Hi;
I really hope someone out there with a bit more car knowledge than myself can help me here. Don't get me wrong, I can just about change a tyre, know where the water, oil petrol etc goes, but that's about my knowledge and I think my garage is messing me about.

I'll try and keep this short, but please bear with me, it's a longish story! :)

I bought the above car (automatic) in May after my beloved Yaris died. I paid about £1700 for it as it was all I could afford. I think I made a hasty purchase, but small, cheap automatics are like hens teeth, I'm self employed and my daughter is autistic and needs running around to a lot of appointments (plus I live in the sticks) so being without a car was a nightmare.

Anyway, at the end of June, Piglet came to a dead stop wilst I was driving, no warning lights, no noise, nothing. I got recovery to take me to nearest garage which he said his family had used for years and was at end of my road. They said that my head gasket had gone, and charged me 500 pounds to fix it. The invoice states (I'm copying it here cos it's just jargon to me!) remove head from engine, strip down, have tested & faced, refit parts to head, then head to engine, fit new thermostat, cambelt kit & fanbelt. Head pressure tested & faced is also on invoice, together with plugs, oil filter, oil, head bolts & anti freeze.

I picked it up & went to get daughter from school, whilst there, a friend noticed that the bonnet was open and tried to shut it for me, it wouldn't shut as there was a spanner left on the top so the catch couldn't 'catch'!
At first, Piglet seemed to have a new lease of life, but gradually started to loose a bit of power, and was running sluggishly, then started 'chugging' a bit at low speeds. (Almost like when a manual car is about to stall.)
Mid October, I was on my way to the motorway, stopped for petrol & a very helpful man at the petrol station noticed water dripping from underneath the car (under front.)
He put some more water in for me and suggested I take it back to the garage.

I did this, and they told me that it was the thermostat housing that had leaked, and charged me 40 pounds to fit a new one.
Then, at the beginning of this month, it refused to start and when it finally got going, took me 2 miles up the road before the STOP light started flashing and it made a horrible noise.
I rang the garage, he tried to tell me to put some water in it and get it to him, but I honestly didn't know where to put it, so he came out to where I'd broken down, put some water in and followed me back to his garage.
He then did nothing for 3 days, and I had to chaase him as he wasn't ringing me back, eventually, he rang and said to come and pick it up. He said that it had been the water not circulating, a pipe was cold that should have been hot and that he'd taken the thermostat out and put it back in again. He didn't charge me, but asked that I go back 3-4 days later so he could check the water levels. I took the car out for a few runs and found i was doing the same thing again, chugging along.
I took it back again, and when he asked if I had returned to have the water checked, I said that I had brought i back to be fixed as it was doing the same thing as last time before it 'died' and I couldn't risk that with my daughter in the car.
Besides, from what a friend had explained to me, if I carried on driving it and the head gasket was about to go, I could do some serious damage to my engine.
This was last Wednesday, he didn't ring me or his wife, who runs the 'office' as he had promised too. Even though I had asked him to as I deperatly needed my car for several psychiatrist appointments I had for my daughter Thurs & Fri.
He didn't reeturn two of my calls on Friday, and I eventually caught his wife yesterday. She said he'd just popped out & would ring me back, he didn't.
After ringing twice today, he eventually rang me back to say that they were 'having a think' as to what to do.
Basically he said that he thought that there was some water leaking into my cylinder and that would get on my spark plugs and that was probably what was causing the chugging at low speeds and misfiring.
He said that the cheapest option, would be to run some 'additive' round the system which might seal any leak. If not, it would be taking the whole head of the block (whatever that means) which would be expensive.
I'm totally confused and to be honest, even 50 pounds is a lot to me right now. I've tried to ask a few male friends for advice, but most said they don't know enough about it, but they reckoned that the gaage hadn't done the initial head gasket job properly.
I've looked on wikipedia about gaskets and cylinders and have only confused myself further. From what I can see, the head gasket is fixed to the cylinder and then 'capped' with something.
I feel like he has made a mistake somewhere when he did the original job, and then placated me by 'tweaking' things just to get me out of his garage and back on the road, when what he should have done, is taken it all apart again?

I really don't know, but what I do know is that I get the feeling that he is telling me anything because I'm a dozy woman! I really object to that, but feel like I'm in no position to argue without knowing what I'm talking about! I used to have a fab garage I went to, I trusted him completely, but sadly his garage burnt down earlier this year. i just don't trust this bloke, but at the same time, I need my car fixed, and safely back on the road without spending any more money on it that I shouldn't have to it this was all his fault.

