I'm thinking about getting an old series Landrover, pre 1973. If I do, I'll be getting one in good-ish condition that has had a recent replacement chassis. I'd like a galvanised one but I have seen a few advertised with powder coated chassis. How is powder coating carried out and does it get into all the nooks and crannies like galvanising does? I thought it was some sort of spraying process, if so, I doubt it'll be as good. Does anyone know? Read more

Apparently Glasgow City Council's removal lorries can only lift "normal" cars and this businessman, so far, has got round the ruling albeit he is paying parking tickets.
Wonder why they don't introduce clamping for such vehicles? OK the fine won't put him off but the inconvenience might!
[Incidentally, I mentioned this reg in an Unusual Sightings post a while back, I had seen it on a Ferrari, then a McLaren and now the Phantom]

Hi i am having problems with the clutch and gears on my car (its a 1998 60sx)
first when its out of gear theres a noise its not loud, its like a growling/grinding,
it started first when i depressed the clutch about half way and would go if i released it, now its making the noise when the clutch isnt depressed and gos when i depress it, it only starts when the engine is warm especaly if ive been sat in heavy traffic,
2nd problem its imposable to get it in to first gear when the car is still moving,
if its stopped theres no problem, but its like theres something blocking it,
it can be hard sometimes to get it in to second as well, but it will go in whilst moving
all the other gears are fine and theres no problems with them,
every other aspect of the car is fine, except these two problems,
if i do need a new clutch or gear box does anyone know how much i am looking at.
thanks
jane

The clutch pedal over all feels stiff, thats the best way i can describe it,
sometimes its an effort to keep the pedal down, if i am crawling in traffic.
think i might take it for a trip down to the local garage in the new year,
get them to check it out
luckily they are quite good, and don't rip people off.
MY 99 T Toledo TDi makes a loud engine speed clicking noise whenever the climate control is on. system has been re gassed, belt and tensioner replaced, alternator replaced to no effect. specialist air con man says probably the compressor but not certain. it works normally, just very noisy. any suggestions please. I'd go for the compressor clutch too. It's not unusual to find the whole assembly lying on the undertray when the rivets fail on the Zexel pumps. About £95 from VW - change it before it flies off and takes the rad out too.
1991 Golf 1.8 Driver auto starts to die when slowed down on the brakes at a tight bend or setting-off at the top of a hill when cold. Can retrieve by flooring accelerator in neutral with black smoke in exhaust. Fine thereafter. Any clues folks? Read more
Its a Mark two and is a carb version of the 1.8 engine
hi there
i'm just wondering what you guys think of this.
I was invovled in an accident this is what happened,
i was coming to a T junction wishing to turn right onto a busy main road.
I checked both the right and left. As i looked to my right i see a Bus coming about
100 meters away. So i edged foward to the white dotted line, thus blocking
all traffic coming from my right but he was a fair distance away and can see i have pulled out.
The car on the left slowed down so i was ready to go (turning right) and join that traffic.
The next thing i know is the bus and i have made contact and my car was written off.
the bus did not hit the side of my car as i did not pull out infront of him, instead the front of my car.
He had not stopped and carried on by moving to the wrong side of the road as he wished to carry on and not let me get
through.
i hope that makes sense
who was in the wrong there, i'm a bit unsure?
cheers.

Yes, of course we do. All the time we make little assumptions about what other people are going to do, but just occasionally circumstances or the really odd behaviour of others causes collisions or worse. In this particular case the reasonableness of the OP's anticipation seems to hang on the speed limit - 30 or 60?
When you build up speed on a motorway slip road, you assume that the car doing 70 you are just going to filter in behind of, will keep going at 70. Not, as once happened to a friend, suddenly do an emergency stop for some reason.
Hi all, becasue of the cold weather i thought id give the battery of our fiat punto 60 (1998) a bit of a charge up today, as the car lives outside and only does short runs. It has been labouring to start recently and we probably need to invest in a new battery. Anyway i thought a nice task would be to remove it to the kitchen, give the case and terminals a clean up and put it on charge for a couple of hours. On re-installing the battery to the car the engine cranked over nicely but absolutly nothing from the engine-not even a try to fire up. I've got a sinking feeling here that the ECU has lost everything, ive heard of this battery thing that fits into the cig lighter, but thought a 10 year old car would be tolerant of a battery disconection-my 11 year old Hyundai Sonata gave no problems at all when i fitted a new battery last year.
This battery removal and cleanup of the rusty tray etc is a little job ive enjoyed doing for years on different cars.
does anyone have any advice to offer?
Many thanks Read more
Screwloose - wonderous! I pulled and tugged at the red wires at the positive terminal ( the ones with a black convoluted covering) because I was beginning to think it didn't matter anymore, and one last try and it burst into life! Thank you so much - I think I'll join the leave well alone brigade now! thank you so much!
Just got a 2nd hand Corolla for a good price, alas it was as the result of an older person passing away, so all the papers can not be found. The Driver Manual (Handbook ) is missing. Anyone know where I can get one?
Usually I am pretty good with figuring all the toys (Radio, NAV, computer out, but cant see how to change the dam clock etc!
I will be blowed if I am paying Toyota for a new one, a scrapyad may have one.
same goes for a spare key £125 at the dealer, any other options?

I'm currently doing around 1000 miles a week, about two-thirds of it on a motorway and although I shouldn't really be I am staggered at the poor driving I see, i.e. people pulling out without looking, not noticing the line of stationary traffic until they are almost on top of it then skidding to a halt etc etc.
My theory is that a good deal of the problem is that drivers today are not focused on their driving and have too many distractions.
My niggle is sat navs!
People drive along with these things suckered to their screen, often in such a way that must obscure their view (especially in small cars with small windscreens) plus the fact that often when I am sat in stationary traffic I see that the screens seem to change as if in a 'screen saver' mode. (I dont have one, I use maps!) Surely this cant be good for concentration?!!
Any other theories about the worst driver distractions?

Good one screwloose. :-)
Just saw on the news that a huge lot of peoples driving details have been lost over in the states, also in Ireland not long ago too. Is it me, or does this sound a bit fishy, I mean c'mon, the governments have got to be up to something haven't they. All the info that was lost contains names, addresses, e-mail addresses e.t.c. This doesn't affect us of course, but I'm sure it won't be long until something happens that will cause us some problems. Read more
And I still don't understand why the data needs to be moved from site to site.
Surely it's just an old fashioned, cumbersome, and inaccurate way of looking at information.
And presumably won't reach every nook and cranny on the inside? I'm convinced. Galvanised for sure.
