I'm after some advice - maybe someone has had a similiar experience in the past.

SWMBO has decided that after a 17 year gap in which she has never driven, it's a long story but needless to say it was my fault :). However, given our village location and me working away, she has decided that it's time she drove again.
My thinking was to get her enrolled at a local driving school again who perhaps specialise in this, I was thinking of doing this as an IOU Christmas present.
Anyone got any ideas on how to proceed or perhaps a different way of approaching this?

You can only take pass plus within one year of passing.

You can get an instructor to teach it, but not take the test. Hence "a course".

For some reason I am finding links in the backroom are forcing adverts to appear even when I am not actively clicking on anything to do with them. Is anyone else having the same issue? It's one thing having banners which you can choose to go to, it's another being thrown into some advert which is not relevant. They always open in another tab then force focus onto that tab. Most annoying.

I'm seriously looking at a 2009 A4 avant 2.0d. Unfortunately it's only the 120ps version. The car is some distance away and I haven't had chance to drive it, so have some concerns that it may be underpowered. I don't need a rocket ship, but want to avoid something that can't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

So simple question. Has anyone got any experience of this engine and is it capable enough?

(S-Line suspension is fine and I don't want a Mondeo :) ) Read more

I do agree with you there WB. Even to the extent that often when I have bought a new car I miss the old one. There is undoubtedly a pleasure in the aquisition of something new mostly driven by anticipation. Cars though, fairly quickly just become "the car" and life continues much as before with the downside of having less money in the bank.

This knowledge will not of course prevent me, or most of us I suppose, doing it again in the future...

I know HJ might not object, but i'll miss the 4car site.

I think the clock started ticking for 4Car when Channel 4 started messing with the 'Driven' tv programme. Once they'd killed off the telly link it was harder for them to sustain it without a definite identity, or association with personalities.

I particularly used to like the Top Ten features and their Christmas Car Quiz was always a highlight.

As is the modern way, they lost me when they started to appeal more to the 'yoof' market, by bringing in a 'couple of dudes' to jabber on about cars for the YouTube generation. Must be getting old, but this happened to the telly counterpart too - who could forget the utterly pointless 'Banzai' section of Driven, when they tested a car for its tyre smoking prowess...?

Thank goodness for Honest John!

Well due to the nice weather tonight i've slid into a 2008 Ford Ranger in my Leon Cupra, all 4 wheels locked and i even had time to put it into reverse before i hit him. I was only doing about 5mph and he was stationary, so damage has been limited to his big front bumper. Now as im a mechanic, and my excess is £750, im going to try and source a bumper for it, so has anyone any links or number of a Ford breakers, 4x4 breakers etc, preferably in to Yorkshire area?
Tried eBay etc, no luck

the biggest problem on ice is people driving like normal ie hard on throttle and
brakes and going to fast or people panicking - slow and smooth wins through!

- and people doing 5mph on roads that have been completely cleared of snow, grittted and salted and are now merely wet.

Help!

My Nissan Tino has been a reliable car for the last nine years but unfortunately with age
(it happens to us all) it just isn't worth keeping it any longer.

So time for a change. I'm looking for a car that'll get me up and down a motorway
(60 miles a day) in reasonable comfort with a reasonable MPG. But most importantly of all good reliability and sub £5000

I would also need to fit the Missus and my three kids in it occasionally. Although she's driving around in a nice new Mazda5 (how did that happen?!)

I think I have befuddled my brain by looking at to many reviews because I now seem to be chasing my tail unable to make a decision. And every time I read the "bad bits" and "what to look out for" I change my mind again.

Anyone got a suggestion other than buy a bike?

Hi can you guys help? My son bought his 1st car just over 2 weeks ago (from a small local dealership) that has a 30 day warranty and we are getting problems with it. The hazzard lights come on from time to time and the speedo dies (stays at 0) too. As I said, its not happening all the time but happening enough since he bought the car to be a worry. The car was taken back to the place of purchase after 6 days and they said they could not find anything wrong on a diagnostics check they had someone do for them. They have reluctantly taken the car back for a second time today to see if they can see whats wrong. What can this fault be and what should they be looking for as they dont seem too happy to help us? My son almost had a crash cause another driver misread the hazard lights coming on as a signal to pull out in front of him, they had just came on and the guy pulled out. He has just passed his test and we dont want him getting points if he is out and the speedo dies again or worse. Also there is a very low vibration noise like a very low machine gun sound which they were also told about last week and has not been fixed. One of the wheel bearings had to be replaced on the car before we collected it after we flagged it on the roadtest and they re-motd it. We have also found out that the car was at the Citreon garage it originally came from at the end of October with the Hazzard lights and seatbelt warning lights coming on - they could not find the fault.

Please help if you can. Read more

many car drivers don't stop for level crossing stop lights (motoring

Ah yes, those sorts of lights... not even when there are gates as well...
