I recently changed the oil on my Pug 406 HDI, due to error on my part I assumed the recommended oil was Castrol Edge 0/30w(or similar).
Reading the castrol site this morning I realise the correct oil is 5/40.......
Should I change it or will it be ok for another couple of thousand miles?
Ta in advance. Read more
The Castrol web site says for most 406 HDI models:
Do not use 0W/5W/10W-30
I presume this is taken from Peugeot's recommendation.
I'd be reluctant to do any long, hard journies where the oil gets hot until I replaced it with the correct spec.
Pricey stuff as well!
Took the works van to a petrol station insnip(no naming and shamming) at 2am for full tank of diesel for a nice old jolly to skipton.
Got to station found it had a closed sign but there were taxis filling up at the pumps, so i parked the van up in line and the attendent said no fuel were empty!
Still this guy is filling up the taxi so i said either serve me or it's trading standards in the morning i got fuel but what a snip cheek.

my car seems to run fine if left overnight but on occasions when when left for a few hours after my first trip the engine will start running idling rough . Almost feels like the ECU may be running in limp mode . I kinda ruled out HT leads and plugs because it starts ok and runs ok first thing in the morning . any ideas would be helpful cheers Read more
We had a lemon thread the other day and got to thinking what the peaches over the last few years have been. Maybe a bargain car or one that just somehow you were very fond of and gave you that magic moment or two. My old Victor (fd) I think 2 litre once on a late night trip from London to Dorset with a deserted M3 on a clear night was brilliant, headlights on for miles and just purred along. Some summer trips on the old Honda 250 bike were lovely too. Read more
2 Volvos.
A 1983 (Y) 360GLS, metallic green with beige interior. Mmm. Bought for 150 quid with over 100k on the clock a year's MOT and road tax in 1998, and did over 30,000 trouble free miles in a year. Didn't spend a penny on it apart from a pair of tyres. Then I fancied a change and gave it to a friend in need, who taxed and MOT'd it and ran it for another 6 months before the head gasket killed it. A great bangernomics success story.
I replaced it with a G-reg Volvo 480ES with 150k on the clock, which cost a wee bit more at £1500. This car drove like new, and went for 25k miles without a problem, apart from the occasional inexplicable refusal to turn over, a problem which would suddenly go away after an hour or so for no apparent reason. After a year or so, it was hit whilst parked by a municipal dust cart and written off (incident eye witnessed and reported to me when I returne dto the car, but the witness had not taken the reg number). The council never owned up to the incident, and I suffered a total loss as I had TPFT insurance only. Drat. Lesson learnt.
I loved both cars and still miss them - obviously the 360 was by far the better value as it was virtually free, but the 480 was a lovely car too.
Quite fancy a C30 now, thinking about it. If only I didn't need 4/5 doors.
My wife has a 56 plate Focus 2.0L turbo diesel which developed a weird fault at the weekend. Parked on the drive and locked up the wipers, headlights and indicators all came on together. The headlights were actually flashing on and off. Unlocking the car and using the key and fiddling with switches did nothing to stop it and since it was 11 pm and dark the only way I could stop it was to drop the fuseboard in the passenger footwell and pull the main plug out. The next morning I reconnected the plug. The wipers/lights/indicators were OK but now I had no starter with the message 'engine systems fault' on the display. The car was towed to the main Ford Dealer who subsequently declard that water had been found in the fuse box and that would be £540 to replace. I had checked for water before taking it in and everything was bone dry. I towed the car away and am now left pondering the problem. Any ideas gratefully received. Read more
Pollen filter for AC housed very close to fuse board. Maybe moisture originated from here if the pollen filter hasn't been changed recently.

Wholeheartedly agree AE - my thoughts exactly - it's like seeing a favourite uncle's slow decline.
It will be a long time before this guy attempts to show off his riding skills again -

In view of the recent flooding, has any Back roomer experience of salvaging a submerged car? Was it possible to get them going again and if so what were the costs and problems involved? I am specifically asking about short duration immersion, not about a vehicle that has been underwater for more than a day.
Some quite nice cars must come into this category each year and I wonder if a bit of patience and TLC could resurrect what an Insurance company might have written-off.
Has anyone actually done this?
