slow coming back, and eventually got in after midnight. She had left Daventry at 3pm.

Then had to get up at 6:15 this morning to run the 5 miles back to pick up car before it got clamped (a threat made by security guard last night). Quite a nice run in the snow actually, and drive back relatively uneventful.

Picture of our road taken after getting back last night (still snowing):

Last `snow event` - (sorry watching too much TV news) I pushed a very young couple out of a road end, by putting my shoulder behind the car. (I was doddering along holding a newspaper - then asked them if they wanted a shove - to wide open mouths - shocked at the offer)
The young woman in the passenger seat had an absolutely incredulous look on her face as I waved them off.
That`s what you get I suppose when you are quite old and frail looking, even to yourself, with a long white beard.
A nice `comeback` though, from when that young bloke a couple of years ago offered to help me change a wheel.. You look at yourself in a mirror after an event like that.

Anyone want me to lean on the back of their car? - just a little, you understand - enough to move it on while the wheels spin, but do 95% of the work. Read more

It kind of makes you wonder why gritters throw all the grit out the back
when it would seem more logical to chuck some out the front too. Gritter I
saw here was having no such trouble and was racing around like a mad thing.

Our gritters turn and go backwards on tricky bits and slopes.

With the demise of Saab and others on their death beds and the governments of Europe legislating to make our cars clone-like and fuel efficient above all else I am left wondering who will still be standing in the mainstream in ten years time?

I would suggest we might have :
One French company (with Nissan); VAG; KIA/Hyundai; Ford (& Volvo?); Toyota (& Subaru?) and Beijing automotive (who I think will be selling us cheap Roewe 75's and the Saab technologies they have just picked up).

I wonder where Opel or its offspring might be? Can BMW continue to be independent? Will Honda stay on its own? Will we have a new company from no where selling us electric vehicles?

Any thoughts? Read more

And the only British car company to celebrate 100 years of production still in the ownership of the same families, Morgan.

OK small fry but they are there.

Soichiro Honda would have said similar I think.
