Hi

Girlfriend's diesel corsa has developed an offside inner CV joint knock. There's a bit of free play and the noise has gradually been getting worse over the weekend. Above 30 it will now vibrate the steering wheel when off load.

She needs the car before next weekend, when I can do the work. My question is will it be OK before then (about 4 miles into work, then back, each day)? Are they prone to complete failure of drive? I've told her to keep off the right foot and take it easy speed wise.

Thanks. Read more

Sure its not gearbox/diff ?

I'm pretty sure I checked the other side and that was OK. I can't be 100% that it's not the diff. that's gone, but the failure has been rather sudden. There is no fluid loss which I imagine would be present with a diff. failure of this magnitude.

Having smugly watched the previous thread regarding browser freezing on access to this site -having had no problems at all - I am now experiencing some delays this pm.

FF 3.0.5, + XP ISP BT causing no other problems

Reading the status bar at the bottom it would appear to be something to do with delays at "www.google-analytics.com". Have Khoo made some changes to the statistics gathering capabilty - or is it that I have never had time to read the status bar before?

Problem is back again today - and worse.

Major delay when either refreshing 'index' page of a specific forum. The common elements load (ie top of page) ok most times but the listing of topics is either delayed by 5-10 s (or sometimes for ever)!

Going to a specific topic is fast, but going to 'index' page is very slow.

Can i have any views on possible actions following the rather annoying experience i've had yesterday. Very simple summary:

Saturday morning. Idiot in M reg Discovery comes into my street looking for his ex-girlfriend, who is visiting our neighbour two doors down. Idiot hammers on door, neighbour refuses to let him in. Idiot "knows" that ex GF is in because her car is outside and Neighbour's son's car is outside (he used to have a blue Impreza, but an 06 GB270, not a '55 wagon. Idiot gets into Discovery, shunts ex GF's car up the back, reverses into my Impreza )presumably thinking he belongs to Neighbour's son) and shoots off.

i hear bang, alarm, get outside in dressing gown to see Discovery disappearing. While wondering what to do, Idiot comes back past and i get his plate. His ex GF gives his name and the name of the business (car maintenance related) he runs.

I get dressed, inspect car - scuffed and gouged bumper, smashed number plate. Surprising given force of the shunt. He managed to push the Impreza back into our other car, luckily no obvious damage to that one. I did pull out a bit of his tow hitch from my bumper though.

Report incident to police on non emergency number. They refer me to local Police Station. I take docs etc to police station and report incident, including giving them plate of Discovery and guy's name. This is now passed onto Collisions Unit who work Monday to Friday.

Did a ASKMID and vehicle is not listed as being insured. Given Idiot runs a motor trade business, i suspect that's fleet insurance or something. Let's give the benefit of the doubt for now.

Do a Company House search on business and identify Idiot's proper name and address. Snoop around the house, and find Discovery at the rear. Report this to the Police as well, who thank me, but i'm not aware what's happened from that.

Insurance are happy for me to claim and it'll be a non fault as the car was unattended at the time. The bit that really annoys me (and the reason i'm not progressing with the claim at the moment) is that i have to pay my £350 excess and i'm not 100% confident that I'll get it back.

As i see it, this guy's done two lots of malicious damage aimed at ex GF and the neighbour in the mistaken belief my car belonged to that house. If the car was older and i hadn't seen him, I'd replace the number plate and move on. The damage isn't that bad, but to get it back needs a new bumper in my humble non technical mind. But the car is '55 reg and i love it. Why should i suffer because of this guy's idiocy?

I'm going to call Collisions Unit tomorrow and try and get an update. Also update them. From what them that know tell me locally, the Idiot in question is a complete wossit, so I'm not proposing to visit his house and attempt a reasoned debate on this. I'm thinking more along the lines of a letter requiring his insurance details and failing that, going ahead with the repair and issuing a small court claim for the excess and my out of pocket expenses (new number plates, parking next to the police station, my time etc). But i don't know when the best time to do this is - do i leave it until / if the police get somewhere and it adds weight to my civil claim, or just ask for the insurance anyway?

