Junction 23 of M6 where it joins A580 - east lancs road.

Large and complex roundabout. The traffic lights there seem very peculiar. If you watch the sequence, for some reason, when one set goes amber before going red, the other set goes amber at the SAME time almost, so both sets are momentarily on amber at the same time.

You get some high speeds there and the usual "amber gamblers" (showing my age). I know it so am aware of the risks but plenty of times as I get a green light I will get someone speeding across my bows.

It's also one of those roundabouts that you can go straight through if you' dont need the mway, only having to go round if you want to go north/south. But people forget and try to turn right onto the M6 after missing the ramp so in effect are stationary in the fast lane of a dual carriegeway. man, you got to stay awake there. Read more

Haydock Island - big junction, 3/4 lane roundabout with traffic lights, and a dual carriageway running straight through it

>>as I get a green light I will get someone speeding across my bows.

actually, you are probably very right on that one.

It's a junction where everybody takes liberties. Here's how to sort it. You know those road signs that say '21 casualties on this road in the past 5 years' ?
You put one of those up on each entrance with the number of drivers fined - then you put cameras on each set of lights, and speed cameras on the A580 as well, then you impose a zero tolerance policy.
Of course, the sign would have to be a big LED with lots of digits, because the numbers will be going up like the numbers on the pump when your filling up with BP diesel extra

Buying new rear tyres for the car 205/55/16 Now iam thinking of Goodyear Exelence as recommended by so many of you on past posts but my question is ,the speed rating on the tyres eg H , V or W .Is there a difference in comfort or noise levels with the different ratings, on the said tyres the W rated tyre is only about £9 more expensive than the H rated tyre, and as i wont be reaching any of the W rated speeds or loading (and i assume that maybe the W rated tyres are made thicker?stronger?) would i get better comfort driving and less road noise in a lesser speed rated tyre or would it not be noticable .
If i will get better noise insulation and comfort on any tyre on any speed rating please forward your thoughts

Just got a plug core replaced as steam was coming from the engine. A pinhole was found in it. There still seems to be some steam coming through the grid on the bonnet. Could be possibly caused by the cold weather. Any thoughts ?

Possibly there is residual coolant on the engine from the core plug being changed?

I would open the bonnet and try to see where it is coming from. And as said keep a close eye on coolant levels.

my car has started making a clicking noise from the drivers wheel once i reach speeds over 40mph,the noise cannot be heard once window is down although i think this is due to wind noise and the clicking noise seems to be traveling through the car body.I have checked all bushes & brakes, everything seems ok. has anyone had similar problem? Getting rid of my now rickety Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 2001 Y plate 89000miles, Ford Dealer offering me a Ford Fusion 2005 1.4 TDCi 05 plate for £4000 cash plus my old Focus as a trade in. He started with a £6000 ticket for the fusion.

The fusion is a lovely and clean model with lots of added extras including a overhead DVD system for the backseats, 12 months ford protect warranty and only £35 road tax!!! It appears on paper (well through Parkers) to be a great deal... is it? Read more

Fusions are well over priced looking at RRP, talking to someone on Friday (Ford connected company) he has the option to buy is lease car for £7100. Its
£7100 for a Zetec Climate Fusion 1.6 Diesel @ 4 months old with 6k on the clock.

If you can get one cheap then they are a fine car (bar the lack of a clutch rest) but there are better options out there.

I've got my Grandfather's old focus that's needing a few pounds spent on it. It's due a major service (cam-belt) anyway but I'd like to go a bit further to get the best from it. It's a 2001 1.8 zetec with just 12k on the clock.

I don't want to spend thousands, just a few small changes that should add up to make a marked improvement. Work to be carried out at indy garage. Any advice or suggestions would be very welcome. Ideas:

Wheels & tyres- Upgrade to 16'' from 15'' buying used set on eBay (Ford parts). Tyres need replacing anyway as they are all original.
Brakes- Order good quality discs & pads on net, garage to fit. Only drums on rear, replace if need be.
Suspension- Upgrade springs & dampers? Too expensive/worth the bother? Advice please.

Any other tips on how to get this car back to its best, it has been sitting around for years doing nothing but short runs. Anything that can be done in the engine dept? Is it best to order the parts I can on the net for the service too? Loads available from sellers on eBay.

The other modification I would make is to upgrade the headlamp bulbs and the front sidelight bulbs.
Get some legal Osram Silver Stars and some W5W Philips Blue vision Ultra sidelight bulbs.
The W5W bulbs are much brighter and give a white light rather than the dull "standard" candle light.
Looks much nicer and does not cost too much.

And of course the standard advice ( assuming you do have two keys.)
Get a third key as an insurance. Might save £100+ if you loose one of the exiisting keys.

Will the headlamp units from a face-lifted mk1 focus (01-04) fit the earlier 98-01 car? Would it be possible for a garage to do the job? I know the new ones have incorporated indicators but these could be left unconnected.

