I was out in the old KIA Pride yesterday when I noticed a drop off in performance. It had lost it's edge at the top end. It'll happily rev to 7K normally but it suddenly was topping out at 6K, this was in first with the foot to the floor.

It would happily get to 4K, but then struggle any further.

I checked the carb, thinking it felt as if the second choke wasn't opening. I could see the first open on the cable operation, but can only assume the second is controlled by vacuum and throttle opening. I wasn't prepared to try that stationary.

It's got a crude EGR, where a bleed off the cat feeds directly into the air filter (no valve). This seemed excessive and noisy. Checking the exhaust outlet, that seemed muted without the usual pulses. I've heard of collapsed cats (yes it's got one).

I pulled the cat off and could see that was no problem, so I thought I'd check the rest of the system. The back box rattled. The exhaust has been on less than three years and is showing no signs of external rusting.

The little pile of black bits is what I assume to be the perforated tube that runs through the box. It seems this rusted through and allowed the wadding to block the exhaust path, increasing back pressure and forcing more exhaust through the EGR.

The back box is now completely empty, I can see right through it, but stangely the car isn't any louder.

I guess it doesn't get enough long journies. It'll be interesting to see how long the casing lasts. There's no sign of any rust on the outside.

Took it down the road, 7K in first and second, no problem.

The missus would like to know the reason for putting all that stuffing in there.

I'd still appreciate anyone telling me how the second choke on the carb is operated. Read more

Odd little car...... like Ladas and Skoda Estelles, they tend to have a loyal band of devotees who defend them to the hilt despite their acknowledged failings.

My experience of them is via Mrs. H who had one when we first met. Have to admit it pulled well and the headlights were good, but reliability wasn't its strong point. Can't say I was overly impressed with it myself, the Punto which replaced it was a much nicer drive.

Herself's Pride was one of the last batch, on a "V" plate. I understand that these weren't quite as good as the earlier ones, any other owners present and previous know why?

Oddly enough, despite Tom's comments above ours failed MOT due to extensive rust; possibly because of its location, spent much of its life in Aberwristwatch where there is a thriving colony of Kia Prides, think the local dealer bought a job lot!

Just about to replace the slightly noisy (I'm guessing worn) wipers on the Camry (144K and still running like clockwork, thanks for asking!) as part of the 'lets get ready for winter' preparations.

Just wondered if anyone had any recommendations other than the Bosch ones with a spoiler I tend to go for, either from Halfords or an online supplier.

The online store has Trico Neoforms which they claim are the bee's knees but I'm slightly put off by the fact that they seem to have spammed every car owners club going, offering alleged discounts.

Odd, getting to that time of life where a clear windscreen and silent wipers suddely becomes so important...it'll be driving gloves and a tartan blanket next I tells ya!

ps: just discovered ( 2 years on) that the previous owner had stored a box of replacement bulbs in a cubby hole under the boot carpet with each pack seperated from the next by a small piece of polystyrene to damp vibration. My only gripe is that the thing hasn't blown a bulb (apart from one rear numberplate bulb) in the time I've had it! Read more

I bought and fitted a complete set of 3 Bosch wipers from local motor factor for SWMBO's Yaris and paid around £15 but it so worth it to stop the noise of squeaking and judder from the Halfords cheapies I last fitted.

Even more worth it as it also stops the noise of SWMBO complaining .....

At the same time I checked the oil and tyre pressures on her and my car and topped up the washer fluids .....

I then had to go and have a lie down.....

Hi
Am new to the forum and car buying in general so sorry for any silly questions!
My partner is about to buy a 55 plate Peugeot 206 and on the HPI check a
mileage discrepancy came up:

06 Sep 2006 BVRLA 10,268
18 Sep 2006 BVRLA 30,804
22 Sep 2006 NMR 10,000
22 Sep 2006 NMR 10,270

The car now has 24,000 miles, it was a lease car for the first 6 months (hence the high milage between Feb and Sep 2006) and then privately owned til part exed in July this year.
We have asked the seller about the strange high reading for 18 Sep, he is convinced it must be an inputting error- I'm inclined to agree as it seems almost impossible to put on 20,000 miles in that space of time...?

Or should we be worried? Is there any way we can find out more about what has happened?

BTW the car seems in good condition, minimal wear and tear, the front tyres need replacing (which the seller will include).

Many thanks in advance! Read more

I think the clue is in the source of the mileage readings. BVRLA = British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association

Hi new to this, but finaly today plucked up courage to buy crv 1999, it has 62k miles, looks pretty clean, but i have a couple of issues i need some help with please,

First off there is a rubbing sound from the left hand wheel only, not the right, but it only occurs when i turn harder, i had broken cv joints in old car and it doesnt remind me of that awful clicking sound, just a bit concerened, the right tyre has a whipping sound as it rotates, only when applying accelaration, not when idle, comes and goes not often maybe every 15 mins, any ideas.

Also when driving primaralily in 3rd and 4th gear i get a VERY high pitch whine coming from right hand side of engine??? again any help i have no idea what it is.

The only sensible course and one which will make any real difference, is to fit a turbo engine, there are plenty out there and it will give a considerable improvement to the performance.

I`m about 6` 2" with a 33 inside leg - and having trouble finding comfort on modern bikes. Question is - are they now more `scrunched up` - or is it me having memories of bikes where the seat seemed higher, further back and flatter?

I sat on a few bikes out in the Far East and found them grim. the seats seemed to be where I would expect the fuel tank to be and I felt like I was on that horse that belonged to a girlfriend years ago. (knees up near my chin)

I want straight legs too - feet down, it`s no good with knees bent at 45% `cos my knees won`t take it.

I seem to remember sitting well back on a flat seat on my Triumph twin in the 60`s and the same with my Yamaha SR 500.

I feel like I`m astride a hobby horse on a modern bike and that handle bars rise out of the centre of the fuel tank.

What`s going on? Read more

my Honda Blackbird is quite a comfy beast, i've done week long holidays on it...my brother's Honda Fireblade most certainly is not, I managed 50 miles

mine when new was called a sports tourer (nowadays it would be more a tourer), his is a sports bike

what you need is a tourer

So, there you are driving along and it gets misty and on come the fog lights on the car in front blinding you.

I do not like it. I'm not 100 Meters behind and it aint even foggy! If I see someone aproaching from behind the I switch off my fog lights.

However what I want to know is, what do YOU think it means by 'seeing' 100M in fog to make it legal putting on fog lights.

Here are my thoughts:

1. At night my 'view' distance is to a light I can see in the distance oncoming or the lights of the vehicle in front

2. In the day its the same thing, for me, its the distance to an oncoming vehicle lights or the lights of the car in front.

It is not how far I can see the vague hedge on the side of the road or the lines down the centre.

Cheers

So many times I have wanted to stop people and ask why they did something
annoying / stupid etc.

Sadly, that wouldn't be too advisable nowadays.....

Anyone noticed how much drivers are keen to get into "challenges" seemingly in order to get angry with the other?

This morning, turning right at lights with a facing car doing the same. The facing car was blocking the cars behind, so I made my maneouvre only to find that the car behind the facing car decided that he could get by after all and accelerated on his left turn simply in order to prevent me completing the move. Cue lots of angry, affronted staring.....

..So why don't you get frequent punch-ups on evening commuter trains, with angry exchanges between brolly-waving paper readers?...

Lack of anonymity and the other party is too close for comfort.

The average angry motorist doesn't want a personal 'feel the warmth of your breath' confrontation.
