IN yesterday's DT Money section the following advice was given to drivers invoved in an accident.
"Do not give your name and address to the other driver. Just supply insurance company details and the policy number."
I always though that you were legally obliged to give your name and address.
Is the advice correct?

I am driving up to Scotland early on Tuesday morning and when I usually go up this early (I leave Manchester at about 6:15am) I stop off at the Abington services for breakfast.
Can anyone recommend somewhere else just off the M74 that is simply better and less plastic/expensive?
Also, will be coming down the M74 at about 6pm that evening - any suggestions for a light early supper?
Thanks
PS Unlikely to be logging back on until late Monday night, so apologies in advance if I do not respond to queries. Read more

Hi
I'm needing to buy some new diff. bearings for the corsa. I'm stuck between SKF at about £16 per throw online and ZVL/ZKL bearings at £6 a throw.
Being such a large price difference, I'm worried that the ZVL/ZKL bearings will be of poor quality and will break down quickly. Am I right to be worried, or have backroomers heard of and used this manufacturer successfully? Read more
The other Czech makes may be ok-Cechoslovakia has a very good long standing engineering heritage.
They did provide the machinery for the London Eye, and that's still going!...
Hi
I've had my car for 18 months and no problems until before Christmas. I started to notice that when I changed up a gear (for example 3rd to 4th in particular) the engine was over revving but not fully engaging. I've had a new clutch and the problem is still there. This problem is intermittent.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks Clewsy - this is really helpful. I've booked the car into my local ford dealership so that they can run diagnostics... They too think that it is the sensor. If it is the ECU, is it an expensive job to get it reprogrammed?
Many thanks again

anybody experienced water leaks into the footwell, both sides front, I put grease aound the seal and it appears to be water tight, water is shown over the rubber at the front base of the door. Rod Read more
It may well be worth taking off the door cards and checking the seal around the door membrane to see if there is any sign of a gap which would allow water in.Has been known before on 2001 mondeos
End Nov after 140 motorway miles, engine stuttered badly as revs fell in built up area with roundabouts and junctions etc.
Since then has been sometimes difficult to start on v.cold or damp mornings - rev counter spins to max as engine is trying to catch and temperature flips to fahrenheit and trip milometer resets. I've always got it started within 60 secs of trying. Car will stutter at 2000rpm and then I'm up to motorway speeds as it is dual carriageway in every direction from home, and it seems ok. Though even when warm it's not immume to this stuttering.
Garage plugged it into the diagnostic computer and found nothing wrong, but they changed plugs and ht leads and put something in to clean the valves. This didn't fix it.
Car is 02 and has 97k miles. Pattern of usage changed about 1 year ago and car now gets a few journeys per week of approx. 10 miles and the occasional longer run.
It's quite possible that my garage has never seen exactly this before - but quite likely that someone else out there has had this problem. Read more
Being a relatively new driver, It is hard for me to gauge how things have changed over my lifetime as 17 of those years were as a passenger. The other day I was watching a 'road wars' type programme from the early 90's and for me it was quite interesting to see the subtle changes over today's roads. There was a noticeable lack of traffic calming measures and general road furniture in urban areas, cycle and bus lanes also seemed to be a much rarer sight. Traffic also appeared to be considerably lighter.
It led me to conclude that life for the motorist has, by and large, gotten worse over the past 20 years. I wonder what the older generation feel was, all things considered, the best era for motoring. I think that the greater trouble today is the negativity and lack of optimism, enthusiasm for motoring is definitely waning. All we hear are dreary environmentalists condemning the car and politicians acting on their wishes. Any road building proposals are met with outrage, car manufacturers are stifled by regulations that stifle innovation. Traffic calming this, anti-car that......etc. etc.
I am fully aware that motoring in the 50's and 60's wasn't that great either. Cars were truly awful by today's standards and the number of fatalities were shocking when you take traffic density into account. However, I get the impression that there was a greater sense of optimism and enthusiasm in those days. It was the dawn of the motorway age, people were getting wealthier and looking forward to a mobile and independent future. With interesting advances in automotive engineering there would have been little doubt in most people's minds things were looking up as they had much more freedom to enjoy their cars. Read more
...... if you put your foot
down at 70 in a Triumph 2000 it would accelerate up to 100.
I did say "lucky (or rich)". I didn't own anything which would maintain 70 until long after the introduction of the 70 limit, so for me the limit was academic for quite a few years.
This amused me, but it just might have some value:

>>What about the other 6 days of the week? Pointless.??
In our area, it's every fortnight for household rubbish with garden waste in between.
However, the point does seem to have been missed by most people that wheelie bins are emptied in most towns and cities over the course of a week - so each day a large proportion of the streets and roads would have the signs on display.

Dial 999, ask for police.
give location, state you suspect someone of drink driving right now, give their vehicle details and direction they are heading.
you will be asked why you suspect this - give reasons - they bumped into you, very quick to give details and drive away, this also makes you wonder if the details given are correct...
This will ensure a police response (assuming there are any free units)
