The seller of the Rover 25 part I found on a certain online auction site insists that potential buyers should check the part number of the item concerned before purchasing. Reasonable point to make, I guess; but my question is, where can I find used Rover parts numbers in order to carry out that check, given that no Rover main dealers any longer exist? Used parts sellers seem to deal only in descriptions; I guess parts numbers are primarily for new stuff.
Cheers in advance to anyone who can give me a clue. :0) Read more
After driving Peugeots and Citroens a while back (2005) when I worked in car sales I always noted how bad the gearboxs were, especially the 206, it felt so loose and of poor quality.
Anyway I am now in the market for a new car and like the look of the new C5. Has anyone got a 6 speed manual box? Are are they a precise shift and better than the Citroens of old?

I have had my C5 Estate for 3 weeks and 3000 miles now and while the gear box feels a bit slushy it appears to match the diesel engine quite well.
The suspension set up also makes me change gear in a more relaxed manner so it is hard to compare to my previous Passat.
The engine in the C5 is, however, far better than the PD Passat one so you don't need to change gear as often.
I have a 106 with a 1.5 tud5 diesel engine that the head gasket has gone on, i have the option of a running 1.4 tud3 diesel engine to swap in but if it is possible to use the 1.4 head on the 1.5 engine i would prefer to do that as i prefer the cast iron block engine.
What i don't want to do is split the runner to find if i need the head that i can't use it.
many thanks for any contributions on this matter. Read more
actually, yes it can, i have done just that on my 106 grass racer, blew the head and cam shaft on a hill climb, only spare i had was a 1.4, and it all worked out fine for me, as i believe the only real differences are the bore size on the 1.5, use the 1.5 head gasket and you should be fine

I have a VW GOLF, 2004, 1.9 tdi se. What type of gearbox oil do i need for my car and is there a part number for that, which would make my search easier? THANKS EVERY1!! :) Read more
If I were you I would go to a VW dealer and get it from there. I did that with my Passat gear oil change, they gave me the recommended oil and a discount.
The gear oil specs on VWs are complicated, use the wrong one and the gear change is worse. I needed a special spanner to undo the emptying nut as well.
Galaxy wont turn engine or start after long journey , 200 miles or so,the key will not turn the engine,( Turn key nothing happens ) if you then leave it for a short time it will. This is an intermitant thing and has happened twice after stopping for refreshment on a long journey. Battery and starter motor seem fine and have performed O.K. for normal home journeys Read more

As most of you know I am involved as a Founder of the Professional Drivers Association and on January 1st 2009 we launched a charity called The Professional Drivers Foundation aimed at vocational licence holders.
Within the first month we had our first case and it turned out to be a fellow founder member of the PDA known to us all.
Andy was a lorry driver and at 11am on a fine dry winters morning he had an unexplained accident. He ran off the road and hit a tree. The inquest has never found any reason for this.
However the firm he worked for didn't keep any record of his next of kin and he lived alone. He was taken to hospital and for the first 24 hours no family could be traced despite Andy having ICE in his phone. Unfortunately no-one checked it or it was confiscated to check if he had been using it at the time ( he hadn't).
Eventually his teenage son and daughter were traced and they had just 12 hours with him before he died.
The Professional Drivers Foundation helped the family but it was there wish that we develop some sort of means of identification to run alongside ICE ( In Case of Emergency) to try and prevent this happening to anyone else.
We have developed the PDF Next of Kin Card which is a laminated, credit card size document to be carried in your wallet or purse.
Details of how to get one free of charge can be found here www.pdafund.org/news.html .
I personally get a lot of pleasure and knowledge from these forums, and it occured to me that a lot of you do as many miles as we lorry drivers do. In view of this we would be happy to supply anyone with a NOK card and pass on advice about the use of ICE in your phone if needed.

As a person who used to run the personnel department for my employer (a small company) I made sure I obtained a next of kin contact for every person on the books - at minimum name, contact details and address if not the same.
Probably the best place would be at DVLC, provided people kept it up to date
hi everyone,
i have been having intermittent problems with my focus over the last couple of months, which now seem to be getting more frequent, and i wondered if anyone else has experienced this or got an ideas how to sort it out. when i turn the ignition on i get a message saying 'engine systems failure', this is swiftly followed by a message saying 'speed limit mode'. on tick over it idles at just over 1000rpm which fluctuates significantly, when trying to acclerate there is an extremely slow pull off, with a maximum speed of 20mph reached. i have usually be able to correct this by turning the engine off and restarting again after a couple of minutes, with the car running normally and no error messages displayed. however this is becoming more frequent now, and i dont fancy going to ford's to be charged an arm and a leg to fix something simple i could do myself. so if anyone has had the same problem or ideas how to sort it out i'd be very grateful.

Hi All,
Could I get an approx cost of a cam belt change for a Vauxhall Astra 2002 1.7DTi LS model.
Its done 101500 miles which is over the maximum spec for replacing the belt (i'm assuming its still on its first belt- nothing in the service history to say otherwise.)
I would imagine it would need the water pump doing at the same time.
Its my partners car, we don't have lot of money so want to make sure we aren't fleeced. Having a good idea of what it SHOULD cost as we ring around would be great. Read more
It's fairly straightforward - say £150-£200 top end.
No need to do the water pump as it's driven by the auxiliary belt.
I'd heard about tyre kickers but always assumed it was a joke and that they didn't really exist. Now I've seen one with my own eyes. He came out of our local supermarket, kicked one front tyre of his car and then kicked the other front tyre before he drove off. Honest! Read more
