Hi

After a spell parked up inactive in wet weather (oh I love french cars) my 406 has developed this fault...

When the ignition is turned on all seems well for a minute or so then it looks as though the alarm goes mad. The siren thing is disabled anyway but the headlights come on and the indicators flicker like mad (can hear a relay clicking away in glove box I think). Starting / stopping engine, locking / unlocking doors with keyfob seems to have no effect. The only thing I've found that cures it is either disconnecting and reconnecting the battery (which stops it temporarily) or pulling fuse 15 behind the immobiliser keypad (the one for the alarm).

Any thoughts?

and / or

Is there any detrimental effect from running the car with this fuse out? Seems to kill the seat position memory too but that's about it.

Cheers

Hello y'all

It seems my n/s cooling fan is not working. Neither fan appears to come on when I would expect them on at slow speed, only the o/s fan comes on full speed when temp gets over 90ish.

From reading other threads it seems major possibilities are either the one fan is dead (open circuit), or there may be a relay problem (though I can't ascertain for sure whether this would cause these symptoms). I'm kind of hoping it could be the latter as it sounds as though the fan motors are a pig to change.

Any tips would be helpful haven't had a chance to have it apart yet but want to avoid wasting time following a wrong lead when it's so frikkin cold outside to work on it!

Cheers

Hi Guys, If anyone can help me on this I'd much appreciate it.

I ordered a new audi in November, I was told it wouldnt be delivered until end of Jan. and we agreed I woudn't take it until March for the new reg. I have just been told that the car has been built earlier than planned and is already in the UK.

To avoid the VAT increase of almost a £1000, I would like to pay in full for the car before Xmas, but still take it in March.

The dealer is saying if I want to prepay- I would have to take the car now/Jan- the reason they are giving is that they can not invoice a car if it hasnt been registered.

This is not what I want as I agreed delivery in March (it suits me due to my current car will be 3 months short of being 3 years old and I feel i've added enough miles and use to make the most of the depreciation)

The question is - what is the problem with me prepaying the dealer before Xmas to avoid the VAT increase and then registering the car March 1st?

I dont see a problem with it- are they just fobbing me off? Read more

...You can pay less VAT if the dealer reduces the price of the new car....

To a limited extent - the vatmen are well aware of this accounting device.

For example, they will not accept a deal in which a p/ex worth £5,000 is shown as £1,000 with a £4,000 discount off the new car, thereby saving the customer the VAT on £4,000.

Lost control of my Golf in the snow today, only doing 15mph. result alloy impacted on kerb and left big dent in alloy rim.

Anyone recommend a company in the midlands area that can repair damaged alloys.

Or anyone recommend other than VW dealers where I can price up a new alloy to replace it. It is the current spec 16" Atlanta alloy wheel.

Thanks

Hi, hoping someone can help me - driving along the other day about 60mph and felt a slight loss of power, then about half a mile later a much bigger loss, plenty of smoke and rattling then had to pull over. The engine started again after a few turns but plenty of smoke so called to get towed. The guy said it's probably the turbo blown - does this sound right?

Several garages have quoted about £900 - £1100 for the job and as it's outside my house I would need to get the car to them. Not sure of anyone near Stow on the Wold that can check it over for me outside my house though...

I'm not sure about the problem but if it is the turbo and it is that cost I'll probably sell on ebay or something and get amore reliable newer car.

Has anyone else had similar problems - it's only done 78K miles?

Thanks Read more

I would prefer a practical test to a theory , our C-max went into Ford main dealer for fault diagnostic 5 days later and 100 pages showing Ford couldnt resolve problem , a roadside guy has no incentive to make money just get you back rolling again , scanners and diagonostic just away to print money... to many sensors that can be so miss leading.

I am getting reluctant to visit this site. It seems to tie my CPU up at almost 100% and slow my computer right down. I am running latest Firefox with popup blocker on and Flash disabled.

HTML in posts

A small minority of people abused this and then other people started jumping on the bandwagon with ridiculously large font sizes & font colours. A decision was made to only allow bold, Itallic, and underline commands. There are a couple of other HTML commands that can be used, but they have no significant impact on how the post looks.

I was waiting for a coach to negotiate a sharp bend earlier, and the driver waved as she came by, smiling and calling out of the window "There'll be three more of us along in a second!". She seemed to be hugely enjoying the drive.

The others came along straight after. They were all being driven by women. Is this unusual? What sex are most coach drivers? Read more

women bus drivers are more considerate than men who tend to be aggressive in their driving techniques, more so these days because they threaten to phone the police if you remonstrate about their bad driving and certainly in my area the police side with the drivers (many cases in my local rag about them)

I'm cursing the ABS again, now that we've got a little snow. I can't switch it off, but I was told that "If you apply the handbrake until the light just comes on, it will switch off the ABS". Is this true? If there's enough snow later, I'll try it, but has anyone an answer now? Read more

ABS in genrral is not dangerous in this weather. In the last two heavy snowfalls its cuased me no problems at all.

With the snow falling, I thought it only right to draw your attention to the Health and Safety advice that N Pole enterprises have received. My S Claud please take note.

1. In relation to the Sleigh...

"Jingle Bells, jingle bells
Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way"

A risk assessment must be submitted before an open sleigh is considered safe for members of the public to travel on. The risk assessment must also consider whether it is appropriate to use only one horse for such a venture, particularly if passengers are of larger proportions. Please note, permission must be gained from landowners before entering their fields. To avoid offending those not participating in celebrations, we would request that laughter is moderate only and not loud enough to be considered a noise nuisance.

2. In relation to the propulsion mechanism ...
"Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows."

You are advised that under the Equal Opportunities for All policy, it is inappropriate for persons to make comment with regard to the ruddiness of any part of Mr. R. Reindeer. Further to this, exclusion of Mr R Reindeer from the Reindeer Games will be considered discriminatory and disciplinary action will be taken against those found guilty of this offence. A full investigation will be implemented and sanctions - including suspension on full pay - will be considered whilst this investigation takes place.

"Little donkey, little donkey on the dusty road
Got to keep on plodding onwards with your precious load "

The RSPCA have issued strict guidelines with regard to how heavy a load that a donkey of small stature is permitted to carry, also included in the guidelines is guidance regarding how often to feed the donkey and how many rest breaks are required over a four hour plodding period. Please note that due to the increased risk of pollution from the dusty road, Mary and Joseph are required to wear face masks to prevent inhalation of any airborne particles. The donkey has expressed his discomfort at being labelled 'little' and would prefer just to be simply referred to as Mr. Donkey. To comment upon his height or lack thereof may be considered an infringement of his equine rights.

3. In relation to your sat nav ...
"We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star "

Whilst the gift of gold is still considered acceptable - as it may be redeemed at a later date through such organisations as 'cash for gold' etc, gifts of frankincense and myrrh are not appropriate due to the potential risk of oils and fragrances causing allergic reactions. A suggested gift alternative would be to make a donation to a worthy cause in the recipients name or perhaps give a gift voucher.
We would not advise that the traversing kings rely on navigation by stars in order to reach their destinations and suggest the use of RAC routefinder or satellite navigation, which will provide the quickest route and advice regarding fuel consumption. Please note as per the guidelines from the RSPCA for Mr Donkey, the camels carrying the three kings of Orient will require regular food and rest breaks. Facemasks for the three kings are also advisable due to the likelihood of dust from the camels hooves.

There are more, but these are the only ones which are motoring related! Read more

Rudolph, with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Mr S. Claus should be aware that Construction and Use Regulations permit the display of a red light only at the rear of a vehicle.
