My cruise control suddenly stopped working although the 'on indicator' illuminates. Any advice please? Read more

Hey, it's working again. Fingers crossed that it stays that way.

The whole notion that they are there to make our roads safer and to cut down congestion caused by parked vehicles has long since been a lie in my eyes.

In my neck of the woods, it's utility companies dragging their feet over their holes in the road that is the biggest cause of traffic holders and thus congestion. Read more

now that sounds like my kind of job walking around doing nothing with no targets
to meet.

The walking part sounds a bit of a bind.

My turn indicators, emergency and side lights are not working.
I replace fuse #25 and it blows immediately.
I have removed and inspected front and back light assemblies and there appears to be no fault and no blown bulbs.
There must be a short somewhere, but I don't know where to start looking.
I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thank you in advance. Malc

Thanks very much for this Elekie&A/C doctor. I took my car to an expert auto electrician in Finchampstead today. He was very thorough with testing and dignostics. He went to the MFC under the steering column and by means of elimination (by cutting, then re-soldering the relevant wires) found the fault in the wiring to the front offside lights in the loom beyond the bulkhead, just below the RH screen wiper. By repositioning the loom away from the wiper mechanism the fault literally disappeared off the ohmeter and we couldn't repeat the leakage. It all now works fine and if there is a next time, I know exactly where to look.

This brilliant engineer also fixed a fault in the engine management system and the car seems to be running much smoother.

Thanks for your interest everyone and special thanks to Phil, the auto electrician, for his patience and perseverence.

Following my flat battery episode detailed here...
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=75029&...5
...I subsequently found that the rear passenger-side electric window no longer works.

Whether this was somehow the cause of the flat battery (whilst the car was left in my garage unused for 2 weeks), or happened as a result of the disconnection/reconnection of the battery, I do not know.

I had followed the procedure from the manual for 'teaching' the driver's door window control panel to control all the windows once the battery is reconnected, but this particular window does not respond.

All the windows give an audible 'click' when you pull up on either the driver's door control panel or the individual door button, however this one does not so I'm fairly sure it's dead.

I've fixed many problems with my cars over the years but, frustratingly, there doesn't seem to be a Haynes Manual for the 6.

Does anyone have any experience of dodgy Mazda 6 electric windows or know if they are easy to fix ? If so, what parts do you think I would need ?

Thanks. Read more

The reason I made a note of that procedure was that my O/S front window was playing-up a bit last year. It would always open and close, but sometimes required several attempts.

I asked my local Mazda dealer to rectify it in December during the last service and, fortunately, all that was required was a quick re-programme for which no charge was made. However, they told me that if it had required a new switch their charge would have been £95 plus VAT.

I have a strange problem with the MIL light. The light is on all the time and the power is down,my scanner says there is no fault codes stored and the system is normal but when I start the engine and read the data stream, the speed sensor is fluctuating between 12 and 135 mph whith the car stationary.I first thought of an air flow meter problem as there are no codes stored but this speed sensor has me stumped, does anyone know if this has happened before as the local dealer is no help at all.
PS,it has an automatic gearbox.
Thanks

Just watched the BBC News. Government state that the cost of motoring is down 17%!

I knew it. Duty has decreased and the price of fuel has plummeted. Car prices are down. I take it you have all noticed.

The figure is reached in comparison to the cost of public transport, the cost of which has increased. And something needs doing to rectify this apparently.

So the cost of public transport is going to come down then to solve the problem? Err I doubt it somehow.

Most everyday consumer items cost less in relative terms than they used to. TVs white
goods holidays mobile phones coffee bananas etc etc. so what makes motoring a special case?

Spot on.

If we're supposed to feel guilty then I don't. Long may it continue to fall.

As we where discussing this subject a few weeks ago following the end of the X type and the endless calls from both camps for more government money to squander, htought it would be of interest.

Just why do we lag behind the Japanese so much ?

I saw on the telly the other day that Hotpoint have closed their factory in
Wales - loss of 300 jobs to Poland. So now we can't even bang a
washing machine together in the UK. It's pathetic.

Hotpoint (and Hoover) have been rubbish for AGES. Had a Hotpoint wm, was nowt but trouble. Am now a sworn Siemens buyer. My Belling range cooker has been nowt but trouble either. Pity we can't build such things here, but have to either go abroad or spend huge amounts on indestructible Agas... now there's a thought. Anyone want to take over an old factory somewhere in this country and build quality domestic appliances to put the wind up the Germans? Perhaps a new forum for that subject needs to be started.

Anyway, I think we need to support JLR. Fact is, they make fantastic cars (though I don't care for the XF's looks and don't like the new XJ much more - and no, I don't want Jags to look like a pastiche of the 60s either) and when they work they're miles ahead of the rest of the competition. A Range Rover is much better on- and off-road than a BMW X5, Merc M, Jeep Grand Cherokee, etc. A Land Rover Defender is much better off-road than ANYTHING with four rubber-shod wheels that can be bought off a dealership forecourt (though the only direct competitor is the Jeep Wrangler). The Discovery is roomier and more capable off road than any other 7-seat SUV. The Freelander did, very briefly, lead its class, until Audi came along with the Q5... the more British car buyers buy from JLR, the quicker they can sort out the niggles that they've been suffering from lately.

Oh, and look at Aston Martin. FANTASTIC cars, excellent build quality, very reliable. Yes, I know the V12 is made in Germany, dammit.
