Happy Blue!

I live on a main road, at a T junction facing the mouth of the 'downstroke'. I usually enter my drive by coming up the 'downstroke' and crossing both lanes of the main road to enter my drive. Its relatively painless, as traffic usually slows down to let me cross.

Yesterday, there appears to be a rally of Vespa style scooters. Lovely and my boys were enchanted by the noise and smell. However, there was no break in the line of scooters and over 300 must have driven past before I could cross; meaning that there was a huge queue behind me. Unlike car drivers, many of whom are sufficiently bright to slow down and flash me across, none of the bikers cared less and some gave me dirty looks when I tried to edge over the nearside carriageway and make them understand I wanted to cross the far carriageway and was not trying to muscle in on their enjoyment.

Surely this type of event should be policed (in the loosest sense) and there should be rules so that they do not cause an obstruction - as they certainly did. Read more

Espada, I hope you never get stopped at a Canadian railway crossing. A three engined, one hundred waggon grain train moving off from sidings takes about 40 minutes to clear, and they dont give way!

I have a 1995 Honda Accord. I have changed a timing belt on one before but I cannot remember if the crankshaft pulley bolt is left or right hand threaded. The workshop manual gives no indictation of this either. Please can some one help me as I don-not wish to tighten it further as I know they can be a pian to get un-done as it is.

Many thnaks, Phil Read more

It is a normal right hand thread but they are usually velly velly tight on the Honda engines.

I've had to get mobile commercial tyre fitters in several times to crack these off with their monster impact guns.

I think the Japs must have really long spanners to get bolts as tight as they do!

Do the hazard lights work? It's likely that the indicators are a function of the BSI [Built-in Systems Interface - a sort of hideously fragile body-control module] on that year. There are fuses on it that need checking.

Get someone with a good scanner to plug in and check the functionality of the BSI and whether it's reading the column module's request.. It could be a programming error, or a badly-managed battery change that corrupted the software.

A BSI replacement will usually need to be done at the dealer as it contains a security code.

Hi Guys

Whilst driving to work to today i noticed that the engine was making strange noises. I.e normal when driving but when i slow down the engine sound gets louder.

After a while i noticed that when the car is at a stop in neutral the engine remains idle at 1500 revs? I assume that this isnt normal as i havent noticed it before.

Does anyone have any idea what may have / or is causing it? i am going to take into a garage but would appreciate any thoughts.

Many thanks

I can't helping thinking that there are too many accidents nowadays.

Every morning I hear news for accidents on M1/M40/M4 etc. (my local news states on these motorways anyway)

Even on weekends there are crawling traffic on motorways.

Things weren't that bad a year earlier.

The roads are getting more and more congested. Problems that never used to cause much of a hold-up now do, because there's so much traffic trying to use the road.

One lane out on a quiet motorway - no problem. One lane out now on most UK motorways most of the time - chaos.

It's easy to blame the cause of the delay as the problem. The real problem is too much traffic. And it's rising at 3% a year.

"There is no change in policy. We have been extremely clear that we are focusing on local solutions to local congestion problems."

Isn't this effectively saying that there is no integrated solution, if local councils/cities introduce congestion charging most drivers will do a quick cost benefit analysis based on time/cost.
This may make for less congestion but has the potential to create more CO2 emissions as folk decide to drive longer but pay less overall.

This already happens in London as folk avoid the congestion zone, we'd all drive another 4 or 5 miles to avoid paying £10 unless time was critical.

I've got a Focus (weezle) 1999. I've changed the belt on it a couple of times, thinking that it's a worn belt thats making the noise. It goes away for a couple of weeks then it returns. I think it maybe coming from the steering pump but I ain't sure. She has done about 107000 miles. What do you reckon?!! Read more

Watcha you lot,

Any idea roughly how much a drive belt tensioner is for my Wessle Focus. What a squeaky noise that makes!!!! Hopefully that will sort the orrible noise out!!

Thanks

Car

At somepoint may need to purchase another car as swmbo has now passed test.

Driveway down to garage pas gates has a max width of 206cm / 81 inches / 6.75 ft, which widens out to 220 cm / 86cm / 7.17ft

What would be the max width of car that would fit down the driveway without damaging the car and allow the drivers door to be opened enough for the driver to get out? if not parking car in garage.

Current car is 170.5 cm in width Read more

Car

Appologies for not getting my facts right, driveway leads down passed the house where it is 2200 mm in width past gate posts it is 2060 in width, current car incl wing mirrors is 1890 but garage driveway leads down to garage which is 3352 in mm, so no need to get out of car when going pass house, unless it breaks down.

Sorry for the confussion

Yesterday morning I followed an ambulance transferring my son between hospitals. Having fallen down stairs he had a suspected broken neck (shown on an Xray) - trussed like a chicken and vacuum packed in a special mattress. The ambulance was travelling up to 40-45 mph on the dual carriageway (50 mph limit) and 25 mph max on other roads. The driving was brilliant, moving over in plenty of time to allow others onto the road at junction without him braking, he was careful not to impede anyone in the outside lane.
What shocked us was the way some other drivers behaved - yes, the mercedes driver who undertook and then braked suddenly in front of him was the one I particularly would like to meet - and the motorcyclist who cut across him at traffic lights.
They do not use the lights/siren for this sort of transfer as they are not in a rush.
For us the outcome was good, son has chipped bone off the back bit of two neck vertebrae and subdued, is home.
I will now give even more consideration to ALL ambulances I see, not just those with lights and sirens. IF it was a broken neck and the ambulance had to slam the brakes on, I hate to think of the consequences.

Do people do that? I've never seen it myself.

I see it a lot. I think a proportion of motorists go into a kind of panic when they spot a police car or ambulance.

Thanks to you all. I think it was a temporary blip that seems to have sorted itself. The second computer was installed by a paid and experienced professional geek, so all the equipment should be up to speed.
