Words fail me.. ( some of you will be pleased to know )

Unaware at 102 mph ?. Isn't that what the little dial with the numbers on in front of you is for ? Read more
Strange question but on the endura diesel engine with a lucas pump, is the engine pinned at tdc? if its is the is it on the firing stroke, IE top of the compression stroke so therefore the pump is pinned ready to fire as such?
Ive got an engine all timed up, the bottom end is pinned properly and is definatley at the top of number ones stroke, the pump is pinned on its marker and the cam is pinned level with a flat plate as it should be. But the cam looks to be coming onto the intake stroke. If this is the case and the pump is aboput to fire then it explains all problems with the engine.
IE a mismatch of head and bottom end, or at least camshaft and bottom end.

sorry, should of been more specifc, the engine wouldonly strat after 5 mins of cranking and then it would only run poorly as though the pump was too far advanced.
Ive solved the issue now, the cam timing was 180 degrees off, seems the cam didnt match the head. (its just had a new head put on).
I just bought a gorgeous MX5 - 58,000 miles and a Eunos model. The garage provides a 3 month warranty and I'm due for a full (unpaid) service next week. As I'm only eligible for a 3 month warranty, should I book an appointment with the AA for a thorough check-over so that I can provide the garage with a thorough shopping list of what requires fixing? Failing that, maybe take it to a Mazda dealer? What are your thoughts on the matter? Read more
good post ohsoslow
i can only add if the supplying trader/dealer isnt set up for repairing faults on his own premises but has given you his own warranty that means something, then why not pay $55 for a full safety check by your local friendly mot man
Just bought a Polo for my son, it has a flat spot comong off idle. It idles smooth and steady and once it's driving it's OK, it's the transition between the two. If you're careful with the throttle it will pull away with a bit of a stutter. If you try to pull away normally there's a giant flat spot and somethimes it will die. I think the fault has been here for a while as there's new plugs fuel and air filters. I'm thinking throttle switch, thought I'd best ask first as I'm more a points and carburettor man! Read more
Check for a split anti vibration carb mount. Common problem at that age. Regards Peter
I wrote this yesterday by the way, saved it, sent it, IE decided to have a mardy and crashed the page, and the saved words vanished?arrgh!
Anyway here goes again.
I?ve been waiting for a nice weekend as I wanted to replace the rear discs/pads on my MB 124, so midweek I ordered up the parts, checked they had arrived and yesterday morn whipped off one side so I had the parts for matching at the factors.
The handbrake shoes looked too grooved (by abrasive dust etc, they almost never get used on a moving drum unless you use the foot operated handbrake to clean them up occasionally) so I bought a set of those too.
As you would expect the discs/drums were simple and probably took 1 hour tops.
The shoes on the other hand caused much cursing and struggle, contortions needed to get in position to release and resecure the hold and return springs whilst also fitting them over the actuator mechanism?.all behind the rear hub which I didn?t want to disturb?as often Haynes turned out to be as much use as a chocolate teapot.
So it took me 2 hours just to remove and refit those blasted shoes, and I couldn?t have done the job without the high quality narrow long pincers SWMBO went to get for me, you have to remove/refit the securing springs through a hole slightly larger than a wheel bolt hole in the hub?much oathing during that part..;)
How I wished I hadn?t disturbed those shoes, but couldn?t bear the thought of leaving them inside new discs.
Elbows, knees, and many of my other parts now ache and I have numerous cuts and abrasions on hands.
Out of interest the parts came to £84 for Lockheed Delphi, so an economical job really.
What jobs do you remember that should have been simple but turned out to be long winded and frustrating.

NEVER EVER want to go near that evil underbody tray
again. an hour to get it back
on and even then half the clips fell out. >>
One trick i used when I had the Fiat Coupe and needed to replace the undertray was to secure one end loosely with plastic ties until I got a couple of bolts in the other end.The slack in the ties made positioning the tray a doddle. It did have an access flap for the sump plug and filter, but it was a swine of a job to get at the filter. This is why some owners fit a longer filter.
Why is it that no thought is given to real world driving whenever speed limits are implemented? I'm talking about the proposed 20mph limit the government wants to implement in its policy of continuous regression.
Why 20mph? how do you do that, then? Stay in second and use almost as much fuel as a '68 Charger or chug along in third and budget for a new DPF every few weeks? Why not 25mph? While we're at it, why not have 35mph, 45mph and 55mph (35 being a sensible urban speed that doesn't make you feel like you're standing still) and 55 instead of 50 will be better for fuel economy and the environment.
Just a thought... Read more
My car just dosn't like 20mph, I do 20mph in 2nd and I rev at 3000rpm, change into 3rd it does 1400rpm but pinks :(.
Hi there,
I got a good offer for these two cars. Both cars have pretty high mileage (134K for TD and 120K petrol). The price is the same for both.
What do you think which one will be more reliable to drive and cost me less in repairs?
Thanks in advance Read more
I've added the 6 to my consideration list, to replace the Omega.
Once you start reading about diesel problems, on far too many forums, you'll choose the petrol version!!

After a string of complaints with my 2003 Corsa (1.2 16v 34k), I swopped it for a 2000 Golf Cabriolet 1.8 in black. 60k one owner and FSH. Have I done the right thing?? (Yes I know its too late now!)
Any thought back roomers??? Read more
Yeah it might have been cheaper at the turn of the year, but It was a impulse buy I wasnt even looking to change! I just saw it and thought why not? Life is too short. Anyway I've driven in heavy rain today and its fine no leaks! Roll on the Sunshine!!!!!
Came across a paper by a French Traffic engineer titled :
Road speed colour coding and traffic speed control : an applied psychology approach ( ISSN 0041-0683 CODEN TENCA4 ).
Interesting points about the speed and ability to process information presented as numbers on a sign compared to the speed represented by a colored light/sign etc'
Sound like a good simple idea to me.
Discuss.

yes , how about painting the lamposts a different colour in a 20 zone
Just received a copy of a glossy magazine/brochure produced by my local Jaguar dealer; as well as an invitation to replace my XJ ;-)
One interesting article in there is about the fastest production model Jaguar, the record being set 17 years ago by Martin Brundle in an XJ 220 at 217.1mph.
On 12th Jan. 2009 an XFR with no changes other than a remapped ECU, modified intake and exhaust system, and revised supercharger settings achieved 225.675mph at Bonneville Salt Flats. Even the auto gearbox and ratios were standard.

Actually that XJ220 must have been the most disastrous Jaguar model ever. >>
I actually quite liked it..but thought it should have had the V12. The only thing is for me, the door mirrors were hopelessly out of context. They looked like they were an afterthought and someone had forgotten to design something, so they raided a coropoarte parts bin as 'make do'.
