Took the wife and kids to Southwold yesterday for a paddle and an ice cream.

On route I saw countless classic cars, MG's, Rovers, Triumphs but the biggest surprise was a beautiful Aston Martin Lagonda in gun metal grey. I'de never seen one in the flesh before.
I pointed out to my wife it was quite a rare beast but she seemed totally uninterested, bless 'er! Read more

The reason for lots of classics on the road yesterday was because it was "Drive it day"

Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, is considering extending a £15 surcharge for victims to those handed on-the-spot fines and fixed penalties.

Currently the extra payment is only added on to fines handed out by the courts, but any extension to fixed penalties would pave the way for millions of people including speeding drivers to be hit as well.

Surcharge - no it is a Brown Tax - another one! Read more

BrianW

The legal principle on which the Victim Surcharge was introduced was to establish a fund from which to compensate victims of criminals where compensation would not otherwise be available.

E.g. a mugger gets £15 slapped on top of his sentence and that goes towards financial compensation for the person he mugged.

You simply cannot use the same justification for an addition to a speeding or parking fine. There is no victim to compensate.

It's a typical example of "mission creep" where a law introduced for one specific purpose e. g. the Terrorism Act, is then used for another e.g. fly tipping.

Hi, am just getting car back on road, have no manual with it, and have checked the fuses for front wipers, not sure what to check next. Can't think where relay is located or wiper motor housing, can anyone help as I didn't cover much electrical work on college course. Read more

Can anyone tell me where the relay is for the front wipers on the 205? Is it a green one usually on the top right of the fuse box by glove compartment? Wipers are not moving at all.

Hi All

Just wanted to ask for some opinions on this before I take action.
Just bought a two year old Peugeot 307 from a local garage. It had 21K on the clock and needed its 20,000 service. The garage said this would be done before I picked it up. 4 days later I got a call to say it was ready and picked it up last friday. At the weekend I checked the car over and found that nothing had been done, the oil was old and on minimum , air filter dirty and the oil filter had about 10,000 miles of dirt attached to it, spark plugs untouched.
Before phoning the garage up , anyone know what legal standing I have on this? As its only his word about the car being serviced before I collected can I still refuse the car in its condition. He has stamped the log book to say its been serviced.

Thanks alot

I do think that the garage should be given the opportunity to rectify...or at least
comment prior to reporting to trading standards.

I agree. It could be nothing worse than an administrative error. Before you do anything else, go back to the dealer and discuss it calmly and rationally.

on arriving at work this morning my wife has found the engine at the rear to be billowing steam, the engine seams to be running fine, no engine malfunction light either.but have been expieriencing a short loss of power when pulling off when first starting car over the last couple of weeks, acctually, it started after having new lambda sensor fitted, but goes fine after that.
when filling water up yesterday, i noticed some oil coming from the back of the head block, weve also had a small oil leak for some time, maybee from the sump, but oil levels are ok.
we had the lambda sensor replaced last week, new coil , leads, and sparks in jan due to missfire.
im hoping this may only be a hose thats gone, and not the head gasket.
any ideas on possible cause ????
thanks in advance

Hi I have a Mreg turbo diesel .It has a strange problem when starting .Some times it turns over and starts fine other times when the key is turned it just clicks after up to 6 trys it then starts as normal .I have changed the solinoid and swapped the battery (all be it a second hand one ) As the same problem exsisted with last battery .I am now wondering is it a duff battery or the starter is sticking any ideas ?.Are there any relays that might be breaking down in the circuit. It's getting a little worrying now as I never quite know if it will start.

Thanks Neil

Try connecting a lead from battery + to the small terminal on the starter, if that works OK the main supply to the starter maybe intermittently missing. I have had a problem with the lead from the batery not making contact with the terminal on the solonoid, even though the nut was tight, due to oxidisation, clean the surface of the tag and the bolt. If it doesn't work by touching the small terminal wit 12 volts but still clicks, its probably the brushes on the motor.

Hi,

Can anyone help?

I have a 106 1.5D 2000, 8/10 times it starts fine no problems, however recently a fault has started. When turning the key, wait till the coil light goes out, turn the key to start and then there is lots of clicking and the lights on the dash flash. Take the key out, try again and it either does this again a few times or it starts.

I assume the clicking is some sort of relay? Has anyone had similar problems?

Thanks Read more

My dads Fiesta did it, despite the battery seemingly being healthy (main beam worked etc) it just did not have enough ampage to turn the engine over. A new battery solved it.

Hi,

I was going to tackle changing the cambelt on my Renault Trafic 2.1 Diesel. I am no means a mechanic but have tackled most service aspects on my vehicles.

The one thing I can't suss out is where the locking pin goes.

Any tips or suggestions on changing cambelts - one of my worries is getting the tension correct. Is this guess work or is there an actual tool to use ?

Any warnings greatly appreciated !!! Read more

Intro.
It`generally accepted that `snake oil` is alive and well in America and the world over in `fuel additives`.
But what about UK engine oil and the thought processes that can cause a gravitation towards `cult` and away from logic?

The specs.
Some minor oil companies are `blenders` and as such would allegedly have less control of base stocks than major players with their own refineries. Given that ACEA specs seems linked with that - look very closely at the wording on the `cans`.

I mean closely, with a lawyers eye.

It`s long been accepted that the word `meets` is the only meaningfull term in the context of an oil spec and should be there on the can at the side of the spec.

It seems that `in accordance with` was the best that corporate lawyers would agree to - but that became generally rumbled as actually being meaningless as time went on.

Now it seems there is a new round of meaningless marketing jargon on cans of some blender only - very minor league oil companies - passed by company lawyers - that if it were human, would be a singing and dancing monologue - but without the word `meets` in the dictionary.

Funny word meets - it seems that if you put it on the can - your oil actually HAS to meet the spec...

Also look for outdated specs with `blenders` and contrast the general confidence when an oil such as Shell or Mobil 1 shows `meeting` specific engine manufacturers specs, such as MB.

The Human mind.
Speaking generally, I think that there is a vulnerability in the human psych (which must have had evolutionary advantage) for cults. in other words belief sytems. Its easy with exposure to be sucked in. The mind altered in its perception of what was once perhaps considered unacceptable - or more likely lacking insight and knowledge into its own nature.

Snake oil syndrome then - maybe ;-)

NB
You can just imagine a group of advertising bods sitting around a table with input from a Psychologist and a Lawyer - everthing from the shape of the can, to the last fullstop. Anything and everything to attract and get around the `meets` - that nasty little stick in the throat term that that major oil companies write so easily and clearly on the can.

I find it often cheaper to buy the manufacturers spec oil from a main dealer, I always ask for a discount, and if refused, (very rare), I go to another dealer.
