Just goes to show how tight things really are.

I'll miss it, too. Good, well balanced reviews/road tests on there. Soem of them by well respected journalists.

It was always a place I'd go for a review/test etc - after HJ's place of course.

Wonder where all that content is going? Would be a shame if it all just disappeared.

Maybe HJ can put a bid in !

I'll miss 4car greatly. It's the nearest competitor to this site in terms of quality content, and in some ways (news and motor sport coverage for instance) was superior.

I liked their reviews and long term tests too, although I had noticed a slide in quality in the last year or two, as they became a little more cliched and uninformed. Must have been running out of cash for decent staff. Either way, it was good to get different points of view, as good as the Car-by-car section is here.

We should all start clicking on the ads on this site, we don't want honestjohn.co.uk to go the same way...

Shame... the writing on 4Car was generally quite good, the road tests fairly objective, and some of the features genuinely interesting. Did sometimes wonder how they justified its existence to the Channel 4 management though...

Hi

When i found this site - 4car was discarded by me.

my regs are Whatcar, HJ, parkers, Autoexpress, & a couple of forums for the jeep 7 merc.

I must say 4Car never really 'grabbed' me - it had (from fast fading memory..) a rather cluttered, busy look with poor & distracting colours. As for content, I assumed it was a sort of syndicated site - you know, bits & bobs of road tests/articles from all over & no real identity.

When researching a topic, roadtest etc, any marked '4Car' I usually ignored; guess many others did too.

Survival of the fittest though: if it didn't get the hits it won't get the ads.

TBH, I find backroom forum is the most attractive part of this HJ site.

For video reviews, WhatCar is better.

WhatCar tends to focus a bit heavily on "driver satisfaction" rather than the practical day-to-day use the cars are put to.

I don't really care how fast I can go through a slalom.

I think the clock started ticking for 4Car when Channel 4 started messing with the 'Driven' tv programme. Once they'd killed off the telly link it was harder for them to sustain it without a definite identity, or association with personalities.

I particularly used to like the Top Ten features and their Christmas Car Quiz was always a highlight.

As is the modern way, they lost me when they started to appeal more to the 'yoof' market, by bringing in a 'couple of dudes' to jabber on about cars for the YouTube generation. Must be getting old, but this happened to the telly counterpart too - who could forget the utterly pointless 'Banzai' section of Driven, when they tested a car for its tyre smoking prowess...?

Thank goodness for Honest John!
