ZVL or ZKL bearings - good quality? - mfarrow
Hi

I'm needing to buy some new diff. bearings for the corsa. I'm stuck between SKF at about £16 per throw online and ZVL/ZKL bearings at £6 a throw.

Being such a large price difference, I'm worried that the ZVL/ZKL bearings will be of poor quality and will break down quickly. Am I right to be worried, or have backroomers heard of and used this manufacturer successfully?

Appears to be Czech / Slovakian www.zklbearings.com/index.html Is £10 such a big difference in relation to the damage a duff bearing will do?

If it was me, I'd be using SKF. At least you have a UK base to contact if you have any problems. SKF are a world renown bearing manufacturer..... ZVL are who???

I rest my case.

And where are the SKF ones made?

SKF have factories in many countries including Sweden. I have found their products to be of the very highest quality.

659.

Thanks for the replies.

I have bought Koyos in the end, as they were more expensive, available, and seem an established make.

The originals were FAG.

IIRC the only difference between bearing codes, was whether they were case hardened, or through hardened.

The preference for wheel bearings being case hardened. Perhaps someone 'in the know' could enlighten us all?

Hi there,

case hardened bearings would be the way to go, wheel bearings take a beating from vibration and shock due to road conditions. case hardened bearing has a hardened outer layer and a soft core which allows the bearing to absorb a lot of the shock and vibration given that it baheves like a cushion for a lack of better words. All USA domestic car manufacturers use Timken roler bearings, Timken only makes case hardened tapered roller bearings and they are also one of the best tapered roller bearing brands.

hope that helps

But SKFs arrived. I'm not complaining!

SKF+TOYO+FAG+TIMKEN = All well known manufacturers of bearings for many years - I have used all of these makes over the years and they have been entirely satisfactory.

The other Czech makes may be ok-Cechoslovakia has a very good long standing

engineering heritage.

They did provide the machinery for the London Eye, and that's still going!
