Hi,

I just bought mazda 6 05 reg and I think there is a problem with it. Not sure what can it be because it happens when it is warm outside. The symptoms are: between 1000 and 1500 rpm the car is stalling a little bit but when it is above or below those rpm it is fine. And the weird thing is as I motioned it happens when it is warmer. It is fine when I drive to work in the morning but when I come back them symptoms appear. I got appointment for computer diagnostics today not sure if it will show anything.

hi dazboot,...

I have a Mondeo 2L TDCi Zetec 04 plate. I've just been told the dual mass flywheel needs replacing - noisy when idle and getting much worse. I've googled and seen a reference to a Ford design fault where they scrimped on the 03/04 model - can anyone expand on this as I would like to take it up with Ford as after only 47k miles I'm not happy with a £1000 quote.

Would like to hear from anyone who has taken on Ford with DMF problems.... Read more

Read HJ's FAQ no.5 [FAQ tab is near top right], and follow his links to the DTI [now BERR] guides on SOGA ..

Following is NOT legal advice, but just my opinion.
In very general terms, SOGA allows SIX years from date of purchase to make a claim. In your shoes, I should either:
1. Join Which? and seek legal help from there. Or
2. Write to the garage I bought the car from to inform them that I was lodging a claim based on SOGA. Then depending on the response,
3. Get it repaired and submit a claim via the Small Claims Court. In the latter case, I should research and get evidence from an expert that the DMF is a latent design fault.

IMO, if enough people were to do this, the question of who is liable for DMF failures should be resolved for the benefit of the motoring public. I suspect that the Traders on this forum will disagree with me.

I was reading a report in the paper today that some pedestrian lights are being altered to give less time to pedestrians. ( Good idea, make 'em jump ! )

This jogged my memory about a set of lights at a crossroads locally. It is quite busy both ways on one road but less so on the other. When going away from home the lights give plenty of time to clear traffic, including a right turn arrow. Coming back, the lights are on green for precisely 6 seconds, leading to tailbacks, especially at 'school chucking out' time If there is a mimser at the head of the queue who doesn't realise that being in gear would be a good idea then only2 or 3 cars get across. Any other examples out there ?

The junction I referred to in my OP is at the Robin Hood Pub in Stretford. Strangely, the 6 seconds in busy daytime traffic becomes almost infinity at night when the road is quiet. When I spoke about the mimser at the head of the queue not being ready, I meant that they do not observe that the lights on the other road have gone to amber or that the traffic is stopping, at which point Mr Mimse should be making some attempt to prepare his car for onward motion. And why do Pelican crossing lights often change in favour of pedestrians when there is no-one around to press the button ?

Hi all, I've bought a Ford Focus sport 115 bhp 04 plate a few months back. Its now done 90k and since I bought it in December it has yet to impress me with fuel consumption. The car's had a full service, and has been driven easily with a mixture of town and motorway. Today I have done 430 miles on full tank 60 -70 mph all the way and it needs fuel again!! I think there might be a leak of sorts from underneath but only noticed wet patches underneath very occasionally.

What are the known faults with these engines? Is it likely to cost alot and worth getting rid of asap? My mechanic says he wouldn't know why MPG is so low (dont think his opinion is worth much based on this).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Read more

a work pal has a 1.8tdci & gets between 550-600 on a tank. Commutes 120 miles a day.

I recently bought a FIAT Punto with a broken head gasket and will be getting this looked at. However, I have been told there is a chance that the cylinder head may be cracked too. :(

When running, the car gives out a lot of white smoke from the exhaust, and the temperature gauge fluctates wildly, and after a while the red overheating light comes on.

How much would I be looking at if the head is cracked? :( Read more

Is it the 1.2 litre 60bhp / 75bhp engine? Failed head gasket is a common problem, it happened on ours too. It's possible the head is cracked but it's usually just the gasket. It's a straightforward job, get the cambelt done at the same time.

You or your repairer should be able to source a good used head from a reclaimers. It's also possible to get the damaged head welded, there are specialist engineering shops will do this for you.

Failed MOT, rear sub-frame has excessive play, bushes need replacing. Does anyone know the best and easiest way to replace them for DIY and which are the best bushes to use? Read more

kithmo

Easiest to DIY and best lasting bushes are the Powerflex Poly bushes. You can fit them without removing the subframe or even the wheels if you put the car on ramps. Hardest part is removing the rubber remnants of the old bush, but if yours are bad enough to fail the MOT then they will probably fall out.
See the ford mondeo enthusiast website forums for a how-to.
If you prefer to fit the Genuine Ford ones and you have to remove the subframe you can buy Genuine New Ford Subframes on Ebay for circa £150.
The Powerflex bushes are a fit and forget job whereas the Ford ones will want renewing again in 60k miles.

My father-in-law has asked my to post a question on his behalf. He wondered if anyone has some insight into a problem with his 2001 BMW 525i (Automatic). The ABS light keeps coming on. Sometimes it stays on, sometimes it goes off and comes back on and sometimes it behaves i.e. goes off and stays off.

The independent garage he uses has replaced the sensor (?) with no luck - same problem as before.

Does anyone have any experience of this behaviour that could guide him to a fix?

Many thanks Read more

hm

what does the ECU say? (the garage should have plugged her in...).....As a guess IF they did then it would say right front and or right rear sensor fault......so I'm betting they replaced them and you still have the issue.....

I'm also betting the speedo works fine and the cruise control also work (when the ABS light is off).....

I would put GOOD money on it being the ABS ECU.. VERY common failure on earlier E39 models.... I would stongly recommend you whip her off and get it tested (should cost about £25.... if she is nackered then £150 to get it refurbed....

do a good search for ECU testing there is a place in Nottingham.. very fast turn around (you can still drive the motor without an ABS ECU) you would just have no speedo, no ABS or traction control. The company also advertise in Ebay...

Ladies and Gents,
I've just discovered the cause of the oily patches on my drive.
We have a very slight hole in the bottom of our car's sump.
Does anybody know if there is a product on the market that we can use to patch the sump, rather than replacing it ?
Thanks. Read more

It's an alloy sump on this engine. I wonder what the undertray is like?

Ok, here's something i've pondered on for a while, just wondered whether anyone here could enlighten me on it (maybe even Mr Honest John himself?!).

How will the U.K registration number scheme adapt to the fact that 2010 will mean an extra digit on every numberplate, bringing it from 7 to 8 digits.

Will every plate get slightly bigger, or will the digits get slightly smaller? I'm curious to know!

I'm thinking 010 then 510 - a return to three numerals. I haven't seen anything official on this subject though - does anyone know?

Have a 2002 Neon R/T manual, 79,000 miles just started to hold back slightly, same as when a plug breaks down or i was thinking maybe coil pack? if you accelerate it is smooth as silk and at anything above say 45 / 50 mph, but at steady 30mph it is a bit jerky and holds back slightly? any one else had this problem? Thanks. Read more
