hi.

im having some issues with my car. its had to be towed to a dealer to be fixed. upon looking at it, they state that a pipe has rubbed through and sheared off some bolts. they say it will need a new pipe and the pipe they need to replace is on the nearside and it is the one that feeds the fuel pump.

i dont have a problem with the diagnosis, but they were reluctant to answer my questions and i now have a bad feeling about it. they say it will take them 4 hours to fit the new pipe - cost £270 plus VAT and cost of parts will be £60.

can anyone tell me if they are trying to pull my leg with them saying it will cost 4 hours to fit, as i think it is a bit excessive.

phone around other ford dealers as i have a mondeo 2.0l 130 tdci and i needed a back box and one dealer said 2 hours to fit as he had to cut the pipe, one said a hour and the last one that did the job said 30 mins and only 45 pounds. it pays to shop around

Assuming you have power to the motor, then it's probably seized. Water gets down the spindle. Fairly easy to take apart and re-grease.

Does anyone know the torque settings for rocker cover bolts on the 3ltre straight 6 and should I use gasket seal when replacing the rocker cover gasket?

Thanks

Or, if you haven't got a torque wrench - not too tight.

Over-tightening causes some cam covers to distort, leading to leaks.

Make sure both surfaces are clean and smear some fresh engine oil on both before assembly.

It looks 6 cylinder and 24 valve to me - judging by the 4 x cam's at the top. Air con I guess via the big lump at the bottom left....

Any clues as to displacement / Turbo?

The car in the back ground might give the game away...
it says twin turbo on the window.
an ex-work mate had one 3000gt (uk) for 80,000 miles and sold it when the clutch was giving up. the front active spoiler (yep front and rear spoilers adjust at speed) got broken by a rabbit!!!
but apart from that, no major bills....
he said it was fun in the snow, with 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel steering and the power..
nutty....

I didn't have a good reason to post this under 'technical' but I just wondered if Backroomers think this is par for the course these days?
My pal has a two-year-old Discovery 3 that has done about 15k miles and has never been abused. A little while ago he noticed that the dashboard gear display, if that's the best way to describe it, was 'lagging' a bit - ie it was registering a gear change (say in or out of reverse) slightly after it happened. When the Disco went in for service last week he mentioned this and was told by the engineer that the clutch was slipping - although my pal couldn't feel anything amiss - and the answer is a new clutch and possibly a flywheel. The engineer said he would photograph the flywheel if it was scored and ask LR to pay. Presumably the clutch is covered by the guarantee?
Can this be right? My pal is an excellent driver who probably covers 50,000 miles a year (not with the Disco) running his business. How can a clutch and flywheel fail in 15k on a vehicle that - you might think - is designed to tolerate abuse?
Or is it the case that modern motoring means a trick dashboard display that reveals the shortcomings of the real engineering? Read more

I am told Disco 3 have had one or two issue's with premature clutch wear.

Having driven them i can undertsand why, first gear is very high for a heavy vehicle like this, and needs some careful driving to start without clutch slip.

Following a recent prang, I replaced my bonnet with one from a scrapyard. Unfortunately the colour doesn't match :(
So I'm looking I to source a colour-matched bonnet and a front bumper from a scrap yard. Do any of the big salvage yards offer a service where you can register colour details using the manufacturers colour code? Then, they ring you when one comes in.
It will save me phoning round the yards every week...
North of England preferred.

PS: Salvage bonnet cost me 50 quid. For respraying a bonnet, I have been quoted 230 quid. So, if I can find a colour match, that would be great.

Thanks. How much do these sites typically add on for finding the part?
Anyone used these part-finder sites?
Mike

From the breakeryard.com web site:
--------
Is there a charge for the service?

* If you elect to receive Email quotes, then the answer is NO, the service is completely free of charge. When compared to the convenience and the savings obtained by being able to compare quotes, text messaging is by far the fastest and most popular method chosen by Breakeryard.com users. If you opt for the convenience of having quotes text direct to your mobile, we will send you a maximum of 9 Text Quotes per request, the first 3 of which are charged at £1.50, followed by 6 further text quotes which are sent free of charge. When you offset this against the savings achieved when comparing the quotes themselves, you may find you will have saved anything between £10 to £1000 simply because of the difference in the prices!

Hi,
I see that the VAG parts website has closed down.

Does anyone know where I could order a control arm kit for an '99 Audi A4 1.9TDI?

Are the spurious ones as good as the original parts that the VAGPARTS.CO.UK website used to sell?

Always fancied a look at one of these, but many seem thrashed, and old/tatty

Specialist dealer recommended to me by a local owner of a nice coupe, has one of the last built in 2000, very very good condition, full specialist checkover, 1 year warranty from them, but £2K more than the next most expensive example on the market.

It is a 20V turbo. Absolutely full service history, inc new cam belt 10 miles back. Showroom condition, un-modified example.

Dealer is not local to me, so a long drive just to look at it, but I do have a local Fiat specialist mechanic who often has one or two of these in his garage being worked on.

Any ideas what it would cost to insure? group 20!

A car is worth exactly what your willing to pay for it. Specialist cars are valued as much on condition as actual book value - an example is a back in 2001 I sold my dads Honda Intergra Type-R - private sale book value was around the £10k mark - I got £12k in a private sale on account of its near perfect condition and exemplary service record which included a 4 wheel alignment, that on that car is a must - it showed the buyer my dad was serious about looking after it so they had the confidence that they werent buying a thrashed and uncared for smoker.

What you have to ask yourself is, if you buy a cheaper one, that isnt so perfect, will it have only £2k more in expenses needed over your ownership period. Sometimes its a false economy to buy a cheap example of what can be an expensive to run car and buying the very best to start with is often more sensible.

Hi,

Help wanted - Mechanical differences between 2.00 HDI 110 (RHZ) and 90 (RHY) engine.

My 03 Pug 307 2.00 HDI 110 has suffered a major failure. At least one inlet valve has failed (probably struck piston), the belt has slipped one notch and the cam surface is damaged on one inlet valve. I have removed the engine but not separated the head yet so not sure which order events occurred in. Main clue so far is cam belt was very slack, but within service interval)
I am finding it difficult to identify the mechanical differences between the 90 bhp (RHY) engine and the 110 bhp (RHZ) engine. I may change just the head or re engine from a breakers. The technical specifications in Haynes list only one set of mechanical specs for both engines, ie valve diameter, piston size etc. Can anyone advise on compatibility of engines, heads, blocks etc.

Any help much appreciated as I will need to buy soon, Thanks.

Hi,

I need a new head. Anyone know if there is any mechanical difference between the 90 and 110 2.00 HDI heads. Also if I decide to re engine instead is there any mechanical difference in the blocks (short engine)?

Thanks.

Hi all,

We are about to go through a complex family house move (selling 3 properties, buying 2), and have taken the decision to pick up a cheap estate hack to do tip runs, move large items etc. Having used a Volvo 940 for a similar purpose previously and been most impressed, this is our first choice (ruing ever having sold it actually). However, I'd also consider 740, 240 and 850. Going to see a nice sounding 850 this evening, but a little concerned that in the CBCB, HJ mentions that it's not as big as the previous Volvo wagons. Can anyone give a bit more of a quantification to this? As the main reason for buying this is the size (not driving dynamics etc), am I better off waiting to find a 940 or is the 850 still really big, just not quite as huge?

Many thanks in advance,

Alex.

PS not that interested in alternatives, but if anyone has a totally off the wall suggestion, I'm listening... Read more

i.e. it saved Volvo lots of money by not having to develop different engines across
the range.
