Missing bits in new car - decanibass
Just picked up my new Focus 1.6 CDTi Zetec from... well, a very large, well-known Car 'supermarket' west of London.

I say 'new', it's got 7K on the clock and has a small scuff on one of the alloys and a scrape on the front bonnet lip, otherwise no marks, and a pretty nice car.

The lady taking my 13K (in cash) gave me a bundle of stuff including the spare key, wheel locking nut, the SatNav SD card and the Handbook. While she printed out the invoice, I was idly looking through the Handbook case to find that, in fact, there was no Handbook, just the Audio manual.

'Where's the Handbook', I cried, to which she blithely replied, 'Oh, sometimes they don't come with them'. 'Huh? All cars have a handbook, and there's some complex kit on this car', I reacted... 'Well, it's a second-hand car, what do you expect?', she said. 'But, but... I've just paid you 13 grand, I'd at least expect a Handbook. And you don't mention this in your ads, that there might be bits missing from the cars you sell. Can't you just take one from another car, you've got a hundred of them out front?'.

'I couldn't condone stealing from another car', she said as if I'd suggested mugging her mother. 'There's a Ford main dealer just along the road - they'll sell you one for a fiver, that's not very much is it?' 'If it's not very much', I spluttered, 'why don't you knock a fiver off the bill?'.

The upshot was that I went along to the dealer and paid, not £5, but £16+VAT for what I consider to be an essential piece of kit.

So beware, and check that the car you're buying does indeed have everything you'd expect...

I suppose the lesson is, don't part with your money until you've checked it out...

I agree that a car that old should have all the books, including the manual, though.

Find out the MDs name and send him a letter, you never know...

I wonder if there is any law that states the car must be sold with a handbook?

Lol

I'm sure there isn't, but it's one of those things that you kind of expect...

No

There's almost certainly no 'law' that says they have to come with a steering wheel but they tend to be fitted. AS OP said, the complexity of a modern car means you need a book of instructions. The original BMW hand controller (i Drive?) had a 250 page instruction book, according to Clarkson!

Well, I checked the car over physically... then she did some sleight-of-hand with the Handbook pack so that I saw various books and things. Only after the cash had gone through did I discover the lack of main Manual...

That thought crossed my mind too :)

A friend bought an ex-demo 525d from a Cheshire dealer - car was described as mint (it was) and it was agreed that a full tank was part of the deal. the car was driven north and only about 1/3 of a tank was left.

He phoned the s/man who ignored him - he wrote to the MD about his disappointment over sharp practice in a £30K deal. By return of post was a cheque for £58.XX.

If you do not ask you do not get.
Missing bits in new car - bell boy
if the ballbreaker was a handbook why not just scrape the £13000 up back into your carrier bag and vacate the premises then?
Missing bits in new car - b308
Sounds like it was an electronic transfer, BB, ("after the cash had gone through")...

Think I may have made a little more fuss at the time I spotted it, though... I hardly think they'd want someone kicking up a fuss in the place...

Very often the case when buying ex hire vehicles or short lease ones from these places.

Lucky if the spare wheel etc is in the car.
Missing bits in new car - Mr.Tee43
Bell Boy, there is a tone of superiority about your comment that typifies a car dealer.

A mere handbook it may be, but if it were me, I would have told then in no uncertain terms that the customer is king at the moment and £13000 is £13000 be it a cheque, bank transfer or even grubby cash as you sarcastically made out, and I want a handbook.

You make it sound as though car dealers are doing us a favour, and then bellyache about how
the retail car trade is dying.

Bad car dealers or any dealer in goods with this attitude deserve to go bust !

It's probably a previous owner that lost the handbook, not the dealer.

I recently sold a car for my daughter that had no handbook. I knew she had it because I made sure it was there when I bought it. A few days after it went, she found the handbook. I doubt if she ever opened it.

I don't know whether this applies to cars but it is illegal to sell tractors and agricultural machinery without the instruction book.

Hmm, interesting, off to Google!

Incidentally, I think I'm also missing the manual for the SatNav, though its all pretty straightforward... (still annoying...)

Aaargh. I now have visions of every Health & Safety officer in every company saying that, in order for you to claim business mileage, that you must sign a sheet to say you have read and fully understood the Manual for your motor vehicle.

Also check in the boot if your Ford Focus for an Easy Fuel funnel, it's needed if you ever need to add fuel using a portable container.

