Hello,
I'm searching for any suggestions on what might be going on with my old 406 (1996, diesel) without having to go to a peugeot dealer.
I have an intermittent fault that is rapidly becoming less intermittent and pretty dangerous - orange engine management warning light comes on with a big "stop" sign. The dangerous part is the accompanying loss of power, steering, brakes, the lot, when I'm slowing down and the clutch is in.
It doesn't matter if the car's warm or cold. Today, whilst driving round auto-electricians and mechanics for advice (none have any idea what's up), it has juddered a bit before cutting out or threatening to, in second or third gear. Applying the gas a bit can save it from loosing power sometimes.
An auto electrician who endeavoured to look at possible error reports, informed me that the car was made before they started putting what I think of as a hard drive in 406s (forgive me for not knowing the right term). So, his software couldn't help.
I know the glow plugs need replacing. Could this be anything to do with it? The last job done on it was to do with the imobiliser key pad a few hundred miles ago. ?
Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.
Thanks,
Christine Read more
Have recently bought this car, no problems up till now.
When driving home on motorway the glowplug light came on a few times briefly, today it comes on all the time.
According to the manual it indicates an electrical fault?
Anyone any ideas please? Can i keep using it safely?
Also just changed the cambelt/tensioners, have read it is important to change the waterpump also due to causing belt failure, is this a common fatal occurance? as i have not heard this before.
Any help/advice is welcome, many thanks. Read more
Failed speedo and rev counter.
After starting vehicle on very cold morning, engine turned over for some time before starting, noted that the rev counter was not working and on moving off the speedo was also not working, but trip meter does work., all other instruments work OK. Both instrument needles are behind the stop as if they have gone completly round the clock. I see in hand book that some instumentation is controlled by a re settable fuse, refer to dealer. I don't do dealers, can anyone advise where the resettable fuse is and what action I need to take.

Also advice on tyre pressure in these cold conditions.
Discussion in t'pub turned to the above last night. A mix of performance, longevity and reliability.
I have rose tinted memories of my Mk1 Golf GTi (AUM 880X) with the 1.6 engine and 105bhp (I think). Driven very briskly when the opportunity arose and continued to run faultlessly up to 140k miles after I sold it. This was followed by an Audi 80 Sport (B626***) with the 1.8 engine. Bought 3rd hand by myself and ran faultlessly until I sold it with 145k miles when it was succumbing to rust problems.A friend of mine bought a Mk2 Golf GTI 8V (H reg) at a year old and only sold it 3 years ago with 180k miles because he fancied a change!! It still ran as sweetly as the day he bought it and never let him down, unlike his A3 replacement, and to add insult to injury he sold it too cheaply to the first enquirer and his phone did not stop ringing for 6 days with putchase enquiries. Presumably these were all derivatives of the same original engine.
More up to date, a friend had, until recently, a BMW 330i which gave a wonderful blend of performance and mpg (30 overall with a light right foot)...whether this engine will prove as reliable in the long term remains to be seen. Read more

Hi, I recently replaced my driver door c/l unit, its not too difficult. I got mine form a junk yard for £30.
hi
have read as many other posts as i can find, all with similar symptoms to myself.
recently car has been quick to heat up, temp gauge goes from zero to midway first thing on a cold morning, doing about 30-40 for a mile and a half.
gauge stays at midpoint whatever the driving conditions, some of my journey is 60 (ish !) on A roads for 20 minutes, some is crawling through town.
heater hasnt been a problem, usual amount of heat, neither warm or excessively hot. changing temp or fan settings has no influence on the temp gauge.
fluids had been topped up and as normal until this started.
way home sat, 6 miles into journey and temp needle suddenly goes to max and yellow warning light came on., pulled over, switched off, and back on, temp was in middle, light was off.
inspected under bonnet no leaks or obvious, contunied journey as normal. normal journey today. to work. inspected fluid levels and reservoir was empty. topped up, and left engine running 15 minutes on drive.
temp gauge is showing middle, but no heat in any of the pipes to or from the radiator..
as with other threads.. am i likely to be experiencing a thermostat stuck shut?? or anything more serious like the water pump?
cheers Read more
Head gasket?- where has the coolant gone otherwise? (Airlock after refilling ) Thermostats do not empty coolant reservoirs.
Expect the worse, than anything else is better.
For a while now I had noticed the fan (for the front window) was intermittently cutting out. Now it has completely stopped working.
Before that though, I noticed that the fan was blowing out cold air whatever temperature I had it set at on the heater controls.
I've changed the fuse for the fan, that made no difference to that.
For the heater though, I can say that the heat is getting to the bulkhead and that's about it. No leaks or anything from under the bonnet.
I'm driving around with the drivers side window open, trying not to breath too much so I don't mist the window up!
Any help would be appreciated. Read more
Anybody actually got any ideas on this one? Seems to be a lot of viewing and no replying!
Just had a phone call from Pugeout saying my Fault that occured regarding my flashing light is the ECU. Reckon the Month old battery has caused it to spike and knackered the initial process that tells fuel system to engage.
Any Ideas? Is this garbage or sound about right. There charging me 3 1/2 hrs labour at 92 to tell me this.

Hi,
Just wanted to resolve this issue. Took the car to the main dealer again they said one of the injectors was causing the ecu to fault. Had the injector changed solved that problem. But now the car gone back to smoking heavyly.
Cheers for the interest

We have an old Legacy estate which we use for transporting dogs, tip runs and the occassional days like today (snowy).
I noticed today how sloppy the steering feels - can't say how long its been like this but there feels to be a good deal of disconnect between the steering wheel and road wheels.
Is this likely to be easily rectified or could it be the beginning of the end for the old girl - I know it doesn't count for much but she sailed through the MOT last October.