Anyone that has read this far (sorry it's such a long story!), thank you! And if anyone could offer any advice I'd be very grateful.
Many thanks
Lucy

Hi Lucy
So basically, the garage had added Radweld or similar, and handed it back to you. I'm not convinced the original problem has been or can be sorted like that. Sounds like there's still a coolant loss and subsequent overheating, I still think there's a cylinder head problem. Keep an eye on the coolant level over the next few days, have a good look around the radiator and hoses/engine area for external leaks, with the engine running. Just incase, check also inside the car for signs of heater matrix leaking (damp carpets?/damp smell?). If you are losing coolant but no obvious signs of leakage, it suggests head/head gasket failure ( coolant will be lost internally and your rough running -chugging- suggests that.). Is there anyone else who can advise you - maybe the owner of the old garage you used? Any good mobile mechanics in your area?
At the end of the day the car is not properly repaired and you may need to make a strong case against the original garage, in my opinion. Don't be fobbed off.
Best of luck and keep posting, plenty of experts on here, far more knowledgable than I!

Hi All,

Great forum and have to say am a newbie to it...hopefully this will be a lasting relationship heh heh.

Right then, the nitty gritty - the car is a 1997 VW Golf mk3 1.6CL (133+k miles) which I've owned for roughly 2 months and in that time I've had endless starting problems with it...

Initially the starter motor gave up so I reconditioned it - end of probs (so I thought) once the cold/wet weather began the car struggled to start but once it had then it was ok for the rest of the day.

I duly replaced the coil-pack, HT leads, plugs, dizzy cap and rotor (there was evidence of arcking on the rotor and 2 of the HT leads) I still endured the non start on cold/wet days ( in the dry no problems...) I had the battery checked by a well-known motor accessory store it showed that the battery was at 13.5 volts but only 47% starting capacity.

I had found that the car would start by using a "boost pack" so using that finding I replaced the battery today (24/11/09) after charging the "new" battery for an hour (one never knows how long the batteries are laying "dormant" in the stores for) the car momentarily showed signs of its old tricks i.e not starting then lo n behold she fired up.

I'm of the mind that the ECU relay may be at fault having scrolled thru' annuls of forums but a) where is the ECU relay - unable to locate near fuse box under dashboard on o/s and b) are there any other faults that could be occurring? Fuel pump primes readily and all lights etc are as they should be as is fuse number 15 (10A) Engine Electronics- any help = greatly appreciated

Regards and otherwise happy motoring

have you tried the alternator? it may be due to water leakage that you may have a problem starting it, the battery having about half the charge looks to me the alternator not charging enough. and not enough voltage means that the alternator not supplying enough juice

Hey all, hope you can help me with my little problem.

My Focus failed its MOT due to the rear, passenger-side brake wasnt up to scratch.

I took it in to the garage that carried out the MOT this morning to look into this issue. I got a call at 3pm to say that the drum was badly corroded and they had to cut the bearings off to have a look at the shoe and it would cost £330 to replace the leaky brake cylinder's and brake shoe's so that it would pass the MOT.

They had taken both sides off, even though it was only one side that was not working. For me to take my car away and have someone else look at it, the garage are asking for £190 for the time taken for cutting the bearing off and putting new bearings in.

Isnt it normal practise for a garage to call you before doing work that would cost hundreds of pounds. I didnt get a call to say they had to cut the bearings off, I got a call after they'd done it!...should I have to pay for this £190? If they had told me the costs before hand I would have gone else where...

Thanks in advance...

I would have preferred NOT to have paid the £145 as they charged for new bearings that I'm not convinced needed cutting...

Next thing is to take it for a MOT re-test and make sure the second garage have fixed it!

Next up...cambelt change! £280 sound reasonable?

SWMBO's 01(Y) Berlingo has no brake lights - inc high-level array. No fuse is shown in handbook for brake lights so have checked them all visually. Have also checked conventional bulbs as I'd heard one of these blowing could put the whole circuit out.

How can I find and check the switch? Is there a hidden fuse somewhere?

Any ideas anyone please? Thanks in advance

Thanks both.

In view of he lovely weather I took it to a local indy this morning. Cause was a build-up of gunge around the switch - sorted within an hour for the princely sum of £21.

