My BMW328 has been suffering from erratic engine idle & then stall as well as power surge. Unfortunately it is an intermittent problem. It has been in to the dealer & they have replaced the throttle sensor, air mass sensor & cyclone valve and engine vent pipe. The problem is still there. It will be going back to the garage again this week. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this. Read more

Idle control valve?

Has anyone got any experience of replacing the standard "beesting" aerial on Skoda (or any car for that matter) with a better performing specimen - FM is a bit crackly and annoying. Read more

I was going to reply to an earlier posting, (with a flippant remark), but thought better of it since it would have appeared out of sequence and you would have deleted my original thought!

But try this anyway.

Hi

My 2002 Ford Focus 1.6, 75,000 miles, manual gearbox, is making a noise when the engine is laboured under acceleration. The noise is quite loud, and a sort of grinding metallic clatter. There is no loss of performance when this happens, and no change to the engine noise.

It occurs when accelerating in any gear, at any speed, but does not occur when the engine is revved in neutral.

Finally, it only happens when the car is warmed up. It starts about 20 minutes into a journey, a long time after the engine has warmed up.

I have noticed some clutch slip recently, but only 1 or 2 isolated incidents when driving aggressively, so not sure if this is related.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I think you really need to take to garage it sounds awfully like the big ends are going or a camshaft bearing problem but without actually hearing it it is almost impossible to tell.

so there we have it, over 10 years no accidents broken by an idiot in a white van driving into me, insurance company says NCB will drop 2 years if he doesnt admit it, why 2 years?, will be driving around in a group one car if im lucky enough to get a courtesy car, and this idiot will get off with no points (waste of time ringing the police these days), but of course if I drive through a speed camera a few mph over the limit i will get hammered, my car crumpled a little too well - where can i get a family car with NO crumple zone?, and hardly a scratch on his van

how did it come to this

why arent we systematically getting idiots like this off the road?

mad mad mad

why arnt i allowed to shoot the idiot?

Folks,
The left hand front road lamp is dimmer than it should be.
The right hand front road lamp works just fine.
All other lamps on the car are working just fine.

So I went down to Halfords and got another : the bulb replaced is a GE H4 12V 55/60W 50440U E1 2D7 HUNGARY C.

It was easy to fit but it did not fix the problem : I noticed as I took the bulb out that a lot of heat had built up around one of the contacts and that this had caused the plastic casing for the clip on contact joiner around that contact to be fried.

Looking from the back of the lamp the fried contact is on the bottom left as follows :

Anyone any ideas ?

( I fitted a towbar kit recently but their is no electrics connected to the towing electrics at the back of the car so it seems to me unlikely this has casued a short ).

From Jim's graphical description of the connector it would appear to be the Headlamp.

Not a car question but close enough I hope!

This is a 4 stroke V twin engine fed through 2x36 mil Keihin CV carbs.

I recently replaced the end can of the exhaust (Think 'back box') and want to know how to tell if it's running lean.

I will be checking the spark plug colour and also doing some high rpm shut downs to check the spark plug colour at various points in the rev range.

But for now, are there signs if an engine is running dangerously lean? (Besides dropping a valve or two?!)

Temperature seems to have stayed the same even at motorway speeds.
I think there has been the odd backfire on the overrun.
Tickover rpm has not changed. Read more

I want to buy a new Fiat Panda. I emailed Fiatsupasaver for some info - no reply. A little while after I phoned them - they didn't answer the phone and I didn't leave a message. On Friday I phoned again - yes you guessed it they didn't answer but this time I left a message explaining what I wanted and asked them to contact me. They didn't on Friday. They didn't on Saturday. They have now lost a sale. Honest John used to recommend this company. Anybody had any dealings with the online company Drive the deal?

You could try Perrys. They offer quite large discounts on Fiats.
e.g. Panda 1.3 multijet Dynamic 5dr for £5994.
They are a franchised dealership.

I bought a new Doblo from the Aylesbury branch for about £2000 less than my local (Swansea) dealer was prepared to sell me one for.

I've noticed on a couple of other motoring forums (fora?) that the '07 CR-V (UK version)has a known problem in that a lot of them seem to pull to the left. I live in Norway where this is not a problem as we drive on the right and the steering is pretty neutral. However, I have noticed this pulling on trips to the UK - as I have with my previous two cars, a Xantia and a C5. Apparently all sorts of reasons and solutions have been suggested, but none seem to work, according to these forums. My question is can it be some sort of bias that is built in to the suspension to make life easier for the majority of owners on a global basis? Surely that can't be necessary in these days of active ride etc. or is it?
And by the way, my CR-V suits our snowy/slushy/hilly winters down to the ground. I won't hear a softroader taunt against them, miles better than all my previous vehicles (not all Citroens) and half the price of a Freelander for the same comfort level - we've got one of each in the family.
Still suffer summer tyre noise though, softer, winter tyres quite a bit better.

When it's nothing to do with curbing or suspension wear - I've always found it to do with tyre wear - either swop them round or replace with new and problem is fixed - a BMW 7 I once owned (@15000 miles) went back to the dealer and Bracknel who couln't fix it - but the tyres change did.

Hi all

I would like to buy an FM transmitter that can read mp3 files from a USB flash-drive, so that I can listen to podcasts etc through my car audio system. Several makes exist, but I have not found any glowing reviews for any of them. If anyone reading this has such a device and is happy with it, I would be interested to know the make and model...

thanks in advance