Outcome i'm looking for is to get my car back to how it was before he hit it. I'm certainly not looking to get involved in his love life, but i'm happy about being out of pocket.

All thoughts / pointers / other experiences welcome.

Good story, mare - I hope it all works out. The difficult thing to allow for is the possibility that someone who behaves as described, if taken to court and seriously dealt with, may decide to repeat the offence to your car (or worse, house), making sure there are no witnesses or evidence next time.

Hope not.

Hi Guys
My 2007 CRV has 18000 miles on the clock it has only been used as a family vehicle, never raced never been off road (boring really).
My concern is when checking the tyres I found 3 of them are wearing normally and evenly but the rear near side tyre outer 30% of the tread is worn down to the wear bar
All the pressures are checked on occasions and always found to be ok.
Any ideas? Read more

Thanks for that bsm, I'll ring Honda tomorrow and see what excuse they come up with.

occasionally the auto transmission warning comes on when driving, it's happened a few times (6 or 7?) over the last couple of months, generally on the coldest days.

If we stop the car, turn off engine, then restart, then the light goes out and all is well. So we kind of assumed it might be a sensor fault, rather than a transmission fault itself, and promised that we'd get our lovely, efficient independant garage chap to have a look when it goes in for it's next service (which will be 50,000 miles, due in a month or so).

Today (another really cold one) there was a rather nasty clunk just before the warning light came on. Once again, stopped and started the car, no warning light, so completed the outbound journey without any other event. Starting the car again after 2 hours parked, warning light was on. Stopped and restarted, no warning light, travelled home (about 12 miles) with no problem.

I'm worrying now tho'. Do you think we're in for a big problem? I'm going to book it in ASAP, but have essential use tomorrow .... Read more

Hi,

I have a Peugeot 306 1.6 LX 99 T reg. I went to start it today, it was started ok and i put the lights, wipers, rear window heat etc on, after about 6-7 seconds the front light lights flicked on and off then there was a sudden loss of power, all lights on the dash went out and the engine completely died, i tried to start it again but it just keeps turning over without firing.

After trying a couple of times i noticed a clicking noise coming from the engine, so i had a look to see if there was anything under the bonnet. The clicking continued and then stopped and now only come on when either the door is left open or it is trying to be started, there is also an odd smell on the inside of the car, almost like a burning.

Now i called my breakdown company and the chap came out had a look at it for about 10 seconds, said it looked like a problem with a relay and told me to take it a garage. Thats fine, however im really not very technical when it comes to cars and was wondering if anyone could give me any more information or if anyone has had the same problem and how it was fixed/price etc?

Thanks

Also in the Mail on Sunday, The Chief Constable of North Wales, RB, is suggesting that cars involved in fatal accidents are removed from the scene with the bodies still inside.
Apparently this would clear the road for fraffic a lot faster. I know if I was a recovery operator now I don't think I would be very happy with this.

For someone not to want justice or an explanation why a family member or loved one ended up dead in a RTC is totally cold hearted and a no brainer.

most people see things completely differently when it's their own...an understandable human trait....but nevertheless an irritating one when their view is usually opposed to something

personal grief somewhat focuses the mind doesn't it ...trouble is at one end of the spectrum it puts things into perpsective, but at the other it clouds your judgement

Any advice welcome on the best tyres for the CRV?

We will be towing a caravan but road noise is something we don't want.

It currently has Bridgestone Duellers fitted and holds the road well.

Can anyone tell me (or point me to a thread or website) how speed limits are set, please? I'm thinking more about the local process rather then the national limits; particularly roads that carry a 30 mph limit where that seems unreasonably low. Specifically, is someone with relevant technical knowledge involved, or is it decided by 'other factors'? Thanks. Read more

Second HJ's post about H'Court to Kingston. There is an example of illogical road management likely to lead to frustration if ever there was one. Safety cameras continue to be located where they shouldn't be and omitted from where they'd do some good.
