I'm due to change the front pads on my diesel Yaris, but my Haynes manual warns that there is a risk of the seals in the master cylinder 'flipping' when you push back the caliper cylinders. Is this a real risk , anyone any comments?

madf - there's a good way mentioned by 659 which avoids the need to clamp the pipes.

Open the bleed nipple, and then wedge the brake pedal down a bit with a piece of wood. This blocks the port in the master cylinder, preventing any back flow of fluid, without any risk of damaging the flexi by clamping it.

My Jaguar has intermittent power steering loss. We have scanned the vehicle and revealed the fault code c 1925 (Power Steering Return Valve Actuator). Is this built into the power steering pump, and does this require replacement?? Read more

Hi, my milometer and trip has become unreadable, it is like the clock with the bulb blown! The mileage is correct but you need a torch to just about read it. Can anyone tell me if it is the same repair as say a dash clock, i.e. change the bulb, or is it a more sinister repair! If it is a bulb change, does the whole dash need to come out? Thanks for any help.

Dr Dave

Bulb is about £4.......replacing isn't difficult aslong as you are handy with screwdrivers etc.

A year or so ago, on the official Honda UK site, there were a number of workshop manuals for older models. I was looking to see if they had released one for the CRV II, but can't find any now.

Does anyone now if they still exist in cyberspace (a la the free Glass's Guide via Vauxhall) or have they deleted them?

It was on the Honda website at www.honda.co.uk/car/owner/workshop.html until early this year and I informed Honda when it disappeared, but as far as I know it has not been replaced.

If you copy and paste 'site:media.honda.co.uk manual' into Google you should find most of the manuals still available, but can't see one for the Honda CR-V II.

Forum Pikes peak
Altea Ego

Pikes peak is a big rally cross style race in the USA for those that have never heard of it.

It was run last weekend, and Marcus Gronholm now retired from WRC had a crack at it. Due to lack of oxygen (they think) at high altitude the turbo on his Fiesta exploded (at the time he was blitzing the course record) and filled the car with smoke, he pressed on with 4 km to go using left foot braking to keep what engine revs he had up, and when he finally completed the course, the overheated brakes caused the tyres to explode in flames.

He came second in class

Here is one of the the highest quality (sound and picture) motorsport clips I have seen on youtube of gronholm on the peak (not the actual race it seems, probably setting pace notes, but none the less its stunning film)

and here is a cult fim of Ari Vatanen in 1990 doing the peak in a pug 405 t16.

Lud,
true. This thread has been a bit of harmless fun, let's keep it that way.

Incidentally, does anyone know what the rear view mirror is for in that Fester? :-)

The new Toyota Prius has been getting some very good reviews and was considering one but I have noticed that they have cut the warranty on the Hybrid Synergy Drive system from 100,000 miles and 8 years to 5 years and 60,000 miles do members of the forum think it will have a affect on long term residuals on the car. In the USA "Hybrid-related components for hybrid vehicles are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles. The HV battery may have longer coverage under emissions warranty. Refer to applicable Owner's Warranty Information booklet for details." In CARB states (California etc) the battery warranty is for 10 years, 150,000 miles. Toyota vary the warranty dependent on emissions requirements (CARB) and no doubt market conditions. No doubt, the less competitive Treasure Island market, results in a less generous warranty......

With the high profile accident yesterday to a Formula 1 driver will the industry now do something about the spring problem ?
And, can I have the spring fragment for my rapidly growing collection ? Read more

tyro

I've just read through this thread.

It seems to me that (based on the evidence presented above, particularly from The Swiss Tony) that the frequency of broken springs is not just due to speed humps and poor road surfaces.

It's an issue that I am interested in - since I have had several broken coil springs in the last 4 years, and I cannot recall having any before that.

SO, 2 questions:

1) Do some car manufacturers use more durable springs than others?

2) Is there any way of buying a higher quality spring to replace one that gets broken?

Hi everyone,

My 205 XL AUTO on a H reg. (1991) is running very rich... ???

I'm going to give it a new air, oil and fuel filter, oil change, and new spark plugs but that's about the extent of my knowledge and capability lol when it comes to my pug's running.

It has a manual choke, and I have a Haynes manual on its way too but in the mean time is there anything i can do to stop it running so rich?

When i start it on a morning it turfs some right pink fluffy dice out lol and it reeks of petrol, then once I'm on my way it runs ok mechanically but it is still running rich, Any Idea's would be grateful received as i would like to adjust it if it's possible.

Hi,

A question for anyone who knows... My peugeot 205 XL has a standard clock unit, on the left hand side is an Analogue clock, in the middle is the speedo and on the right of the clock face is the Fuel Gauge, with all the warning lights above in a row... Ok... lol

QUESTION: Can you replace this standard unit with a GTI type clock which has a temp gauge and a rev counter etc unlike the standard clock?

What i'm thinking is that the temp wire on the standard clock could be attached to the temp on the gti clock and wham... you would have a temp gauge rather than just a light that come on or off, same again... with regard to the other aspects. I guess all the wiring will be behind the clock already, and it will just be a case of finding it/connecting them to the right gauges.

But Is it possible, or is it impossible?

P.S i know that the mileage would have to be adjusted accordingly and that this would be a pretty hard job but if you have any thoughts about this question please share your ideas...

Im trying to come up with a way to have a temp guage, a rev counter on my dash and I dont want to change my car as I love it, it might be old but its mine and fun to drive.

Chris.

On the 8 valve TU petrol engines you can hear the valves rattle

The 205 Auto uses the 1.6 XU engine as in the GTI, but has a carburettor instead of an injection system. So I suspect it's not altogether simple to hook up a GTI instrument panel to it.
