Rattle

One does not make a habbit of swearing, but I just made a post which was entirely blanked out because I used a word which is not even a swear word as far I know. Surely it would work better if the swear filter just replaced the word? So if for example bagger was a swear old it would replace it with [filtered out] or something.

Sorry for making the post here, I've seen this a few times today and it must be making work for moderators trying to explain what has happened. I am not having a go at the moderators or websites, I just wonder it implentation of it was a bit short sited.

So no swearing you cheap lousy *******s.

I shall now take some lessons so I can refrain from swearing . Read more

Mild expletives will leave the first letter and put ****'s for the remainder of the word, but heavy duty expletives will trash the whole sentence and replace with just ".*********" (this is not an invite or challenge to test the swearfilter, btw).

Depending on our mood at the time, mild expletives will either get edited out and replaced with "pink fluffy dice" or the whole post will get deleted. The instant auto deletion of heavy duty expletives saves us the bother of any editing.

See www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=33415 for further clarification.

Yes if there it lateral movement then it will be transmitted though the system. Did you check the clutch as well or do you not have a spragg clutch in the alternator drive. Regards Peter

When the engine is warm and I stop my 1999 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec I have encountered the following issue. The engine usually ticks over at around 800rpm however occasionally the revs jump to 1000rpm for a couple of seconds and then drops back to 800rpm for a few seconds over and over again. Can last 4 or 5 minutes with more or less identical intervals. Eventually it settles down and goes back to normal however it's happening more and more frequently.

Anybody got any idea what could be causing this, a colleague has suggested that it could be a breather hose of some sort but I thought somebody out there might have had a similar problem.

Can anybody tell me how easy (or how difficult) it would be to replace the rear bumper on my partners Mark I Renault Clio? Some kind soul crashed into the back of her and cracked it then drove off, no structural damage fortunately just the bumper itself. I've been offered a second hand bumper for next to nothing so I was wondering if it is a possible DIY effort or is it too much trouble even attempting this myself.

I've recently found out that my department at work is being bought out by another firm, and although we are meant to be protected under the TUPE agreement there are some changes coming or way.

I have a company car at the moment and the new firm are going to make use vans. Can anyone tell me how the taxation costs compare with a company car, I will have private use and free fuel, as I do at present.

How is the BIK worked out, is it based on emissions/purchase cost as with the cars or something else. I ask as if I have to have a van I might as well have a decent sized Transit style thing, rather than a rather poxy Vauxhall Combo type thing that some of the engineers have. Would I pay much more in tax having a large van over a small one?

Honda Buyer

Hi all,

I've recently bought a new car worth about £21k on Hire purchase over 5 years, with no baloon at the end.

I'd like to obtain GAP insurance on the car, but am a bit confused about which the best option would be for me.

Which of the following would be best in terms of cover?

Finance GAP insurance
Back to invoice GAP insurance
Replacement car GAP insurance.

Also, what value of cover would people suggest i take out? £5k? £10k?

Thanks for any help offered!

Hi All,

I have a Citroen ZX 1.9TD - and it has developed a couple of problems in the last couple of days.

1. The first one is a drumming or knocking noise coming from the front of the car. It sounds like it is coming from the middle of the car, but other times it sounds like it is coming from the nearside front. The noise sounds like a drumming / rubbing noise and can be heard all the time the wheels are in motion. It becomes louder on slowing down, and becomes much louder if you coast with the clutch down. As you are coming to a stop - the noise sounds like it could be rotational - with the speed of the wheel. Would I be right in suspecting that it could be a wheel bearing that might have gone?

2. The other thing that has started occurring is a vibration under braking. The front discs and pads have recently been changed (correctly), and the calipers checked for seizing. Earlier this week when you have to brake sharply (rather than just gradually slowing down) a vibration is felt through the suspension of the car. I can't feel it either through the brake pedal (suggesting rear brakes), nor through the steering wheel - suggesting a front brake problem. When you have to slow down gradually this vibration does not appear. I have a feeling that this is probably not a brake problem as both front calipers, discs, pads and the rear shoes have been changed recently. Am I right in suspecting that it could be a problem with a suspension part / wheel bearing or something else that might have caused this vibration to appear?

3. A quietish metallic whiney noise has started to appear from the right hand side of the engine this is proportional to engine speed and seems to come on when the seems to kick in. I haven't had time to properly investigate this one fully yet - but does it sound like a problem starting to appear with the turbo? There is no excess smoke from the exhuast and the power of the car does not appear to be affected.

Many thanks for your help.

{had you not repeated the make/model, etc in the subject header (which the drop down menu selection takes care of) then there would have been room for you to mention the problem - now amended} Read more

Unless you plan to do the job yourself, make an appt with a good indy, tell him your suspicions, and he'll put it on the ramp/check it for nothing, so long as you then book it in for the work he advises.
