Hamsafar

Yesterday, it didn't rain for a few hours, so I sanded the headlights and polished them.

They were looking yellowed and hazy, like old sellotape and smothered in miniscule chips like they had been sandblasted.
Now they are clear and not yellowed.

If anyone has headlights that need doing, there are lots of videos on youtube showing how to do it.

I masked off the surrounding paintwork to protect it.
Sanded with 1200 wet & dry soaked in soapy water for about 10 mins.
Then used an orbital polisher and T-cut paste until it was shiny again (10-15 mins on and off)
Cleaned and inspected at intervals of a few minutes.
Lightly polished by hand at the end.
The difference is astounding, a bit like..

It was apparent that some sort of lacquer layer was coming off, and it was that which was yellow. Apparently a UV coating which may need replacing. Read more

Drive shaft Splines are known to fail - especially if they haven't been put back in properly? It only takes one to fail to lose all drive.

My lovely little Audi A3 1.6 has to go and I'm very upset. I'm looking for some advice on how to sell it though and wonder if anyone can help!

It's a 2007/56, 1.6 Special Edition 3dr in metallic black, which I've owned since new (one lady owner cliche). It's only done 15k because I have been working away from home and soon realised that you can't drive 2000 miles a month in a petrol car!

First things - how would anyone think of selling it? I'd ideally sell privately and looking on the t'internet they seem to be in the region of the £10k + band (???)

Secondly - replacement car. I'd really really really like another A3 but this time probably a 1.9 Tdie. Any other recomendations?

Thanks

Have you worked out how much it will actaully cost you in fuel over a diesel?

The cost to change a car is considerable. Likewise as you have had the car from new, you know how it has been treated and you will never know that if you buy a secondhand car to replace it.

Assuming the petrol gets 35MPG and a diesel 48MPG, fuel at £4.60/gallon (but diesel may well go up more than petrol in the winter months) and 24k pa, the cost in fuel is about £850 a year extra for the petrol car. Not a huge amount in the scheme of replacing a car

Hi all,

I am looking for a little advice on a slight problem with my pride and joy.

When I got the car, It stalled when braked at junctions or stopped suddenly. I found a way to get round this by not engaging the clutch until the last minute which in most cases has worked till I could take time off work to investigate (suspected Cold Air Sensor) however I now have a bigger problem which I am not sure whether or not it's related. Driving along the other day and I heard a small pop and the car lost power, it still drives but stinks of unburnt petrol (which it did anyway with the other problem but now worse). I pretty much stopped driving it after I got home. When you accelerate, nothing really happens but every so often it gets power back then drops again so you kind of kangaroo about. I am still going to clean/replace the cold air sensor anyway but really not sure this would cause this 'sudden' problem. I am not sure if this explains enough as I am not really the most technical person.

Rundown:

1) Rarely starts on first click (totally unrelated i'm certain)
2) Stalls when stopping suddenly (prior to power loss time) - Suspected Cold Air Sensor
3) Popping noise from exhaust after power loss time although foot is flat to pedal to get any power to move - almost seems like some sort of blockage as the fuel seems to be getting there but not making car move most of thetime but is giving short spurts of power then goes again.
4) Idle is not good. When you start the car it idles okay but then after a minute or 2, it worsens then eventually the car stops.
5) Running really rich.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi All,
A Few weeks ago, I have bought a nearly new Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec (registered on 09 March) with this unit integrated (Communications Pack (Advanced Navigation System with Radio/CD) with Bluetooth and USB 5" colour display, 6 speakers, SD memory card slot for data (e.g. music) exchange; navigation data on SD card and CD, Bluetooth and USB).
In the Handbook (8M2J-19C 104-DA 05/08) there are 9 audio units displayed on page 4,5 but none represents the one in my car and there is no indication of any model/name anywhere on the unit.
1.Does anyone know what it is and how to find a correct manual?

2. Before, I used a Tom Tom 500 with speed camera detection program, but I don?t want to carry the bulky TT500 around anymore, could I use the same SD card in the Ford?s navigation system?