Your not KING at the moment when it comes to second hand cars. You want the guarantee of a handbook? Buy a brand new car.
Missing bits in new car - Mr.Tee43
You must be joking !

Looking for a second hand car for my daughter recently, and there are thousands to choose from. The pain is sorting the wheat from the chaff, because she didn't want to spend more than £3000.

However, spending £13000 as the OP did, the choices of car are overwhelming.

In any case, the attitude that his dealer showed to him is unacceptable and maybe in this case a handbook is missing, so big deal some may say, but if they take this stance with that, what might happen if something like a knocking noise develops somewhere.

I think we all might know the answer !

I agree with others - write to the MD and complain about this person's attitude, which leaves something to be desired.

Owner's Guide
Audio Guide
Warranty and Service Guide
Service History Log

If you only got the Audio Guide you were possibly short of 3 booklets.

A few threads on here seem to suggest service from the giant trade car sales places is a bit, er, threadbare.

At the very least the surly little madam who dealt with the OP should have knocked £10 off for the cost of the handbook.

It's tempting to say buy the car from a main dealer, but the supermarket may have the stock the dealer doesn't.

Everyone says there's thousands of secondhand Focuses, but this one has a desirable spec and there might not be so many of those.
Missing bits in new car - captain chaos
Hmmm
Would expect a car not to have a handbook if it only cost 300 quid
Paid two grand for a motor a couple of years back and got all the handbooks, full dealer history and both sets of keys
The customer is king. They are when they come in my shop and I am when I buy anything.
Why would a car not have a handbook? Do people read them in the bathroom and forget to put them back in the car?
Missing bits in new car - Toyota Red
If the handbook costs a fiver, why on earth would the dealer not, as a matter of course, order a handbook for every car that comes into their possession without one? Pure sloppiness. Even if they don't have one/cant get one, they should at least inform you about it. No excuse for that.

The same sort of thinking crops up on used car listings a lot. 'Needs x, y and z done but they are all cheap/easy/quick to do'

So why don't you do them yourself and have a much nicer car to sell?

I was thinking that too - it's well documented what these places are like.

I'm surprised at the the stuff the OP reeled off that WAS there - spare and locking wheel nut keys, and the sat nav card is particularly surprising.
Missing bits in new car - whoopwhoop
>>"All cars have a handbook, and there's some complex kit on this car', I reacted... "

I'm struggling to think of anything particularly complex on a 1.6 diesel Focus?!

If it had optional SatNav, maybe you'd want the userguide for that - but thats a seperate manual anyway.

The *original* Service Book on the other hand is far more important.
Missing bits in new car - dieselfitter
Agreed on that. OP - was this the first time you had seen the car? I could live with a missing handbook, given that this is not a new car and it's an easily replaceable item. No service book, a scrape on the bonnet and a kerbed alloy would all be deal-breakers for me, unless properly reflected in the price. It sounds like a quickly turned-around ex-rental car, which is about what I would expect from a supersite these days. Sorry. My own experience with the "well-known West of London supersite" was less than perfect, but the car turned out to be absolutely fine and at a discount that I could not have achieved as a private buyer. Hopefully your Focus will too.

Experience from the same dealer in February.
Son bought 05 plated astra, no handbook, mentioned to salesman they agreed to pay for one and gave him a form to take to a Vauxhall dealer confirming that the bill should be sent to them.

In addition, and maybe more useful in many ways, he downloaded an online version of the relevant handbook a week later off the Vauxhall website.

These places, OK this one, are based on quick turnover, that's the price take it or leave it as their business model and they seem to be shifting enough cars doing that, we were satisfied with the price for the age, spec etc of the car and they have sorted out the small problems and one big problem he has had since in a reasonable manner.
Missing bits in new car - DP
My dad bought a three year old high mile (classic ex-lease) Mondeo from this place years ago with no book pack. He wasn't bothered given what he'd paid for the car, the way it drove, and its generally well cared for condition.

The complete handbook pack, service history, printouts etc turned up in the post two weeks later (competely unexpectedly). The lease company had been slow releasing it, and the dealer forwarded it as soon as they had it.

I see that a new Focus 1.6 TDCi Zetec 5dr hatch can currently be had from a well-known broker for £13,666. I don't really get these 'nearly new bargains' from supersites - is it me?
