Afternoon all,
I was just wondering about the complexity of retro-fitting CC + PDC on my Mk V Golf 2.0TDI GT. Having had both on my previous few cars, and using them regularly when driving the pool cars at work, i really miss not having them on my car.
There are several "kits" on ebay that claim to be VW parts, which look to be effectively a new indicator stalk, with the associated buttons/switches on.
I had a 1991 BMW 730i for a short period, and the previous owner had fitted Cruise himself, and told me it was as easy as installing the new stalk, and plugging it into the ECU under the steerign wheel.
So my question is, how easy would it be to do on my car, and is it worth the hassle?
Thanks

Anyone know how to tell if my 04 Zetec-S TDCI has the loom fitted for heated seats?
It had the one for the footwell lights - just needed to add the bulbs.
TIA

Thanks for that, I'll have a look.
I guess I was hoping someone would say look for a set of cables under the left hand side of the seat (or soemthing like that)
Britain in a nut shell. Don't drivers have enough to contend with. Why didn't some one phone the law as soon as this stupidity started. What's the difference between this and say for instance, putting objects on a railway line ?
'Youngsters had been pelting at cars for hours in a park' Yeah, what a laugh until a car skids out of control and kills some innocent on the pavement.
'A SNOWBALL fight turned ugly yesterday when an angry driver threatened kids with a knife.
Youngsters had been pelting at cars for hours in a park. But one driver took the law into his own hands, when one too many balls landed on his van.
The unnamed man, wearing a fluorescent jacket and beanie cap leapt out with a roar ? brandishing what looked like a Stanley knife near Alexandra Palace, in Muswell Hill, North London.
One onlooker said: ?It was absolutely mental, every car that came round the corner was absolutely pelted with snowballs.
"It had been going on for several hours, and lots of drivers had shouted at the kids.
?Some wound their windows down to have a go, but that just made them throw more. But then this guy stopped his van, got out and started shouting at them, waving this knife. He was clearly very annoyed.
?Suddenly it all went very quiet, and unsurprisingly they stopped throwing snowballs.
?He only walked off after the cars stuck behind him started beeping at him, telling him to move on.

?I think he was calling the police ? he?d clearly just had enough.?
A schoolboy was arrested.'

As all the interesting discussion points which can possibly be made have now been made and discussed, probably at least twice, and we're heading back towards name-calling, I've locked this.
I predict the snow will melt, at about the same time as this thread drops off the front page. I'm sure we can find something else to fret over then. :-)
The complexity of replacing headlights on many renaults has been discussed here before.
I had a headlight replaced on my megane last december at a cost of £50. The bulb on the other side has just gone, so I rang the dealer to check the price, only to be told headlights are now covered by warranty, so it's booked in to get it done for nowt - no chance of getting the other £50 back though.
No reason to mess about trying to change them yourself any more - or for driving round with one light out ! Read more
In my case its the bulb, but I wouldn't consider the unit to be a 'non-warranty' item anyway.
esitmated time to replace bulb - 1/2 -> 3/4 hour !!!!
The rear seat belts in my daughter's Micra lock up when passengers use them. They pull out OK, but once the car's in motion they'll lock. As the car goes over bumps and round corners, each movement of the passenger that allows the belt to tighten locks the belt in that position, with the belt gradually locking tighter and tighter. With the car then stationary, no amount of careful movement allows the belt to be pulled out any more. The only way to get any slack, is to release the buckle, allow the belt to fully retract and then pull it out again.
It's not a dangerous fault, in fact I suppose it makes it makes it safer as the belt is very tight, just damn uncomfortable. It's not been noticed before, but suddenly seems to have affected both rear inertia belts simultaneously. There's no obvious reason, obstructions etc. that I can see.
Has anyone come across this type of problem before, or know it's cure? Read more
my micra has the same problem, iv sprayed mine using the straw with wd40 & they are a lot better, you can take the mechanism off & spray into the little holes. you may get a little on the seatbelt but its better than being strangled! hope this helps!
I purchased some Michelin PS2 tyres thru a well known internet retailer, and then had a local garage fit them. The initial balance was so far out the car was almost undriveable, and they sent me to a local tyre specialist to get them sorted.
The first three times they balanced them, the weights fell off within yards. They eventually did it a completely different way with stick on weights. Although it wasn't bad, it wasn't right either, with mild vibrations at motorway speeds.
Because of work pressure, and because it was relatively minor, it was about 5k miles before I got to go back. Another three attempts, and I thought that they had sorted it.
But. 300 miles later, and with the car having sat parked at Heathrow for 10 days, the vibrations are back. But I'm not sure it's consistent - I get the impression that it's stronger at times. I'm getting paranoid. Can it really be wheel balance that's the problem? Should I be looking for something else? On the other hand, it was smooth as silk until I had the new tyres put on, and has been a problem ever since.
Suggestions for what I should try? My gut is to try a different garage first for rebalance, and if that doesn't work, replace the front tyres (keeping the current ones) so see if a tyre problem.
Any thoughts on what I should try? Read more
My Honda accord was the same three attempts to balance the front wheels with the new tyres problem cured when we balanced the rear wheels.
It has happened a few times whilst i've had the car, usually at night when its not yet warmed. It usually happens, if it does, coming up to roundabouts when braking from 60-70 mph, but not hard. I brake smoothly, put the clutch down when the revs are getting towards 1200-1300 RPM but it still stalls.
Any idea's what it could be? Read more
Probably clutch switch not working or activating. Suggest investigate that first, then if nothing obvious, get a code read.
I'm looking for advice on how many coats and primer (i'm thinking 2) and then top coats of tonic blue paint would be needed for a professional job? Also is lacquer worth adding over the top.
Thanks Read more
4/5 yr old car ? - It should still be a good looking car - get "chips away" or similar to do the job. It might be £120+ but at least it will be a professional job - home sprayed from aerosol might take £££s off the value.
Please can someone advise how long the glowplugs should stay on for at cold start?
Hubby's Corsa has been a pig to start from cold for a while, but this morning with the sudden cold temperatures, it flatly refused. We checked the glowplugs and all are OK, but they do not stay on for long. At switch on, they are glowing hot by 5 seconds, but the relay switches them off at about 8 seconds, so you only have an optimum 3 second period to start it.
My Astra glowplug circuit stays on for about 30 seconds before the relay can be heard to click off.
We changed the relay in the Corsa, but it is no different. Could it be the timer (green box behind drivers footwell kickpanel)? Also found reference to the engine temperature sensor which controls the timer - where would we find this and how to we check it.
All advice much appreciated.
Thanks! Read more
the glow plug circuit on these are a bit perculiar they glow as normal then once the vehicle has started they have whats called after glow for anything up to a minuite depending on alternator output or road speed that said they can be a bit of a mare to diagnose but agree with previous post about valve clearances poor compresion is the most likely or you have one or more glow plugs that have gone open circuit

No they don't care and I'd argue they are probably brain dead. Saw a woman this morning descending a snow covered road (I'd not gone up it to avoid getting stuck), approaching a T junction, outside a school which was open, texting away as she tried to keep control of the car. If I hadn't been carrying my daughter it would have been difficult for me not to go over and say something.
Similarly the 4x4 driver who cleared just the drivers side of his windscreen - about a brush width and then drove off with 4 inches of snow on the rest of the car.

I'd venture to a website that could really answer your question and that is www.uk-mkivs.net where they know everything about VW's and related cars
