1999 1.8 TDi Over revving problem - Eve09
Hi

I've had my car for 18 months and no problems until before Christmas. I started to notice that when I changed up a gear (for example 3rd to 4th in particular) the engine was over revving but not fully engaging. I've had a new clutch and the problem is still there. This problem is intermittent.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

could possibly be the speed sensor or a ecu fault. it could be worth having the ECU re-programmed as it is a common thing with focus. I have a 1.8 petrol and had simular problems and mine was a speed sensor. Has all the cam belt etc been done as well? also was it a full clutch system?. If it wasnt and they put a 2 peice set the revving may be there as maybe the bearing and slave needs replacing. also as a bit of a long shot make sure they have put the right one on as 1.8tdi and 2.0tdi focus have a different gearbox to the others. they have an MTX gearbox which is different from the standard IB5.

Thanks Clewsy - this is really helpful. I've booked the car into my local ford dealership so that they can run diagnostics... They too think that it is the sensor. If it is the ECU, is it an expensive job to get it reprogrammed?

Many thanks again