3. Or, will I be able to install a Speed Camera Detection program to the Ford
SD card, which came with the car?

Regards

K

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi focusman,
Sorry for the late reply, but thank you very much for your advice. Had a little bit of a task finding the post that you mentioned!

Just been to look at a 2003 fiat stilo for sale privately.

Everything seemed ok, the car was in good condition for its age, only has 38k miles, the owner had receipts for work that had recently been carried out (new exhaust, coils etc.), the owner also seemed genuine (he explained that it needed a service but he didn't want to spend any more money on it after the recent bills). The price also seemed good at £2000.

The problem is that the current owner has had it for two years, but before that it had 4 previous owners. So that's 4 owners in 4 years. On top of that the document with the previous keepers details was missing.

This is the only problem with the car really but it's enough to put me off. Would anyone else be concerned?

Although......

My previous car had 4 owners in a very short space of time.

1st Owner- Dealer demo
2nd Owner- A relative of mine
3rd Owner- Wife of said relative after he died put in her name as part of the probate
4th owner- me.

I had it when it was about 8 months old with less than 5k on the clock.

So there can sometimes be genuine reasons as to a high amount owners, although granted my situation was fairly rare I guess.

did a good job on my car a while back

Just picked up my new Focus 1.6 CDTi Zetec from... well, a very large, well-known Car 'supermarket' west of London.

I say 'new', it's got 7K on the clock and has a small scuff on one of the alloys and a scrape on the front bonnet lip, otherwise no marks, and a pretty nice car.

The lady taking my 13K (in cash) gave me a bundle of stuff including the spare key, wheel locking nut, the SatNav SD card and the Handbook. While she printed out the invoice, I was idly looking through the Handbook case to find that, in fact, there was no Handbook, just the Audio manual.

'Where's the Handbook', I cried, to which she blithely replied, 'Oh, sometimes they don't come with them'. 'Huh? All cars have a handbook, and there's some complex kit on this car', I reacted... 'Well, it's a second-hand car, what do you expect?', she said. 'But, but... I've just paid you 13 grand, I'd at least expect a Handbook. And you don't mention this in your ads, that there might be bits missing from the cars you sell. Can't you just take one from another car, you've got a hundred of them out front?'.

'I couldn't condone stealing from another car', she said as if I'd suggested mugging her mother. 'There's a Ford main dealer just along the road - they'll sell you one for a fiver, that's not very much is it?' 'If it's not very much', I spluttered, 'why don't you knock a fiver off the bill?'.

The upshot was that I went along to the dealer and paid, not £5, but £16+VAT for what I consider to be an essential piece of kit.

So beware, and check that the car you're buying does indeed have everything you'd expect... Read more

I see that a new Focus 1.6 TDCi Zetec 5dr hatch can currently be had from a well-known broker for £13,666. I don't really get these 'nearly new bargains' from supersites - is it me?

Hello to all,new to this place, and after a bit of advice, we have a baby on the
way so need a bigger car than current hatchback 3dr, hence my interest in the
new honda accord,so any owners with the diesel here, any problems ? Read more

Gotanoldhondar

I agree with you over the ride in the a3,the accord is softer but not too soft
that you dont feel involved, also agree with the point over bulid quality, the accord
is as good as an audi now and more reliable plus you get more for your money,
Hondas only problem could be the image thing, which does not bother me at all as
i am going grey anyway.

Ahoy !
Have the 306 Auto that turns but does not start.
Clues, new starter fitted due naff battery with loose connections by previous owner.
New battery fitted. No spark
Code inserted, red light on steering wheel spoke goes out, fuel pump whizzes for a second.
Red light on key pad stays red and green indicates when keys pressed then stays off.
Only one red light on dash flashes on radio. Have found alarm button in front of
ignition key and reset. Have disconnected connectors under back seat and battery waited for 20 mins and stood on one leg and put finger in ear. Have replaced crank sensor !!!! Flywheel has damaged spots as the cranking is 'clunky'. Have checked flywheel security by screwdriver down sensor 'ole, difficult but seems OK. Tank shows near full. Anybody any ideas ?