The reason I'm asking is that there is a pair lumped in with a set of new wheels I'm thinking of buying. Also, they have a separate main beam lamp for superior night time vision. Read more

Make sure the radius is the same, or your speedo and trip will be wrong see link

.
when i changed my 16" mondeo wheels (mk3 mondeo LX with steel wheels)
to 17" alloys from a ghia model (bought from a ford breakers, the wheels and tyres where cheaper than buying new 16" tyres for my steels wheels. and yes they looked nicer...)
.
my insurance company told me even though they where still ford alloys and standard fit on a ghia model they where not standard fit to an LX and would load me 10% for the pleasure.....
.
Paul.
I remember when the xr2i and xr3i where being made with steel wheels and wheel trims but most owners went for the optional alloys, how many 2nd hand owners declaired those as options,,,as technically they where not fitted as standard. but not many where sold without alloys...

When I start my 1.8 zetec E petrol engine t8k miles first thing when it is cold weather I notice a rattly/tapping noise that disappears after a couple of minutes or so.

Is this normal ?

Going by all your other post's your very paranoid, the car is nearly 10 yrs old and done 78k miles it is not going to sound and drive like the day it left the production line.Until it really starts to rattle and becomes noisey all the time just drive it and enjoy it.My focus is half the age of yours and done 7k less it makes a quite rattling noise first thing until warmed up am i concerned no.

stunorthants26

Now its run up to a shade under 37k and ive owned it 10 months - Im doing more miles in it than I thought and most likely far more than the average Charade owner judging by the 25k my car had on it at 4.5 years old.

Am I still happy with it? On the whole yes. Given the miles I do in it and the use as a work vehicle to carry equipment, something Im sure its makers never intended.
It copes extremely well and when I had a Fiesta loan car while mine was in the dealer, I realised just how much interior space they squeezed out of the tiny dimensions compared to the Fiesta which struggled to fit the same kit with the seats folded - infact it didnt and I had to put stuff both in the front footwell and on front seat, something that I dont have to in the Daijit.
The gearbox is a bit noisey but I think that when it has its 6th year service and its first gearbox oil change, this should certainly quieten it down so Im waiting to see how that effects it. Its not irritating, you just become aware of it.

Running costs. I pay £24 a month to insure it which I think is just fine, road tax is the ever useful £35 a year and buying that Im sure will never get old, its a guilty pleasure for a penny pincher. Economy has stuck around the 57-61 mpg mark on ordinary UL which to my mind compares well with even the newest city cars and it is easily attainable. The lack of weight seems to mean that even on light throttle, it flies up hills and even making reasonable progress never feels like it is being pushed which Im sure helps towards the real life economy.
Maintainance has been limited to a Cambelt on its 5th birthday using genuine Daihatsu belt, an MOT check over and test which it passed with flying colours and tracking which cost £236 ( £135 of which was the cambelt change which seems very reasonable to me ).
Ive also had to spend out £125 on the brakes as after driving through a rather deep puddle, I endured 3 months of sticking brakes, first the NSF, then OSF and then the handbrake linkage.
After all this was done I still wasnt happy so in it went again and a comprehensive clean and lubrication job was done by my local dealer - this has totally solved it now and it feels like it used to. this was FOC as they didnt spot it when they checked brakes and only did the handbrake.
I was going to replace the air fliter but at £31 I thought it could wait as the old one isnt in bad nick! Cheap it is not!
Parts ive needed due to my own fault are limited to a sunvisor which was £39 inc VAT.

I think the rear shocks are perhaps coming to the end of their working life Im sure due in part to my carrying alot of stuff in the back but we shall see at MOT time, if it passes, it will go another year.

Reliability issues. Only thing that has stopped working is the central locking on the passenger side door but since the C/L only works on the two doors anyway ( boot is by key or internal release ) and I can easily reach across from inside such is the width of the car, I havent made any attempt to get it fixed as its very minor issue.
It has never failed to start, no warming lights have shown themselves and it runs as sweetly as ever, infact I think the regular and decent miles have loosened it up somewhat.

Overall, it is still to my mind one of the best city cars of its time as it doesnt sacrifice space to get small size and economy unlike many of the city cars we looked at before buying our Sirion.
Its far less of a compromise than I ever expected it would be and that is why after this much time, I still have no desire to change it as I honestly dont think I could better it.
I was driving it today and its eager, point and squirt style still brings a big grin, safe in the knowledge that its still sipping fuel at a misery rate. I look forward to changing the factory tyres as I read other owners have made decent gains in front end grip by choosing a different make.

Still 5 stars from me. Read more

They still sell them under the Perodua badge, but not in the UK.

Perodua UK still sell the highly under-rated myvi (latest daihatsu sirion/suburu justy) but im not sure what their sales figures are like....

I've just bought the missus a 2001 Saxo Forte but its in a bit of a mess. The two N/S doors both have dents in them. (its a 5 door)

I've found a guy who is breaking a 1996 Saxo in what appears to be the same colour so my questions are as follows...

Will the doors on a 96 model be the same as a 2001 (Y) model?
I've heared that there was only ever one metalic blue colour used on Saxo's - both appear to be metalic blue what are the chances of it being the same blue?

and also how easy are they to swap? someone mentioned a need for some welding?

thanks for reading and appologies if i have posted in the wrong place Read more

Chris M

I don't have any firm answers but:

Whilst there may only be one metalic blue, manufacturers like to tweak shades from time to time, so you may not get an exact match.

I imagine you will need to remove the hinge pins - this may or may not require a special tool.

The best place to post your question is probably on one of the dedicated Saxo sites.