Confused Dave

In need of some help here....

I'm being told that my oil pump balancing shaft went yesterday and the VW garage are telling me that the engine needs stripped and replaced at £ 4k, as presumably it ceased up! The car was fine when the engine was running idle, but as soon as it moved the digital read out said stop. Helpfully the RAC got me to drive it about a bit and look to have knackered it in doing so!

I've heard through some friends that the Passat has had some issues with faults on the oil pump balancing shafts recently and was wondering if any one has had experiance of this??

Any assistance massively appreciated Read more

If the warranty hasn't been invalidated, they don't have much choice Rob, so not exactly an act of generosity?

I thought i was having trouble with the glow plugs on my Sedona until the nice man at Kia told me my engine doesnt have any. Apparently it has a pre heater attached to the inlet manifold.

If the pre heater was not working properly would the heater warning light on my dashboard light up (other than when it should do)?

does anyone have any experience of one of these going faulty?

Thanks for your help Read more

My wife has travelled a route to her place of work every day for 7 years, and this route includes a lights and barrier controlled level crossing. It is a very busy crossing and the lights start flashing well before the barriers close. Most users of this crossing know that there is a reasonable time delay between the start of the lights flashing and the barriers coming down. So everyone tries to get across and indeeed users are under pressure to get across.
My wife received a notice of intended prosecution this weekend from the British Transport Police for entering the prohibited area whilst the lights were flashing, and has been asked to give details of the driver. She does not dispute the charge but says that this has been common practice for users of this crossing. It is obvious that a CCTV has now been installed to record all such miscreants.
Whilst not condoning the dubious practice of jumping the lights at such crossings We wondered what was the legality of such a notice, and also what might be the results of filling in the form.
This is an unknown area for me as I did not realise that NIP's could be issued by the Transport Police.
Of course it would have been a simple matter to place a sign at the crossing stating that any future infringements of the lights would result in punishment, but this was not the case.

Doesn't he know that you are supposed to blow all the candles out with one breath?

That's why he got knocked down by a lorry - last birthday he took four puffs to blow out his candles - guaranteed one year's bad luck!

Edit. That should have been attached to the BBC link.

Why do the UPS delivery vans [brown colour with yellow UPS logo] do not have any doors on drivers' and passengers' sides??

It can't be typical to all courier vans as Royal Mail or TNT vans do have doors!

If you look up UPS vans on Wiki - some interesting facts, otherwise it was discussed here some time ago when a poster wanted to source a second-hand one.

What is the BRs advice on car batteries.

I have an 06 Focus with the original Ford battery. So out of warranty and coming up to 4 years old. My experience with Fords is that their batteries in the past don't last long, and I've usually had to replace everyone.

Would you change it before it gives up the ghost, or wait until it dies? Read more

Modern charging systems-those using "smart" alternators must use "calcium" batteries.Calcium batteries can be used with any sort of charging systems, even three brush dynamos. My Escort Diesel has just had it's battery replaced at 9 1/2 years-it hadn't failed but was definitely cranking more slowly and,as I was going on a long continental journey in it,changed it just in case. This car is not used regularly;goes out about every three weeks but never on short journeys. The one removed was a sealed unit(as is the new one),so it was never checked in all that time.Never had any bulbs replaced,no electrical problems and the A/C still works!!

Hi

I have uneven running when car is cold for the first 200 metres or so. I have had various checks done, and replaced a couple of parts but it is no better, but no worse. Nothing shows up on diagnostics. An article I read suggested cleaning the MAF sensor. I have checked both the haynes manuals, one for up to 2003 and one for July 2003 onwards, and they both show where it should be, my car was first sold in June 2003.
I have checked under the bonnet and there is no MAF sensor fitted. There is a space for it but this is blanked off. Can someone please check under their bonnet and see if they have a MAF sensor fitted for cars post JUne 2003. I cannot find any loose wires and would assume that it would not run if unplugged, so maybe there isn't one any more. Engine is a 2.0 Durotorq 115bh TDCi Mondeo. Location of the MAF is on the outlet side of the air filter, if you have one it is easy to see, if it is not there, you will have a raised area with two screw holes. 4B-6 in the haynes manual, I think.

Thanks Read more

Hi

I have checked on another site and they seem to say that on some mondeos there was no MAF sensor fitted. Something to do with the type of Turbo !!

So I may have answered my own question.
